Gmail can automatically show a Gemini summary above some longer email threads in its Android and iOS apps, but it is not a summary of every message and it does not require a Pixel phone. For a summary on demand, open a thread and choose “Summarize this email”; Gmail’s side panel can also answer follow-up questions and help with next steps. Availability depends on the account, plan, language, and smart-feature settings.
What Google changed in Gmail
Google announced automatic mobile summary cards on May 29, 2025. They appear at the top of a thread when Gmail judges a summary useful, such as in a long conversation or one with several replies. Gemini pulls out key points, and Google says the synopsis updates as new replies arrive. The card can be collapsed, and Gmail remembers that collapsed state for that thread.
This automatic card is different from Gemini’s on-demand tools. The card may appear without a prompt; the side panel is a place to request a summary, ask a more specific question, or work with the thread. Neither feature means that every email is automatically displayed as an AI summary.
How to get a Gemini summary of an email
On Android or iPhone
- Open Gmail and open the email thread you want to catch up on.
- If Gmail has generated a summary card, read it above the thread’s messages. Collapse the card if you do not want it taking up space; Gmail remembers the collapsed state for that conversation.
- If there is no card, look for “Summarize this email” at the top of the thread, where the feature is available. Google’s documentation describes tapping this button to summarize a lengthy conversation.
For a more detailed summary or follow-up
Use the Gmail side panel to request a more detailed summary, ask for action items or next steps, or ask a question about a topic or sender. The side panel can also help find details across Gmail content, such as dates, names, confirmation numbers, receipts, vendor bids, and availability. These are user-prompted tasks rather than the automatic card.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Automatic cards, the side panel, and Search AI Overviews
| Experience | How it starts | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile summary card | Gmail may show it automatically when a thread seems to warrant a summary. | The open email thread; Google says the summary can incorporate later replies. |
| Gemini side panel | You ask Gemini for a summary or another task. | A thread, or questions and details involving a topic, sender, or Gmail content. |
| Gmail Search AI Overviews | You ask a natural-language question in Gmail Search. | Concise answers or summaries intended to help find information without opening each message. |
Google’s Workspace update said Gmail Search AI Overviews expanded globally for eligible paid-plan users with English Gmail settings in September 2026. Google gave September 3, 2026, as the start of the consumer rollout and September 21, 2026, for the scheduled-release Workspace rollout. This is a separate Search experience, not the same as a summary card at the top of a thread.
Who can use Gemini in Gmail
Google’s current Gmail product documentation describes Gemini in Gmail on desktop and mobile through Google AI plans for personal accounts or Google Workspace for work. Availability is tied to the account and plan, not a particular handset model; the cited Google documentation does not name a required phone.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
For the May 2025 mobile summary-card rollout, Google listed Business Starter, Standard, and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus; Google One AI Premium; and Gemini Education add-ons among supported offerings. Google also specified that smart features had to be enabled. Those were the offerings stated for that rollout, not a guarantee that every account on those plans has every Gemini feature today.
The later Search AI Overviews rollout has its own eligibility rules. Google listed Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra for consumers, and excluded personal accounts in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Japan for the listed consumer editions. The announcement specified English Gmail settings for the global expansion. Do not assume that eligibility for a thread summary card automatically gives an account access to Search AI Overviews, or vice versa.

Google said the mobile summary cards were English-only at launch. That launch condition does not establish the feature’s current language coverage. Users also need “Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet” and “Google Workspace smart features” enabled for the documented experiences; administrators can control default personalization in Workspace.
Can you turn off or hide the summaries?
For an individual thread, collapse the automatic card; Google says Gmail retains that choice for that thread. The documented smart-feature settings are also relevant: disabling them may affect the documented experiences, but Google’s cited material does not specify a separate, universally available switch just for automatic summary cards or give a current menu path for it. Workspace users may also be subject to administrator-controlled defaults.

What Gmail’s Gemini tools can do beyond summaries
Gmail’s side panel can assist with writing as well as reading. Google documents help polishing a draft, generating email text from a prompt, referencing a Drive file with an @ mention, and producing contextual Smart Reply drafts. Google also described a business drafting capability announced February 19, 2026, that can use relevant emails, chats, and Drive files to prepare a detailed draft with context such as dates and budgets. Review any generated draft before sending it.

Google says the newer business Gmail capabilities use the same enterprise-grade data protections as the rest of Workspace and that business data remains under the customer’s control. The Associated Press reported Google’s statements that analyzed Gmail content would not be used to train the models that improve Gemini and that Google had built an engineering privacy barrier around inbox information. These are provider statements, not an independent security audit.

A summary is a compressed interpretation of a conversation, not a substitute for the original messages when details matter. Check dates, amounts, commitments, names, and action owners in the thread before relying on a summary or sending a Gemini-written reply.
