Choose an electronics enclosure by starting with the installation hazards—not by picking the highest-looking IP number. Then evaluate the shell, every opening and accessory, heat management, and electrical-safety measures as one finished assembly. An enclosure’s IP or NEMA/UL Type marking describes particular protection tests; it does not, by itself, establish that the complete equipment is safe or retains that rating after modification.
What hazards must the enclosure handle?
Write down the conditions the equipment will actually face, including routine operation, cleaning and maintenance. An indoor cabinet in a clean room and an outdoor box exposed to rain, salt, sun and temperature swings are different design problems, even if they house the same electronics.
- Ingress: dust, water, washdown, rain, condensation, and possible icing.
- Environment: salt, chemicals, corrosion, ultraviolet exposure, and the expected temperature range.
- Mechanical stress: impact, vibration, cable loads, and the way the enclosure will be mounted or handled.
- Electrical and service conditions: access to energized parts, grounding or insulation, wiring entry, and how technicians will open and maintain the equipment.
- Heat: internal power dissipation, outside ambient temperature, and short-duration or peak loads.
Turn those hazards into measurable requirements before choosing a housing. “Outdoor” or “water resistant” is too vague: specify the exposure and the protection language required for the product’s market.
How should you choose an IP or NEMA/UL Type rating?
IEC 60529 provides the framework for the IP Code. UL 50E covers specified indoor and outdoor enclosure Types. They are related ways of describing tested enclosure protection, but their labels and test scopes are not interchangeable by assumption. Schneider Electric’s bulletin dated 12 August 2025 compares IP, NEMA 250 and UL 50 systems; use the applicable standard and compare the relevant tests rather than translating a mark into another one by shorthand.

Choose the rating language required by the market in which the finished equipment will be used. If customers, a governing product standard or a certification route calls for both IP and NEMA/UL Type designations, establish both targets and verify each against its own test basis. Do not infer performance for a hazard simply because a rating sounds comprehensive.
In particular, UL 50E states that it does not cover protection against conditions such as condensation, icing, corrosion or contamination that may occur inside an enclosure or enter through conduit or unsealed openings. A rating therefore cannot substitute for designing around those site conditions.
IP marking is not a complete safety evaluation
UL Solutions’ IEC 62368-1 guidance says that where an IP construction is used as a safeguard, it must comply with IEC 60529 and the IP code must be declared in the instruction manual or on the equipment. The guidance also says an IP or NEMA rating does not replace the specified pollution-degree test. Treat ingress protection as one part of the equipment’s safety case, not as a general-purpose safety approval.

Do openings and accessories change the rating?
Yes. The practical protection of the assembly depends on its weakest relevant opening as well as the shell. A correctly rated housing can be undermined by an unsuitable cable gland, connector, switch, viewing window, vent, fan, hinge, latch or hole plug. Draw every penetration before machining, and select the sealing and mounting details for the target environment.
Evaluate accessories as part of the chosen enclosure system. UL Solutions notes that accessory evaluation can include corrosion, UV and water exposure, gaskets, and preservation of the enclosure’s Type or IP rating. A part’s standalone description is not proof that the assembled combination retains the housing’s rating.
- Use cable-entry parts and connectors intended for the required exposure, cable diameter and installation method.
- Specify the gasket, fasteners, window, hinges and latches that will be installed, including material compatibility and sealing details.
- For a vent or fan, account for the opening, filter, drainage or weather protection, and the effect on the required rating.
- Use plugs suited to the hole and rating when an opening is not populated; do not leave unused penetrations to be solved informally in the field.
Drilling, substituting parts or making a field modification can invalidate the basis for a catalog rating. If the final build differs from the evaluated configuration, obtain an appropriate evaluation or test the completed assembly before claiming that protection level.

Should you choose a metal or plastic enclosure?
Neither material is universally safer. Select for the full hazard set and the electrical design, not for a single attribute such as corrosion resistance or shielding. Wall thickness, doors, seams, coatings, fasteners and openings all affect the result.
| Consideration | Metal | Plastic |
|---|---|---|
| Grounding and electrical isolation | Can support protective bonding and shielding when deliberately designed and bonded; conductive parts also require appropriate fault and touch-safety consideration. | Can provide electrical isolation, but does not eliminate the need to assess touch access, insulation, clearances and fault containment. |
| Corrosion and UV | Assess the selected metal, finish, joints and fasteners for the site’s corrosion exposure. | Assess the particular resin and product for chemical, UV and temperature exposure; “plastic” alone does not establish durability. |
| Impact and flame | Verify the selected construction and any applicable impact and flame requirements. | Verify the specific material and enclosure’s impact and flame performance rather than generalizing from a resin family. |
| Thermal behavior and shielding | Evaluate heat transfer, bonding and electromagnetic compatibility for the finished design. | Evaluate heat removal and any shielding needs; do not assume an insulating enclosure provides metal-like shielding. |
| Machining, service and accessories | Consider fabrication, corrosion at modified surfaces, service access and compatible accessories. | Consider machining limits, mounting strength, service access and the available rated accessory system. |
As a specific example rather than a universal rule, Eaton documents a polycarbonate enclosure family as non-conductive and impact-resistant, with UL 94 5VA and UL 746C claims, IP66, NEMA Type 4X options, and a stated operating range of -40°C to 120°C. Those specifications belong to that documented family and configuration; confirm the exact model and conditions before applying them to a design.

A sealed enclosure is not automatically a cool enclosure. Start with the heat generated inside and the hottest expected ambient conditions, then check whether component temperatures remain acceptable in the actual configuration. Siemens identifies passive conduction, forced-convection fans, venting, plenums, heat exchangers, phase-change materials and transient modeling as thermal-design options.

- Estimate internal heat: account for component losses and operating modes, including simultaneous or peak loads.
- Set the thermal boundary conditions: use the expected worst-case ambient and the actual mounting, airflow and sun-exposure conditions relevant to installation.
- Compare cooling approaches: consider passive transfer first where feasible, then assess venting, fan-assisted airflow, a heat exchanger or phase-change material against the enclosure’s ingress target and service needs.
- Check hot spots and transients: model or measure the locations and operating periods that could be warmer than the average enclosure air.
- Verify the built unit: confirm component temperatures with the intended accessories, loading and environmental assumptions.
Cooling parts introduce design trade-offs. A fan or vent creates an opening that must be reconciled with ingress protection, while a heat exchanger or passive approach may avoid a direct air path but needs to be sized for the actual heat load. No single method is appropriate for every enclosure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What electrical-safety and service details belong in the design?
Ingress protection does not settle electrical-safety questions. Apply the governing standard for the complete equipment and address energized-part access, creepage and clearance, insulation, protective bonding for conductive parts, cable strain relief, fusing and fault containment. The required details depend on the product and its standard; an enclosure mark alone does not resolve them.
Plan serviceability at the same time. Make space for safe wiring and component replacement, choose accessible latches and fasteners, and define how seals will be restored after service. If opening the enclosure requires disturbing a gasket or cable entry, specify the replacement and reassembly method so maintenance does not silently alter the protection of the equipment.

How can you make the finished enclosure verifiable?
Keep a design record that describes the actual build, not just the empty shell. Record the target rating and standard, material and thickness, gasket and fastener choices, each cable-entry and accessory part, grounding or insulation method, and thermal assumptions. Record any ingress or temperature tests performed on the completed configuration and the conditions under which they were run.
Use an evaluated configuration or arrange suitable assessment of the final assembly. A shell’s catalog rating does not automatically carry over after unapproved drilling, substituted accessories or field changes. Claim certification only when the complete product has actually been evaluated for that claim.
