A shared UI library does not have to distribute one fixed component for every product to consume. Teams can instead share design decisions, component contracts and interaction logic, then generate or adapt implementations for each product’s theme or platform. This article uses regeneratable for that approach; it is a useful framing, not an established industry standard. It is not proven to outperform package-based reuse in every team or to deliver a particular amount of savings.

What changes between reusable and regeneratable?

With a conventional reusable library, a team imports a component that has already been implemented and adapts it through supported props, themes or extension points. The library centralizes implementation, which can improve consistency, but consumers may find that a shared component’s assumptions do not fit a particular product or platform.

In a regeneratable approach, teams share the decisions that define a component—such as its tokens, contract and behavior—and produce or synchronize an implementation for a target product. The output may be generated code, themed styles or a platform-specific renderer. The point is not to regenerate everything continually; it is to keep product-specific implementations tied to shared sources of truth.

These approaches are not mutually exclusive. A library can publish reusable components for some consumers while also supplying the inputs or tooling to generate other implementations. The right balance depends on how much products differ and who can maintain the generation workflow.

What should a shared system contain?

Design tokens and component contracts

Tokens encode reusable design decisions—such as color, spacing or typography—as inputs to components and styles. The U.S. Web Design System describes tokens as building blocks of component design (USWDS). A component contract should make the rest of the inputs explicit: supported properties, states, events, accessibility expectations and the behaviors consumers must not override.

Figma’s SDS repository connects design assets with a React codebase and documents token-related code syntax. It illustrates how design and implementation artifacts can be linked; it does not establish a universal format for generating components.

Shared state and behavior

Interaction logic can be shared without requiring every product to render the same component. React Spectrum’s architecture describes sharing common behavior and core logic across systems and platforms, while its architecture discussion emphasizes that accessibility, internationalization and input support take significant work. It notes: “While each design system is unique, there is often more in common between components than different.” That is the case for sharing behavior, not a promise that one renderer will suit every product. (React Spectrum architecture)

Adobe’s 2019 v3 architecture RFC makes a related separation between platform-agnostic state management, theme-agnostic behavior and themed components. Treat it as an architectural example rather than a current API guide. (Adobe architecture RFC)

Theme- and platform-specific renderers

A product-specific renderer turns shared contracts and behavior into the interface a particular product needs. Theme differences may be expressed through tokens; platform differences can require distinct markup, input handling or accessibility treatment. Sharing the contract and logic can reduce duplication, but teams still need to implement and test each target rather than assume that generation erases those differences.

Generated or synchronized artifacts

Generation can connect design decisions to code, but the existence of a generator does not guarantee suitable output for every application. AWS Amplify UI documents a bounded workflow in which Amplify Studio can use Figma-designed components, bind them to data and generate React code. This is an AWS capability claim, not independent evidence that generated output is always production-ready. Consult the Amplify UI documentation for its workflow and current product details.

How the approaches compare

The trade-offs below are architectural considerations, not results from a head-to-head benchmark. Actual outcomes depend on component scope, target platforms, tooling and team ownership.

Consideration Reusable package Regeneratable approach
Consistency Centralized implementation can make consumers behave consistently within the package’s supported options. Consistency depends on shared source decisions and on whether every generated output stays aligned with them.
Consumer flexibility Consumers are constrained by the package’s extension points and design assumptions. Outputs can be adapted to product needs, but the adaptation and its boundaries must be governed.
Cross-platform reach A package may target one framework or platform; separate implementations may be needed elsewhere. Shared contracts or behavior may support multiple renderers, but each target still needs implementation and validation.
Accessibility and interaction burden The package can centralize accessible interaction behavior, provided it covers the consumer’s needs. Generation does not remove the need to verify accessibility, internationalization, keyboard, pointer and touch behavior for each output.
Upgrade and review workflow Consumers upgrade the dependency and review changes according to their package workflow. Teams need to trace and review generated changes, as well as manage regeneration when shared inputs change.
Toolchain dependence Consumers depend on the package and its supported framework and versioning choices. Teams also depend on the design-to-code or generation tooling and on keeping it compatible with shared inputs.

What does a dependable regeneration workflow require?

Regeneration should be treated as a reproducible engineering process, not a one-off export. The cited tools document specific connections between design assets, tokens and code, but there is no universal regeneration standard established by these examples. For a team building its own workflow, useful requirements include:

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Traceable inputs: identify the token set, component contract and behavior definition used to produce each artifact.
  • Versioned tooling: record the generator version and relevant configuration so a team can understand why output changed.
  • Reviewable diffs: make generated changes inspectable, and distinguish them from hand-maintained code.
  • Explicit ownership: decide who updates shared inputs, who reviews generated output and how consumers request changes.
  • Target-specific validation: test accessibility and interaction behavior on each supported platform and input method.
  • A recovery path: define how to handle a failed or unwanted regeneration, including whether teams can restore the prior artifact or patch an output temporarily.

These are recommended engineering safeguards, not requirements claimed by Figma SDS, React Spectrum or Amplify UI.

How to test the idea before migrating a library

  1. Choose one narrow, frequently reused component family. Prefer a case where products share meaningful behavior but have a clear reason to differ in theme or target.
  2. Write its contract and invariants. Document supported inputs, states, events and accessibility expectations; mark which properties products may customize.
  3. Choose one target implementation. Keep the first experiment bounded so the team can inspect how shared decisions become product code.
  4. Generate and review the output. Compare the artifact with its source tokens and contract, examine the diff, and test keyboard, pointer or touch interaction as appropriate.
  5. Track the ongoing ownership cost. Note who updates inputs, handles generator changes and reviews output. Expand only if the approach remains understandable and maintainable.

This experiment can reveal whether regeneration solves a real mismatch that package reuse cannot handle cleanly. It cannot establish universal productivity gains, and no measured savings are established by the cited examples.
