It manages torrent trackers and Usenet indexers in one place, then synchronizes their configuration with supported apps such as Sonarr and Radarr. You can also search indexers from Prowlarr, monitor their health, and configure proxy handling for individual indexers.
What Prowlarr does
Prowlarr centralizes indexer setup for the *arr ecosystem. Instead of adding the same tracker or Usenet indexer separately in each app, you can configure it in Prowlarr and synchronize it to connected applications. Prowlarr describes itself as an indexer manager and proxy built to integrate with PVR apps; its project README says it supports both torrent trackers and Usenet indexers.
It is not a media player or a download client. Prowlarr manages how supported applications find releases; those applications and the rest of your media setup handle their own roles.
Supported indexers and features
The project README in 2025 listed 24 native Usenet indexers and more than 500 torrent trackers. These are project-maintained counts, not independent measurements, and the available definitions can change. Prowlarr also supports generic Newznab and Torznab providers and custom Cardigann YAML definitions.

- Search and monitoring: Search by category or parameters, review indexer history and statistics, and receive health or status notifications.
- Release handling: Push multiple releases to supported applications.

Connect Prowlarr to Sonarr, Radarr, or another app
Install Prowlarr and make sure it can reach the applications you want to connect. The exact installation steps depend on the operating system or container image. The official installation guide covers supported deployment options: Prowlarr installation.
- Add an indexer: Open Prowlarr’s web interface, go to Indexers, and add the provider. Enter the credentials or other fields it requires, select Test, and save if the test succeeds.
- Add an application: Go to Settings > Apps, choose the supported app, and enter its server URL and API key. The server URL must be reachable from Prowlarr; for Docker deployments, that commonly means using the correct container network address rather than assuming that localhost refers to another container.
- Test and save: Use the application test, then save the connection. Consult the Prowlarr quick-start guide for the documented setup flow and optional API path and grab-link settings.
- Verify synchronization: Check the connected app’s indexer list after Prowlarr syncs. If an indexer is missing, check the app connection, sync configuration, and whether the indexer or its categories are supported by that app.
- Fine-tune behavior: Adjust categories, tags, priorities, and any per-indexer proxy settings to suit the connected applications.
Prowlarr supports synchronization with Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Readarr, and Mylar3. Private trackers may require an account, passkey, or API key from that tracker; Prowlarr does not provide those credentials.

Install options and maintenance considerations
Official deployment guidance lists Windows x64 and x86 installers and manual archives; Linux x64, ARM, ARM64, and Musl archives; macOS Intel and Arm packages; BSD builds; Docker guidance; and an Arch Linux AUR package example. The Prowlarr team explicitly says it does not provide an official Docker image. The site names community images including hotio/prowlarr and lscr.io/linuxserver/prowlarr. Choose a deployment based on the system you can maintain, not just on how quickly it installs. Updates, file permissions, networking, and backups remain your responsibility. If Prowlarr is containerized, plan its configuration storage and network access deliberately. Also ensure the wider media setup can access its download and final media folders; folder paths and permissions that differ between applications or containers can prevent expected handoffs.

Per-indexer proxy support and its limits
Prowlarr’s proxy options apply to indexers and include SOCKS4, SOCKS5, HTTP, and FlareSolverr. That can be useful when a particular provider needs alternate routing or anti-bot handling, without applying the same route to every indexer. It does not make Prowlarr a general-purpose anonymity system. Check proxy compatibility, provider terms, and local law for each use case.
API and automation
Prowlarr publishes an OpenAPI v1 interface. Its documented endpoints cover applications, indexers, indexer proxies, searches, notifications, backups, logs, system status, routes, localization, and restart or shutdown operations. That makes the API useful for scripts, monitoring, and configuration automation. The official API documentation describes the interface.

Treat the API key as an administrative credential: do not publish it in scripts or logs, and avoid exposing the Prowlarr interface to the public internet unless you have secured access appropriately.

Prowlarr is a good fit when you use multiple supported *arr apps and want one place to manage a mix of torrent and Usenet indexers. Its strongest practical advantage is shared configuration, complemented by built-in search, monitoring, and per-indexer proxy controls. If you use only one app and a small number of indexers, adding another service may not save much setup effort; weigh the centralized management against the extra service to install and maintain.
