The temperature is returned in degrees Celsius and humidity as relative humidity percent.
What you need
- A microcontroller board running MicroPython, with a GPIO pin you can use for the sensor data line.
- A DHT11 sensor, either a bare sensor or a breakout module. Check the specific product’s pin labels and whether it already includes a data-line pull-up resistor.
- Connecting wires and, if your setup does not already provide one, a pull-up resistor for the data line.
Before connecting power, check the exact sensor revision’s supply requirements and confirm that its signal voltage is safe for your board’s GPIO. The AOSONG DHT11 Product Manual lists a DC supply range of 3.3–5.5 V; verify that this applies to your sensor and that the selected voltage is compatible with the microcontroller.
Wire the DHT11
MicroPython describes DHT signaling as its own protocol, different from Dallas 1-Wire. For the bare DHT11’s four-pin arrangement, the order is VDD, Data, NC (no connection), and GND. Do not assume that a breakout module uses the same physical layout: follow the labels printed on that module and its documentation.
Use a pull-up on the data line. Some breakout modules may already include one, so inspect the module documentation or board before adding another resistor.

Read the sensor in MicroPython
This example follows MicroPython’s documented API. Replace pin number 4 with a GPIO pin supported by your particular board.

The example has not been tested on a specific board. The pin number and electrical compatibility depend on your hardware.

How often should you take a measurement?
MicroPython says the DHT11 should be called no more than once per second for most accurate results. The AOSONG DHT11 Product Manual states a sampling period greater than two seconds. Because the guidance differs, waiting at least two seconds between requests is a conservative choice when following that manual. Avoid rapid polling.
What accuracy should you expect?
The AOSONG DHT11 Product Manual specifies humidity accuracy of ±5% RH at 25°C and temperature accuracy of ±2°C at 25°C. These are manufacturer specifications for the product covered by that manual, not independent measurements or a guarantee for every sensor clone or breakout module. Check the documentation for the exact unit you have.

When does a DHT22 make more sense?
MicroPython documents whole-number temperature and humidity readings for the DHT11, compared with one decimal place for each reading from the DHT22. Decimal resolution means finer displayed increments; it does not, by itself, establish better real-world accuracy.

Troubleshoot missing or unreliable readings
- Check power and ground: Confirm VDD and GND are connected to the correct pins, using the sensor or module’s own labels.
- Check the data pin: Make sure the GPIO in
machine.Pin(...)is the one connected to Data and is supported by your board. - Check the pull-up: Confirm the data line has a pull-up, while avoiding an unnecessary second resistor if the module already includes one.
- Slow down polling: Leave at least two seconds between measurement requests when using the conservative interval above.
- Verify electrical compatibility: Check the exact sensor supply specification and the voltage limits of your microcontroller’s GPIO before changing wiring or supply voltage.
