Apple’s M1 is related to the A14 Bionic, but it is not simply an A14 with a few extra cores. Both 2020 chips use TSMC’s 5 nm process, share Firestorm and Icestorm CPU core designs, and include a 16-core Neural Engine. M1 scales up the CPU and GPU, widens the memory interface, and integrates features for Mac systems. Those differences make it better suited to heavier Mac workloads, but the available specifications do not establish a universal M1-versus-A14 benchmark result.

How M1 and A14 compare at a glance

The figures below come from Apple’s M1 specifications and Tom’s Hardware’s analysis of the chips and their die shots. Both chips were introduced in 2020. Apple does not publish every block-level specification, so some details—such as A14 cache capacities—are not established in these sources.

Is the M1 just an A14?

No. They share important architectural foundations, but M1 is a larger SoC configured for a different class of device. Both use TSMC’s N5 process and the same named Firestorm performance-core and Icestorm efficiency-core designs. Tom’s Hardware also identifies unified memory and a 16-core neural-processing unit in both. It describes the GPU architecture as presumably shared; Apple’s cited specifications do not provide a complete block-level GPU description, so that point is not confirmed as precisely as the CPU core relationship.

The useful shorthand is that M1 belongs to the A14 design family, then scales and integrates that foundation for Macs. It is not an unrelated design, but neither is it an A14 running unchanged in a laptop.

Why does M1 have more CPU cores?

The A14 has two Firestorm performance cores alongside four Icestorm efficiency cores. M1 keeps four Icestorm cores and doubles the Firestorm count to four. That gives M1 more high-performance CPU resources for work that can use them; the core-count difference alone does not predict how quickly every application will run.

Tom’s Hardware reports M1 Firestorm clocks of up to 3.20 GHz and Icestorm clocks of about 2.0 GHz. Its table lists 12 MB of Firestorm cache and 4 MB of Icestorm cache for M1, but does not give comparable A14 cache capacities. A precise cache-size comparison between the two therefore cannot be made from those figures.

What changes in the GPU and memory system?

GPU resources

Tom’s Hardware’s comparison lists four GPU clusters for A14 and eight for M1, and characterizes M1’s GPU as about twice the size. Apple separately specifies up to eight GPU cores and 2.6 teraflops of throughput for M1. Cluster counts in the comparison and Apple’s GPU-core terminology are not interchangeable specifications; together they indicate the larger GPU provision, not a direct real-world speed ratio for every graphics task.

Memory width and unified memory

Tom’s Hardware lists A14 with a 64-bit, four-channel LPDDR4X memory interface, while M1 has a 128-bit, eight-channel LPDDR4X interface. The wider M1 interface is intended to serve its larger CPU and GPU resources. The cited specifications do not state a comparable memory-bandwidth figure for both chips, so it would be misleading to supply a numerical bandwidth comparison.

Apple describes M1’s unified memory as a high-bandwidth, low-latency pool accessible to SoC components, avoiding copies between separate memory pools. Unified memory is part of the architecture shared with A14, while M1’s wider interface and Mac-scale design change how much resource the system can serve.

What do die size and transistor counts tell you?

Tom’s Hardware gives A14 11.8 billion transistors on an approximately 88 mm² die, and M1 16 billion transistors on an approximately 120.5 mm² die. It describes M1’s die as about 37% larger. The additional area accommodates the larger CPU and GPU resources as well as Mac-oriented integration; transistor count and die area by themselves do not establish application performance or efficiency.

What makes M1 a Mac-focused SoC?

Apple’s M1 specification includes more than CPU and GPU blocks: it lists an image-signal processor, Secure Enclave, encrypted-storage controller, media encode and decode engines, and a Thunderbolt controller with USB 4 support up to 40 Gbps. These are part of M1’s role as a complete Mac platform SoC rather than evidence that the A14 lacks every equivalent function; the cited A14 material does not provide a full component-by-component inventory.

The platform difference also shapes how the chips are used. A14 serves phone and tablet designs, which must account for their compact form factors and power constraints. M1 was designed for Mac systems, where additional CPU and GPU resources, memory access, media processing and connectivity support notebook and compact-desktop workloads. No comparable chip-only power-envelope figures are established here, and sustained performance also depends on the device’s cooling and power design.

Which chip is faster, and is an M1 Mac better for heavy work?

For workloads that benefit from its four performance cores, larger GPU provision and wider memory interface, M1 has the stronger hardware configuration. That makes an M1 Mac a more suitable fit than an A14 phone or tablet for many demanding, sustained Mac-style tasks. It does not mean every app or task will be faster on M1: software, workload, device design and thermal behavior all matter, and these specifications are not a controlled same-system benchmark.

Apple’s launch materials claimed up to 3.5× faster CPU performance, up to 6× faster GPU performance and up to 15× faster machine learning against specified prior-generation Mac systems in Apple’s tests. Those are Apple’s contextualized launch comparisons, not measurements of M1 against A14, and should not be read as direct M1-versus-A14 speed ratios.

Apple’s M1 launch announcement named the MacBook Air among the first Macs built around the chip. For a reader choosing between device types, the relevant distinction is not just the chip label: an M1 Mac combines the larger Mac-oriented SoC configuration with a computer platform, while an A14 device remains designed around phone or tablet constraints.
