Static assertions catch build-time assumptions before embedded software reaches a device. They can verify that a type has the width a protocol expects, an enum has the required number of entries, or a structure matches an intended layout. If a condition is false, compilation fails; if it passes, the check adds no runtime work. Use them for facts the compiler can evaluate—not for changing inputs such as sensor readings or packet data.
What a static assertion checks
A static assertion asks the compiler to evaluate a condition as a constant expression. When the condition is false, the compiler diagnoses the assertion and the build cannot succeed. When it is true, there is no runtime test or execution cost. Microsoft describes this distinction in its C static assertion documentation; the GNU C manual likewise requires a compile-time condition.
This makes static assertions useful for checking whether a particular build matches assumptions made by source code, hardware interfaces, or a wire protocol. They do not prove a whole application safe, and they cannot check values that are only known while the program runs.
Useful checks in embedded code
Check a required type width
If an interface requires a type to occupy exactly four bytes, assert that requirement rather than assuming every target gives the type the same size. For example, Microsoft documents static_assert(sizeof(int) == 4, "Expecting 32 bit integers"); as a C++ example. Treat this as a project requirement, not a universal property of int: if the chosen target does not meet it, the build should fail and the code should use a suitable type or a different implementation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A width check is meaningful only when the width itself is the requirement. It does not establish that a type has the signedness, byte order, or representation a protocol needs; check those properties separately when they can be expressed at compile time.
Check enum counts
When an enum is expected to contain a fixed set of entries—for example, one value per supported command—a compile-time count check can expose a mismatch after the enum changes. The count must be derived in a way that is valid for the language and code design; do not assume an enum automatically provides a count or that its numeric values are contiguous.

Check layout assumptions
Where code depends on a target-specific layout, use compile-time checks for the properties the compiler permits you to inspect, such as a structure’s size or a member’s offset. These checks can catch a changed ABI or build configuration before deployment. A size match alone does not prove that a structure is safe to transmit directly: padding, alignment, representation, and byte order may still matter.
Choose syntax for the language mode
C and C++ use related syntax, but their spellings and availability depend on the selected standard mode. The compiler’s actual version and build flags matter too; a language feature being standardized does not by itself establish support in every embedded toolchain.

| Language mode | Spelling and availability | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| C11 | _Static_assert(constant-expression, "message"); |
_Static_assert is the keyword. Microsoft’s documentation says static_assert is a convenience macro supplied through <assert.h>. |
| C23 | static_assert(constant-expression, "message"); |
static_assert is a keyword; the C reference documents its removal as a macro from <assert.h>. Check whether the compiler is actually using C23 mode. |
| C++11 and later | static_assert(condition, "message"); |
The declaration is available beginning in C++11. C++17 permits omitting the message: static_assert(condition);. |
The C details are documented by Microsoft’s C reference and the C static assertion reference. For C++, see the C++ static assertion reference. Do not apply C’s <assert.h> guidance indiscriminately to C++.
Place a check where its assumption is visible
In C11, the GNU C manual permits static assertions at file scope or within a type definition. Put each assertion near the declaration or interface whose assumption it protects, and use a message that identifies the failed requirement. That makes a build failure more actionable when a target or configuration changes.

For a multi-target project, build the assertion-bearing source under every supported target configuration. A check only protects configurations in which it is compiled. Confirm both the compiler version and the selected language mode in the build system, rather than inferring support from another compiler or an IDE setting.

Static assertions are for compile-time facts, such as a type’s size in the current build. They cannot verify a sensor value, a packet’s contents, a peripheral’s response, or any other condition that changes during execution. Validate those values at runtime with appropriate input checks, error handling, or runtime assertions. Microsoft distinguishes static assertions from assert and other runtime assertion functions, which test conditions during execution and may incur runtime cost.

- Use a static assertion when the condition is fixed by source code, the language mode, target ABI, or build configuration and is expressible as a constant expression.
- Use runtime validation when the condition depends on external input, device state, timing, or data received while the program runs.
- Use both when a design has a compile-time assumption and a separate runtime condition—for example, checking a fixed buffer capacity at build time while validating each incoming packet’s actual length.
Verify support in the embedded toolchain
Before adopting a spelling, check the exact embedded compiler version and language mode used by the project, then confirm the feature in that compiler’s official documentation or with a small build using the production flags. The available language references establish standard-version behavior, but they do not establish a current support matrix across embedded compiler families. Also inspect whether diagnostics identify the failed condition clearly and whether the assertion is included in every relevant target build.
