MEGATRON simulations give scientists a way to connect two different records of the early universe: galaxies observed by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and chemical clues preserved in ancient stars near the Milky Way. By modeling how gas, starlight, supernovae and newly made elements interact, the project tests possible histories that could link those distant galaxies to the stars we can study locally. The simulations model those histories; they do not directly observe the first stars or prove exactly how they formed.
How can JWST observations and ancient stars tell us about the same early era?
JWST observes young, distant galaxies as they appeared in the early universe. Ancient stars in and around the Milky Way offer a different kind of evidence: their chemical composition can preserve clues about earlier generations of stars and the material from which they formed. Inferring earlier stellar and galactic history from the chemistry of surviving old stars is called stellar archaeology.
The two records are complementary, not interchangeable. JWST provides views of galaxies at great distances and early cosmic times; the chemistry of nearby stellar fossils offers evidence about material processed by earlier stars. Neither record alone supplies a complete account of how the first stars formed and enriched their surroundings. A simulation can test a physical story that connects them: what early stars might have done to the gas and elements that later generations inherited.
In astronomy, “metals” means all elements heavier than helium, not just metallic materials in everyday usage. Their abundances help researchers trace how earlier stars changed their environments.

What does the MEGATRON simulation follow?
MEGATRON models a galaxy’s evolution starting with pristine gas containing no heavy elements, representing conditions shortly after the Big Bang. It follows the formation of first-generation stars, the radiation they emit, their supernova explosions and the dispersal of newly forged elements. Later stars and galaxies can then form from gas affected by those earlier events.
The important feature is that the simulation tracks gas movement, starlight and changing chemical composition together over billions of years. These processes affect one another: radiation changes the surrounding gas, while stellar deaths return energy and elements to it. According to the University of Bath’s project announcement, MEGATRON resolves gas structures that simpler models can miss. Its results suggest that simplifying or separating the processes can understate stellar radiation and miss complex chemical behavior around galaxies.

This is a framework for testing explanations against observations, not a recording of a galaxy’s actual past. The modeled system is expected to grow into one with a mass similar to the Milky Way, but that modeled growth should not be confused with a direct observation of the Milky Way’s formation.
What does the project add to the interpretation of cosmic evidence?
MEGATRON’s role is to supply a physical connection between evidence collected in very different ways. A model can explore whether a proposed history of early star formation and enrichment is consistent with both the kinds of galaxies JWST sees and the chemical patterns found in ancient stars. That helps researchers compare competing ideas about the first stars; it does not establish that every event in a simulation happened in precisely that way.

Dr. Martin Rey of the University of Bath described the approach this way: “The James Webb Space Telescope gives us a direct glimpse of the infant Universe, while stellar archaeology allows us to study the relics of those earliest times in our own Galactic neighbourhood. MEGATRON provides a physical bridge between the two.”
| Evidence stream | What it contributes | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| JWST observations | Views of young, distant galaxies, providing evidence about galaxies in the early universe. | They do not by themselves provide the complete chemical history preserved in nearby ancient stars. |
| Ancient-star chemistry | Abundance patterns in surviving old stars that can preserve clues about earlier stellar generations. | Those clues alone do not show the full appearance or evolution of distant early galaxies. |
| MEGATRON simulations | A modeled account of how stars, radiation, gas and elements could connect the two records. | A simulation is not a direct detection of individual first stars or proof that one modeled history is uniquely correct. |
What does one MEGATRON paper predict about tiny dwarf galaxies?
One identified 2026 study, “MEGATRON: how the first stars can create an iron metallicity plateau in the smallest dwarf galaxies,” reports quantitative predictions for simulated dwarf galaxies. Its abstract is available in the Phys.org record; the claims below are results of that specific simulation study, not measurements of the universe’s overall dwarf-galaxy population.

- For dwarf galaxies with stellar masses at or below 100,000 solar masses, the simulated low-mass population has a mean stellar iron abundance around [Fe/H] ≈ −2.5.
- About 20% of the simulated dwarf galaxies fall into a tail with mean [Fe/H] ≤ −3. This is a modeled fraction, not an observed cosmic prevalence.
- The authors link the modeled plateau to enrichment by Population III pair-instability supernovae. Population III refers to the first generation of stars; pair-instability supernovae are the proposed explosions implicated in this particular modeled enrichment pathway.
- The abstract reports that the effect persists across large changes to assumptions about Population II feedback, and in bound satellites of the central galaxy. Population II feedback refers to the modeled effects of later generations of stars on their surroundings.
[Fe/H] expresses iron abundance relative to hydrogen in logarithmic form, compared with the Sun: more negative values indicate less iron relative to hydrogen. The paper’s result is therefore a modeled chemical pattern in a particular low-mass regime, not a claim that all small galaxies share one abundance or that the first stars’ properties have been measured directly.
Who is behind MEGATRON, and what is its reported timeline?
The University of Bath leads the collaboration, with researchers from the University of Chicago and the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris. The University of Bath reports that the project began in 2023 and is scheduled to run through 2030. It also says the next generation of simulations has received an allocation of 40 million processor hours on UK national supercomputers.
