The hoped-for payoff is more host-CPU capacity for applications, stronger separation between tenant workloads and cloud-provider services, and more flexible storage. The bet succeeds only if cloud operators and enterprises adopt the hardware and its software at production scale.
What is an infrastructure processing unit?
An IPU is infrastructure hardware installed in or alongside a server to process work that would otherwise consume host-CPU resources. Intel describes its IPU platform as a way to accelerate, secure and connect systems from edge to cloud. Depending on the product and software, that infrastructure work can include packet processing, network and storage virtualization, encryption, compression and service-control functions.
The aim is not to make applications run faster by adding another general-purpose CPU. It is to reserve more of the host CPU for tenant or business applications while moving infrastructure services onto a device designed to run them. Intel also presents IPUs as a way to provide virtual storage detached from a particular server’s local drives.
What Intel’s E2100 contains
Intel specifies its E2100 adapter for either 2×100GbE or 1×200GbE connectivity and 16 Arm Neoverse N1 cores. Intel’s product description also lists a packet-processing pipeline, NVMe, compression and cryptography accelerators, infrastructure-workload isolation, virtualized-network offload and detached virtualized storage. Those are product capabilities, not a guarantee that every deployment uses every feature or sees the same performance benefit.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How is an IPU different from a DPU or SmartNIC?
The labels overlap. DPU is the term commonly used by vendors such as NVIDIA and AMD/Pensando for data-processing hardware that offloads data-center infrastructure functions; SmartNIC is another broad label for network adapters with processing or programmable capabilities. Intel’s IPU is in the same general category. The label alone does not tell a buyer how much work the device can take over or how it is isolated from host applications.
Intel’s emphasis is on moving substantial parts of the networking and storage stacks—including control-plane functions—off the host, and using hardware to separate provider infrastructure services from tenant applications. A simpler network adapter may accelerate packet processing without taking on that broader scope. The meaningful comparison is therefore the actual device, software and deployment model, rather than the product name.

| Comparison point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Implementation | An ASIC is purpose-built and generally trades some flexibility for optimized power and performance; an FPGA can be reprogrammed to support changing data paths and workloads. |
| Offload scope | Determine whether the device handles packet processing alone or also networking and storage virtualization, encryption, compression and service-control functions. |
| Isolation | Check how provider services are separated from tenant workloads and whether enforcement is in hardware, software, or both. |
| Performance | Compare supported link rates, latency under the intended workload and host-CPU use—not just the headline Ethernet speed. |
| Software and operations | Check support for relevant frameworks and drivers, such as IPDK, DPDK, SPDK or P4, plus integration with orchestration and the operator’s existing systems. |
| Deployment maturity | Establish whether the offer is a reference platform or a production-supported solution, and who provides integration and operational support. |
Why Intel made this a big bet
Data-center servers spend CPU cycles on more than customer applications. Networking, storage and security services also need processing, and those functions can compete with applications for the same host resources. The IPU proposition is to move that work into dedicated infrastructure hardware while giving cloud operators more control over how services are isolated and delivered.
Intel’s 2021 launch announcement called the IPU “a programmable networking device designed to enable cloud and communication service providers to reduce overhead and free up performance for central processing units (CPUs).” In a 2022 briefing reported by Electronic Design on May 25, Intel vice president Patty Kummrow said, “IPU is a key part of the future data center architecture.” The ambition was to build a platform category, not merely sell a faster network card.

Intel pursued two hardware paths. ASIC products target predictable, optimized infrastructure functions; FPGA products let customers or providers adapt the data path. That combination could serve operators who want efficient fixed-function acceleration as well as those whose services change often enough to justify programmability. It also means the bet depends on software: hardware has limited value if providers cannot integrate, operate and update its offload functions within their infrastructure.

Does an IPU actually free CPU capacity?
It can, if the device takes over work that would otherwise run on the host and if the deployment’s software can use the offload. The amount reclaimed depends on the services being moved, traffic and storage patterns, configuration, and the host and adapter software. A headline link speed by itself does not establish how much application capacity an IPU returns.
There is a workload-specific result worth distinguishing from a general promise. An Intel/Napatech solution brief reports MIT analysis comparing two named microservices use cases using an FPGA IPU and Napatech virtualized data plane against a standard NIC. In those two cases, the analysis reported 50% higher system throughput and projected approximately one-third fewer servers. Those figures apply to the specified use cases and comparison; they are not a universal benchmark or independently established result across data centers. Separately, Electronic Design quoted NVIDIA’s 2022 claim that more than one-third of CPU capacity is wasted on infrastructure workloads. That is NVIDIA’s attributed claim, not an IPU measurement applicable to every operator.

Are Intel IPUs available to buy?
Intel describes the E2100 as a current cloud and enterprise adapter, and its materials identify reference platforms and partner-supported routes toward production. But the product information summarized here does not establish regional availability, pricing, orderability, delivery timing or volume supply. Nor does an announced roadmap shipment date by itself prove that a product is broadly procurable today.
For an actual deployment, ask Intel or an authorized solution partner about the exact adapter and platform, supported server configurations, software stack, production support and supply in the buyer’s region. Intel says partners bring IPU reference platforms into production and provide solution support; that makes partner readiness part of procurement, not an afterthought.
Will IPUs matter for AI and cloud data centers?
IPUs are relevant to AI infrastructure because AI clusters still require networking, storage, security and virtualization around their accelerators and host CPUs. Offloading those services could leave more server resources for workloads or reduce infrastructure overhead. Intel’s FPGA platform material explicitly includes AI infrastructure among its target workloads.
An IPU is not, on the evidence described here, a replacement for a GPU or another AI compute accelerator. Its case is supporting and managing the infrastructure that connects and serves compute. Whether it matters at scale will depend on whether cloud providers and enterprises adopt the cards, validate useful gains in their own workloads, and can support the required software and operations. Intel’s combination of ASIC efficiency and FPGA flexibility addresses different implementation needs, but adoption—not the roadmap’s ambition—is the decisive test.
