Materials intelligence is the use of materials science, structured data, simulation and machine learning to understand how materials behave and how they can be used more effectively. In semiconductor manufacturing, that knowledge matters because a chip is built through many tightly controlled steps involving specialized materials—not just through transistor design. The composition, purity and interfaces of those materials, along with how each process is controlled, can affect whether a wafer becomes a working integrated circuit.
What materials intelligence means
Materials intelligence connects knowledge about a material to data and decisions. It can help researchers identify promising candidates, help engineers understand process behavior, and help manufacturers monitor whether materials and processes remain within required limits. It is an enabling capability, not a chip, a single AI model or a consumer product.
In a 2020 review published online in Nature Reviews Materials (volume 6, 2021), Rohit Batra, Le Song and Rampi Ramprasad describe the core idea as using machine-learning algorithms with existing materials data to create surrogate models that predict materials properties and performance. A surrogate model approximates results that might otherwise require more computationally intensive simulation or physical testing. Its predictions still need validation against measurements or experiments.
The broader ecosystem includes data repositories, strategies for generating data, ways to represent materials as model-ready fingerprints or features, model training and more advanced algorithms. Machine learning is one component; the quality and context of the underlying data are essential too.

How a materials-intelligence workflow works
A useful way to understand the workflow is as a loop between data, prediction and physical validation. A model can narrow the search or suggest where to look, while laboratory and manufacturing results establish whether the prediction holds under real conditions.
- Collect relevant data. Assemble available information about composition, structure, processing, metrology and performance. Measurements without enough context about how they were produced can be difficult to compare.
- Represent the material. Convert its composition, structure or other relevant characteristics into a consistent fingerprint or feature set a model can use.
- Train and validate a model. Fit the model to known measurements or simulation results, then test whether its predictions hold against suitable data not used to train it.
- Screen candidates or conditions. Use the validated model to prioritize materials or process conditions for further investigation.
- Test in the lab or fab. Run physical experiments or manufacturing trials to check the prediction in the conditions that matter.
- Feed validated results back. Add the new measurements and their context to the data system so later analysis can build on them.
This loop can speed up screening, but it does not make experiments unnecessary. A prediction is useful only to the extent that its data, assumptions and validation fit the decision at hand.
Why materials matter throughout chip fabrication
A semiconductor is the result of a long sequence of processes in which specialized materials and chemicals support patterning, deposition, cleaning, etching, doping, planarization, packaging and contamination control. High-purity process materials and gases are used at different points in fabrication. Their specified composition and behavior matter because each step has to work within a controlled process, and the output of one step becomes part of the conditions for later steps.

Materials intelligence can help make those relationships more legible. By connecting information about a material with process conditions, metrology and performance, engineers can investigate how a change in inputs or conditions relates to observed results. In manufacturing, the concept therefore extends beyond discovering a new material: it can also support traceable material records, validated simulation models, process optimization, defect analysis and quality monitoring.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe practical value is better-informed and more reproducible decisions across materials development and manufacturing. The cited sources do not establish a semiconductor-specific yield increase, cost reduction, cycle-time improvement or market-size figure attributable to materials intelligence, so none should be assumed from the concept alone.
Where materials intelligence fits in the value chain
| Value-chain stage | What the data and models can support | What still needs to be established |
|---|---|---|
| Materials discovery | Screening candidate compositions or properties using materials data and predictive models. | Whether a candidate can be made, measured and validated for its intended use. |
| Process development | Connecting material characteristics and process conditions to measurements and performance. | Whether the relationship holds in the relevant process and equipment conditions. |
| Manufacturing and quality | Traceable data, quality monitoring, defect analysis and process optimization. | Whether the available data are sufficiently standardized and representative for the production decision. |
These stages call for different evidence. A model useful for ranking research candidates is not automatically appropriate for a fab decision. The relevant question is not simply whether a system uses AI, but whether its data and validation match the value-chain stage it is meant to serve.

How to evaluate a materials-intelligence approach
Organizations comparing systems or programs can use four practical dimensions:
- Data provenance and traceability: Can users tell where material and process data came from, how they were generated and how they were standardized?
- Prediction and interpretability: How quickly can the method screen possibilities, and can users understand its predictions well enough to assess them?
- Validation and integration: Does the workflow connect model outputs to simulation, laboratory measurements and relevant fab data, with validation appropriate to the intended use?
- Value-chain fit: Is the approach designed for discovery, process development, quality control or high-volume manufacturing?
These are complementary considerations rather than a single ranking. A fast prediction may be useful for narrowing a search, while production decisions may require stronger validation, traceability and connection to manufacturing records.
Examples of data resources and commercial workflows
Materials-informatics work draws on repositories and data resources including the Materials Project, AFLOW, C2DB, Materials Cloud and NIMS MatNavi. Such resources can contribute to a data ecosystem, but a repository is not by itself a complete materials-intelligence workflow: material representation, validation and connection to the relevant application remain important.

Siemens’ Simcenter Materials Science and Management illustrates an enterprise workflow built around centralized materials data, validated simulation-ready material models, multiscale modeling, AI-powered property prediction and a connected materials digital thread. These capabilities show how the concept can be organized into tools for engineering and simulation; they do not establish a particular semiconductor manufacturing outcome.

Semiconductor manufacturing depends on suppliers of specialized materials and gases as well as the chipmakers and process teams that specify, qualify and use them. EMD Electronics is one named example: it is the U.S. and Canadian electronics business of Merck KGaA and supplies specialty materials and gases used in integrated-circuit and chip fabrication. It is an example, not an exhaustive list of suppliers.

At SEMI’s 2025 Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Conference, Lu Gan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy & Roadmap at EMD Electronics, was listed as presenting “Materials Intelligence: Enabling the Future of Technology.” SEMI described its network as more than 3,000 member companies and 1.5 million professionals in 2025. Those figures describe SEMI’s membership and professional network, not the size of a materials-intelligence market or a measured manufacturing benefit.
What materials intelligence can—and cannot—tell you
Its promise is to make materials knowledge more usable: screen possibilities sooner, connect data that would otherwise be hard to compare, and improve understanding of how materials and processes relate. Its limits follow from the same dependence on evidence. Incomplete or inconsistent data can weaken a prediction; a model trained for one context may not transfer to another; and manufacturing use requires validation appropriate to the decision.
For semiconductor readers, the central point is that progress depends on more than transistor architecture. The materials entering fabrication, the interfaces they create, and the control and documentation of each process all contribute to the manufacturing system that produces a chip.
