0VIX’s agent-based risk model simulates many borrowers with different multi-asset portfolios, then tests how price shocks, collateral limits and liquidation mechanics affect under-collateralization. Its results help explore how a lending market might behave under specified scenarios; they do not prove that 0VIX is safe or solvent today.
What 0VIX’s market-risk assessment is trying to measure
0VIX is presented as a Polygon-based decentralized lending and borrowing protocol. Users supply crypto assets and borrow against eligible collateral; when a position breaches the protocol’s risk constraints, some collateral may be liquidated. The risk question is therefore not only whether asset prices fall, but whether the protocol can liquidate enough collateral, quickly and economically, to cover outstanding loans.
The study at the center of this approach is Amit Chaudhary and Daniele Pinna’s Market risk assessment: A multi-asset, agent-based approach applied to the 0VIX lending protocol, dated April 21, 2022. The authors describe simulating ensembles of users exposed to price-driven liquidation risk. In its official-site description, 0VIX also advertises quantitative risk research, multi-scenario stress testing, toxicity numbers and 24-hour liquidation-probability information. Those advertised indicators are not, by themselves, evidence of the protocol’s present solvency.
How the agent-based model represents a lending market
An agent-based model represents the market through simulated participants—here, borrowers and potential liquidators—rather than treating all deposits and loans as one average position. Each borrower agent has a portfolio of collateral and borrowed assets. The model can vary portfolio size, loan-to-value preferences and asset combinations, using observed portfolio-size distributions and other assumptions to create heterogeneous users.

Positions, LTV limits and liquidation triggers
Loan-to-value (LTV) limits constrain borrowing against collateral. Because limits can differ by asset, a portfolio’s exposure depends on which assets are supplied and borrowed, not just its total value. As prices change, the value of collateral relative to debt changes. When a simulated position crosses the protocol’s tolerance, it becomes eligible for liquidation under the modeled rules.
The simulator varies asset-specific LTV limits, liquidation incentives and maximum liquidation size. These settings affect when a position becomes vulnerable, how much can be liquidated, and which collateral and loan assets are involved. A more generous incentive may make a liquidation more attractive to an outside liquidator, but the model must account for the cost and feasibility of executing it.

Liquidators are economic actors, not automatic cleanup
The model does not assume that every eligible liquidation will be completed. A liquidator considers whether the expected return from seizing collateral and repaying a loan exceeds trading and slippage costs. The model includes choices about which collateral to seize and which loan to repay. If the transaction is not profitable under the assumed conditions, an eligible position may remain unresolved in the simulation.
Price paths and recorded outcomes
After generating borrower portfolios, the simulator applies historical or randomly generated price trajectories. Across those paths, it records outcomes such as how many users are liquidated, the value liquidated, and whether liquidators can profitably execute. This makes it possible to examine not just whether a price shock crosses a threshold, but how portfolio composition and liquidation economics shape the consequences.

What the published 0VIX simulation reported
Chaudhary and Pinna’s 2022 paper gives several figures that need to be read as results from that study’s assumptions and scenarios, not as live measurements:
- Historical stress example: the authors used a 14% one-day decline in MATIC as a historical worst-day stress example.
- Stress comparison scale: the paper describes comparing 10,000 simulated price trajectories across 100 protocol portfolios.
- High-volatility result: with the paper’s suggested liquidation LTV and incentive parameters, it reported less than 0.1% default risk when hourly volatility for ETH, BTC and MATIC increased by more than ten times.
The last figure is not a general probability that a 0VIX borrower, market or protocol will default. It is conditional on the paper’s chosen parameters, price data, user behavior and execution assumptions. It also should not be conflated with a guarantee that liquidations will always protect lenders: a model’s output describes what occurred in its simulated cases.

How to assess whether a stress test is informative
A useful assessment starts by checking what is being simulated and what the output actually means. The following framework helps distinguish a meaningful resilience analysis from a headline probability detached from its assumptions.
- Specify assets and risk limits. Identify the collateral and borrowed assets represented, along with each asset’s LTV limit. Different asset mixes and limits can produce materially different exposures.
- Inspect the simulated borrower population. Check how agents are assigned portfolio sizes, LTV preferences, and collateral-and-borrow combinations. A model built from a narrow or unrealistic population may miss concentrated exposures.
- Examine the price scenarios and horizon. Look for both historical crisis paths and synthetic high-volatility paths, and note the period simulated. Historical paths show how a market reacted to particular past moves; synthetic paths explore conditions that may not have occurred in the chosen data.
- Review execution assumptions. Check how liquidity, slippage, liquidation incentives and maximum liquidation size are modeled. Determine whether the liquidator can choose assets and whether a liquidation proceeds only when it is profitable after costs.
- Read several outputs together. Consider under-collateralization probability, liquidation volume, remaining collateral and liquidator profitability. A single probability can hide whether the model assumes that a liquidation is executable, how much value is exposed, or what remains after the event.
- Compare parameter sets and trade-offs. Repeat the analysis across parameter grids. Tighter LTV limits or stronger incentives may alter resilience, but the assessment should also consider borrower costs and liquidity effects rather than treating risk reduction as free.
When comparing 0VIX’s approach with another DeFi risk model, compare the portfolio scope, whether users are passive or adaptive, the price-path method, treatment of market depth and slippage, liquidator profitability assumptions, incentive calibration, time horizon and output definitions. A default probability, an under-collateralization probability and a liquidation-volume estimate are not interchangeable measures.

What the model leaves out—and why that matters
The paper says its model is valid for passive user behavior and avoids horizons longer than daily because it does not include dynamic intra-day portfolio reallocation. Borrowers who actively add collateral, repay debt or move positions during a fast market change are therefore not fully represented by that setup.
It also uses an assumed slippage function. The authors identify richer centralized-exchange order-book and decentralized-liquidity data as possible improvements. Since liquidation profitability depends on execution costs and available liquidity, those assumptions can influence whether the simulated liquidator acts and whether a position is resolved. A result based on modeled slippage should not be read as a real-time assessment of market depth.
Can a stress test prove that a lending market is safe?
No. A stress test can show how a model behaves under specified price paths, portfolio distributions and protocol parameters. It can reveal failure pathways, compare design choices and identify where liquidation incentives or collateral limits appear insufficient. It cannot establish that every future market move, borrower response or liquidity condition has been captured.
That distinction is especially important for the 0VIX figures from 2022: they are historical simulation outputs, not a current solvency guarantee. A present-day assessment would need current protocol parameters and relevant market and portfolio data, along with clearly stated model assumptions. Without those, the paper is evidence about a particular modeled design and scenario set—not a live safety certificate.
