Rocket Lab officially opened Launch Complex 3 (LC-3) at Wallops Island, Virginia, on August 28, 2025. The purpose-built site is intended to support testing, launch, and landing operations for Neutron, the company’s reusable medium-lift rocket. The opening is a significant infrastructure milestone—but it does not mean Neutron is flight-ready or has launched.

What is Launch Complex 3?

LC-3 is Rocket Lab’s dedicated Neutron test, launch, and landing facility at Wallops Island, Virginia. Rocket Lab describes the complex as a purpose-built site for Neutron operations, rather than simply a launchpad for an already operational rocket. Rocket Lab announced the opening on August 28, 2025.

Neutron’s supporting infrastructure includes an Assembly & Integration Complex located within 2.5 miles of LC-3, intended for final vehicle assembly, integration, launch, and test operations. Rocket Lab says the Neutron Assembly & Integration Complex is 2.5 miles from LC-3. The company’s Archimedes engine development and manufacturing are based in Long Beach, California. Rocket Lab described that engine facility in Long Beach.

Why does the launchpad matter?

A new launch complex gives Neutron a designated U.S. site for the ground operations its program requires: testing, launch, and landing. It is one piece of a broader system that also includes vehicle assembly and engine development. Completing the facility moves that infrastructure into place, but the rocket still has to complete its own development and qualification work before a first flight.

Rocket Lab presents Neutron as a way to expand U.S. medium-lift launch capacity with a reusable vehicle. At LC-3’s opening, CEO Sir Peter Beck called completion a major achievement on the path to Neutron’s first launch and said it brought the company closer to offering a cost-effective, reliable, responsive alternative. These are the company’s stated aims, not proof that Neutron has already demonstrated those capabilities in flight.

Rocket Lab reported that its Electron rocket had delivered more than 200 satellites to orbit since Electron’s first orbital launch in January 2018. That history provides context for the company’s launch business, but Electron’s record should not be mistaken for Neutron flight experience. Rocket Lab’s LC-3 announcement gives the Electron figure and Beck’s comments.

When will Rocket Lab launch Neutron?

Rocket Lab’s later SEC filing targeted Neutron’s first launch for Q4 2026. That is a schedule target, not a confirmed launch date: the filing tied the schedule to additional tank and Archimedes engine qualification work. Development milestones and qualification results can affect a first-flight schedule, so the target should be understood as subject to change. Rocket Lab’s SEC filing sets out the Q4 2026 target and qualification work.

Is Neutron ready to fly?

No. Opening LC-3 means the launch facility is available as part of Neutron’s planned ground infrastructure; it does not establish that the rocket has completed qualification or is cleared for flight. Rocket Lab said Neutron’s captive “Hungry Hippo” fairing completed qualification testing in December 2025, but the company’s later filing still identified further tank and Archimedes qualification work alongside the Q4 2026 first-launch target. Qualification progress on one component is not the same as completing the vehicle’s overall preparation for flight. Rocket Lab’s fairing update describes the December 2025 qualification milestone.

What the opening means for U.S. launch capacity

LC-3 adds dedicated infrastructure for Rocket Lab’s planned Neutron operations at a U.S. launch site. If Neutron reaches service, the company intends it to provide a reusable medium-lift option alongside its existing launch business. The opening itself does not add proven flight capacity: that depends on completing development, achieving a successful first launch, and establishing operational readiness and cadence.

Rocket Lab reported more than $437 million in new launch contracts during Q2 2026 and after the quarter, and a total launch backlog of more than 90 launches. Those company-reported figures indicate demand across its launch business; they do not, by themselves, establish that those missions are Neutron launches or that Neutron has begun flying. Rocket Lab’s Q2 2026 results report the contract and backlog figures.
