Capcom’s REX project is a staged evolution of its proprietary RE ENGINE, not a new consumer product or a clean-sheet replacement. Its aim is to make the development environment easier to scale and to support more efficient workflows, including AI-assisted testing and quality assurance (QA). Capcom has not published measured studio-wide efficiency gains or a rollout schedule.
What REX is—and what it is not
Capcom’s 2025 integrated report calls REX the next generation of RE ENGINE, but describes the plan as adding new technology step by step rather than replacing the engine outright. The original RE ENGINE development began in connection with Resident Evil 7, released in 2017. REX is therefore best understood as an ongoing modernization of an established production platform.
RE ENGINE already supports rendering, editing, playtesting and QA, and lets Capcom share assets and move personnel between projects. Capcom’s 2025 report says its R&D Foundational Technology Department has approximately 200 engineers, including around 160 responsible for engine development; those figures describe that department, not all developers working on REX.
REX is an internal development project. The available announcements do not identify it as a product for sale, nor do they say that it generates finished game content. The AI angle is about helping development and QA workflows.

Why Capcom says the development environment needs to change
In its August 25, 2026 announcement for the RE:2026 conference, Capcom said projects have grown substantially in assets and code compared with the engine’s 2017 development environment. The company identified slower asset retrieval, editor operations and script builds as problems that reduce iteration speed. It also said more than 2,000 active users now use the engine, increasing the need for usability improvements.
Capcom also pointed to autonomous AI agents for testing and QA as an area that needs a more flexible environment. The conference announcement included a separate session on autonomous-play AI for testing and “shift-left” QA—moving testing earlier in development. These are stated areas of interest, not proof that autonomous agents are already deployed across Capcom games.

What REX’s reported components do
Capcom’s conference announcement established REX’s motivations and topics, while component-level descriptions were reported by Gamebiz after programmer Satoshi Ishida’s REX presentation at RE:2026 on October 2, 2026. The descriptions below reflect that event report, not an independently audited technical specification.

Gamebiz also reported that shared, standardized programming-language rules are intended to make systems easier for developers and AI to read. The presentation’s reported longer-term ambitions include AI code assistance and automated test play. Those goals should not be confused with a published deployment roadmap or evidence of autonomous AI development across Capcom titles.

How Capcom frames generative AI in game development
In its FY2025 results Q&A, Capcom said it wants people to handle the creativity at the core of game experiences, while generative AI improves routine-work efficiency so developers can devote more time to value creation. The company said it is incorporating generative AI into development stages and making concrete progress toward implementing it in some areas.
“At this stage, our policy is to use generative AI to improve the efficiency of routine operations so that our developers can devote more time to essential value creation.”

Capcom also cautioned that game development is multifaceted and complex, and that it will take time to quantify efficiency results. That limits what can responsibly be claimed about REX today: Capcom has described intended workflow improvements, but has not reported measured studio-wide gains.

- How much faster development or QA will become.
- Whether AI-assisted systems will create game assets or operate autonomously in production.
Capcom’s 2025 integrated report describes an incremental engine evolution, and its FY2025 Q&A says quantitative efficiency results will take time. Gamebiz’s component descriptions add examples from a presentation, but do not provide an authoritative deployment schedule.
