Sigma’s Foveon sensor records red, green and blue information in three vertically stacked layers at the same image location. That differs from a Bayer sensor, which samples one filtered color at each photosite and reconstructs the other colors through demosaicing. Foveon doesn’t make megapixels obsolete; it makes a megapixel count harder to compare across different sensor designs.
How a Foveon sensor captures color
In a Foveon X3 sensor, photodiode layers sit at different depths in silicon. Because silicon responds differently to wavelengths of light at different depths, the layers capture blue, green and red information at each location. Sigma describes this as capturing full-color information with a three-layer structure.

A conventional Bayer sensor instead places a color filter over each photosite so that it records one color channel there. The camera then uses demosaicing—interpolation from neighboring photosites—to estimate the other two channels. Foveon’s sampling geometry is different: it collects information for all three channels at each location, so Sigma says its design does not need color interpolation and can reduce color artifacts.

What “46 megapixels” means on a Merrill camera
Sigma’s DP3 Merrill release described its sensor as having 46 effective megapixels, calculated as 4,800 × 3,200 pixels across three layers. Sigma separately listed 44 recording megapixels. Those figures describe different things: the first counts the three layers, while the second is the camera’s stated recording-pixel figure.
Sigma’s 2013 DP3 Merrill brochure also said the sensor delivered luminance resolution equivalent to a 30MP color-filter-array (CFA) sensor on the standard black-and-white resolution chart used in conventional digital-camera testing. That is a manufacturer claim tied to a particular chart and test—not a general conversion formula for comparing Foveon megapixels with Bayer megapixels.

Merrill and Quattro use different layer arrangements
Merrill and Quattro are distinct generations, not interchangeable ways of counting the same sensor. Merrill used three layers with equal resolution. Quattro shifted the balance: its bottom, middle and top layers use a 1:1:4 ratio, with the top layer carrying most of the spatial detail and the lower layers contributing color information.

| Generation | Layer arrangement | Published resolution figures |
|---|---|---|
| Merrill | Three equal-resolution layers | The DP3 Merrill release lists 46 effective megapixels (4,800 × 3,200 × 3 layers) and 44 recording megapixels. |
| Quattro | Bottom, middle and top layers in a 1:1:4 ratio; the top layer has the highest spatial resolution | Sigma’s sd Quattro catalog lists 19.6 megapixels in the top layer and approximately 39 megapixels equivalent output for the APS-C model. |
The figures are generation-specific and come from Sigma’s product documents. They should not be treated as directly interchangeable measurements of resolved detail.

- Introducing: Sigma BF, a full-frame mirrorless camera designed for an intuitive shooting experience that brings the beauty of everyday life into focus.
- Easy to use interface: The user interface has a completely new information structure compared to conventional digital cameras, with the main shooting-related settings stored on the live view screen, secondary settings in the optional menu, and management functions and detailed settings in the system menu.
- Unibody Structure:T he BF is the first camera in history to feature a true unibody, which boasts unprecedented rigidity. Each camera is carved from a single, solid block of aluminum over the course of seven hours.
- Variety of Color Modes: Thirteen different color modes are available to open up new avenues of creativity. The modes range from unique options like Teal and Orange, Powder Blue, and Warm Gold to creative yet versatile options such as Rich, and Calm.
- Video Recording: The BF supports high-resolution 6K and L-Log recording, enabling video production that takes advantage of the wide dynamic range of a full-frame sensor.
What Foveon changes—and what it doesn’t—about image quality
Sigma’s stated benefits include full-color sampling at each location, reduced color artifacts, the ability to omit an optical low-pass filter, rich gradation and what the company describes as distinctive three-dimensional rendering. These are manufacturer-described characteristics, not a universal independent ranking against Bayer cameras.
Megapixels still matter for image dimensions and potential detail. But a single number cannot describe how a sensor samples color or how much detail its processing resolves. When comparing cameras, check the sensor generation and layer arrangement, the recording file and the method used to assess resolution. Sigma’s 30MP-equivalent luminance statement, for example, refers to a specified black-and-white chart test rather than a rule for converting every Foveon model into Bayer megapixels.

- The dp0 is the fourth camera in the new Quattro series to be released, with the dp1, dp2 currently available and the dp3 Quattro to follow
- The dp0 is stocked with a fixed and newly designed 14mm F4 wide-angle lens designed specifically and lined up perfectly with its new Foveon X3 Quattro sensor to create exceptional images
- The new Foveon X3 Quattro offers an even higher level of image purity with an increase in resolution to the previous Foveon sensor, sure to bring about new experiences in your photography
Practical trade-offs: files and processing
The multilayer approach produces high-volume image data. Sigma cameras use dedicated TRUE processors, and the RAW workflow centers on Sigma’s X3F format and Sigma Photo Pro. That specialized workflow is part of the practical difference between choosing a Foveon camera and a camera built around a conventional Bayer sensor.

Sigma’s 2020 notice said it could not yet provide a certain mass-production outlook for its full-frame Foveon project. A 2021 update described development work restarting. Those updates establish that the project was in development at the time; they do not establish a firm shipping date or a 2026 launch.
