They can support real-time tracking when a phone or gateway is listening, but “real-time” does not mean uninterrupted operation in every environment: a tag may advertise less often when harvested energy is scarce, and an RF-powered tag may need a nearby energizer.
How a battery-free BLE tag works
A battery-free tag captures energy from its surroundings, stores some of it briefly in a capacitor, and uses that energy to run its electronics and send Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisements. The examples documented here use either photovoltaic cells that harvest light or RF hardware that harvests radio-frequency energy. These are different ways to power a tag, not a single universal batteryless design.
For a light-powered design, the available light affects how much energy the tag can collect. STMicroelectronics’ STDES-BFTAG01 uses a photovoltaic transducer and capacitor, and its BLE transmissions become more frequent as light increases. Silicon Labs has demonstrated a similar indoor photovoltaic-cell-and-capacitor arrangement; its phone app records capacitor voltage, received signal strength indicator (RSSI), and transmission timestamps.
RF-powered designs collect energy from a radio signal. Powercast’s PCTB100, for example, harvests energy in the 902–928 MHz band and sends temperature and humidity data over BLE at 2.4 GHz. Paragon ID’s XgenTag-R is described as activated by UHF RFID, with an activation distance of up to 25 metres on the company’s current solution page.

What “real-time tracking” means here
The tag does not need to calculate or transmit a GPS position to be useful for tracking. It sends BLE advertisements, and a receiving system—such as a phone or BLE gateway—must scan for them. The system can use received advertisements and their timestamps to register a tag’s presence; RSSI can also provide a signal-strength measurement. The Silicon Labs demonstration, for example, records RSSI and transmission times in its phone app.
“Real-time” therefore describes how promptly the receiving system can detect advertisements as they arrive, not a guarantee that the tag transmits continuously. A light-powered tag may advertise less often in darkness, while an RF-powered tag may depend on an energizer being nearby. Whether the system can report a useful location also depends on the receiving setup; the tag alone is not a universal GPS-like tracker.

These published figures describe different designs and conditions, so they are not directly interchangeable. For example, the PCTB100’s listed operating distance is not the same measurement as ST’s BLE communication range, and Paragon ID’s XgenTag-R activation distance is an RFID figure rather than a stated BLE range.
Where battery-free tags make sense
Documented application areas include inventory and asset tracking, logistics, healthcare, smart retail, datacenters, perishable-goods monitoring, smart buildings, and location management for people or equipment. The common advantage is avoiding a primary battery in settings where replacing one would be inconvenient or where the tag can be designed around an available energy source and receiving system.

The environment matters as much as the radio. A light-harvesting tag needs sufficient light for its intended transmission pattern; an RF-harvesting design depends on access to the energy source it uses. The installation also needs a way to receive BLE advertisements or, for an RFID-powered design, provide the relevant RFID activation. Matching those conditions is what makes a battery-free tracking setup practical.
What to check before choosing a tag
- Energy source: Confirm whether the tag harvests ambient light, RF energy, or UHF RFID energy, and whether that source is available where the tag will be installed.
- Transmission continuity: Look for the advertising interval under the lighting or energizer conditions you expect. “Up to once per second” in bright conditions, for example, is not a promise of that interval in darkness.
- Receiving system: Establish whether the deployment will use smartphones, BLE gateways, RFID energizers, or a combination, and where receivers must be placed.
- Range and meaning: Check whether a published distance refers to BLE communication, RF operating distance, or RFID activation. These are different measurements and should not be treated as equivalent.
- Payload: Verify that the tag sends the data the application needs. The PCTB100 is documented as transmitting temperature and humidity; the cited material does not establish the sensing payload for every other design.
- Product readiness: Distinguish evaluation hardware and development kits from industrial solutions intended for deployment. ST’s cited assembled board, for instance, is explicitly for performance evaluation only.
Why a battery-free tag is not automatically a consumer tracker
The examples here are specialized components, demonstrations, development hardware, or industrial solutions—not evidence that every battery-free BLE tag is a ready-to-use consumer tracker. A practical system must pair the tag’s harvesting conditions with compatible receiving infrastructure. Without enough harvested energy, or without a receiver scanning for its advertisements, the tag cannot provide the expected tracking updates.
