Android’s move from Dalvik to ART happened with Android 5.0 (API level 21), released in 2014. ART became the default runtime for apps, changing how Android compiles and executes code while retaining the DEX bytecode format. The transition brought performance and efficiency improvements, but official documentation does not establish a universal battery-life gain attributable to the original switch.

What happened to Dalvik on Android?

Before Android 5.0, Dalvik was Android’s runtime: the software environment that executed apps. Android 5.0 and later use the Android Runtime, or ART. On those releases, each app runs in its own process with its own ART instance, according to Android’s platform documentation.

“Dalvik is dead” is therefore best understood as a statement about Android’s default runtime, not a claim that Android stopped using the app bytecode format associated with Dalvik. ART still takes DEX bytecode as input. The change was to the runtime and its compilation and execution strategy, not a replacement of the basic app bytecode format.

How ART differs from Dalvik

Dalvik was a register-based virtual-machine runtime for DEX bytecode. ART retained DEX but introduced a different approach to compiling and running app code. Its design supports ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation and just-in-time (JIT) compilation, along with changes to garbage collection and developer diagnostics.

Comparison Dalvik ART
Default Android releases Android versions before 5.0 (API 21), according to Android Developers. Android 5.0 (API 21) and later, according to Android Developers.
App bytecode DEX bytecode. DEX bytecode; the format remained the input to the runtime.
Compilation approach JIT-based execution in the pre-ART runtime. ART’s initial transition emphasized AOT; Android 7.0 added JIT alongside AOT. Android Developers documents the later combination.
Startup and runtime performance A directly comparable universal measurement is not stated in the cited Android documentation. Android documentation describes runtime-performance improvements from the Android 7.0 JIT/AOT combination; AOSP says Android 8.0 changes can shorten startup time. Results vary by release, device, workload, and compiler profile.
Storage and memory A directly comparable universal measurement is not stated in the cited Android documentation. Android 7.0 documentation says its JIT/AOT combination can save storage; AOSP describes Android 8.0 changes that can save RAM. No single saving applies to every device.
Garbage collection and diagnostics A directly comparable universal measurement is not stated in the cited Android documentation. ART introduced optimized garbage collection and improved debugging; Android 8.0 added a concurrent compacting garbage collector, according to AOSP.
Updateability Independent ART updates do not apply to Dalvik. On supported modern devices, ART can receive Google Play system updates separately from a full OS release, as Google described in 2023.
App compatibility Apps built for Android still used DEX, but developers needed to validate behavior on the runtime present on their target devices. Developers should test on ART and avoid depending on undocumented runtime internals; Android’s compatibility guidance says the format is subject to change without notice.

How ART’s compilation changed after Android 5.0

Android 5.0: ART becomes the default

The initial switch established ART as Android’s runtime. ART’s AOT approach could compile code ahead of execution, while Dalvik used JIT compilation. ART also introduced changes to garbage collection and debugging. The transition did not require a new basic bytecode format: apps continued to provide DEX code.

Android 7.0: JIT returns alongside AOT

ART did not remain an AOT-only story. Android 7.0 added a JIT compiler to complement ART’s AOT compiler. Android Developers connects this combination to better runtime performance, reduced storage requirements, and faster app and system updates. The balance between compilation and execution is therefore part of ART’s evolution, rather than a permanent switch from one compilation mode to another.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Android 8.0: garbage collection and startup changes

Android 8.0 added a concurrent compacting garbage collector and improved locality by grouping frequently accessed parts of DEX files. AOSP says these changes can save RAM and shorten startup time. Those are release-specific improvements; they should not be read as a guaranteed result for every ART version or device.

Modern ART: updates can arrive independently

On supported devices, ART can be updated through Google Play system updates without waiting for a full Android OS release. Google’s 2023 Android Developers Blog described ART-related updates reaching hundreds of millions of devices. That figure describes the reach reported in that 2023 blog, not a guarantee of availability on every Android device today.

Is ART faster than Dalvik?

ART introduced a different compilation model, and later ART releases added documented gains in runtime performance, app startup, storage use, and update speed. The size of any benefit depends on the Android release, device hardware, app workload, and compiler profile; there is no single speed-up figure established for all apps and devices by the Android documentation cited here.

Google’s 2023 code-size optimization work estimated a saving of 50–100 MB per device, after testing optimizations with more than half a million APKs. This is a specific estimate from that optimization work, not a measurement of the original Dalvik-to-ART switch or a promise that every device saves that amount.

Did ART improve battery life?

ART’s efficiency-related improvements can affect factors such as startup time, memory use, and storage, but the available official documentation does not establish a universal battery-life percentage caused by the original Android 5.0 transition. Battery impact depends on the device and what an app does; a performance improvement should not automatically be treated as a measurable battery-life increase.

Do Android developers need to change their apps for ART?

The move did not replace DEX with a new basic app bytecode format, so the runtime transition was not itself a requirement to rewrite apps. Developers should still test app behavior on ART, particularly where code depends on runtime behavior or undocumented implementation details.

  • Test apps on the ART versions and Android releases that the app supports.
  • If an app needs to identify the virtual machine, use Android’s documented runtime property rather than relying on undocumented details.
  • Do not depend on internal file-format details: Android’s compatibility guidance warns that the format can change without notice.

These compatibility points matter because ART has continued to evolve after its introduction; an app that worked on one Android release should not be assumed to behave identically on every later runtime without testing.

Bottom line: Dalvik’s default era ended with Android 5.0

Android 5.0 made ART the default runtime and ended Dalvik’s role as the standard runtime for Android apps. ART kept DEX bytecode but changed compilation and execution, then evolved with JIT, AOT, garbage-collection, startup, and update improvements. The evidence supports a broad story of performance and efficiency improvements, not a universal battery-life percentage for the original switch.
