Start a short-range radio design by defining its range, data, latency, battery, network, and target-country requirements. Then evaluate a standards-based radio module or development kit in the intended enclosure before designing a custom RF front end. Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz band; IEEE 802.15.4 offers low-data-rate, low-power personal-area-network PHYs across multiple bands. Neither protocol name alone tells you how far a finished product will work or whether it will meet regional regulations.

1. Write down what the radio must do

Translate the product concept into requirements before comparing chipsets or antennas. A radio that works across a room may not work through walls, and a link that transfers a large file quickly may use too much energy for a battery-powered sensor. Record the intended operating conditions, not just an ideal range.

Requirement What to specify
Range Desired indoor and outdoor distances, obstacles, and the environments in which the link must remain reliable.
Data Typical and peak payload size, sustained data rate, and how often devices transmit.
Timing Maximum acceptable latency and any need for predictable delivery timing.
Power Battery life target, battery or other power source, and expected sleep and wake behavior.
Network Number of nodes, topology, mobility, and whether devices communicate directly or through other nodes.
Deployment Target countries, likely interference sources, enclosure materials, and where the antenna can be placed.

These requirements let you compare candidates on usable range in the real environment, throughput, latency, energy per delivered bit, network size and topology, coexistence, ecosystem maturity, antenna constraints, certification needs, and module or development-kit cost. Measure the factors that depend on your product rather than treating a radio family as a performance guarantee.

2. Choose a radio family and band

Bluetooth and IEEE 802.15.4 are different starting points, not interchangeable guarantees of range, throughput, or battery life. Bluetooth’s radio specification covers 2.400–2.4835 GHz. IEEE 802.15.4 defines PHY and MAC specifications for low-data-rate wireless connectivity among fixed, portable, and moving devices, including devices with very limited battery consumption. The IEEE 802.15.4-2024 standard was published on 2024-12-12.

Option What the specifications establish What to verify for your product
Bluetooth The Bluetooth radio specification covers 2.400–2.4835 GHz. Whether a candidate implementation meets your range, data, timing, power, network, coexistence, and target-market requirements.
IEEE 802.15.4 A low-data-rate PHY/MAC standard with implementations that may use 868 MHz, 915 MHz, or 2.4 GHz profiles, depending on region and product requirements. The implementation’s band and channel plan, network behavior, performance, and compliance for each target country.

Band choice affects antenna size, propagation, available channels, exposure to interference, and regulatory limits. The precise channels and permitted operating conditions vary by market, so confirm the applicable channel plan for every target country rather than assuming a band is available everywhere. NXP’s 802.15.4 guide describes 868 MHz, 915 MHz, and 2.4 GHz options and notes that high-power modules can achieve substantially greater range than standard modules; that is design context, not a range promise for a different module or product.

When 2.4 GHz is under consideration

Both Bluetooth and some IEEE 802.15.4 implementations use 2.4 GHz. Compare the actual radio, channel plan, antenna, and expected radio traffic in the intended setting. Coexistence in the band is a system-level concern: validate packet reliability and performance where the device will operate rather than assuming that protocol selection alone resolves interference.

Do not select on range alone

Range depends on transmit power, antenna gain and efficiency, receiver sensitivity, data rate, packet size, obstructions, interference, and applicable regulatory limits. A more powerful transmitter is not automatically a more reliable link. A short link can fail if the remote receiver is overloaded, while a nominally capable radio can perform poorly after its antenna is detuned by the product enclosure.

3. Prototype with a module or development kit first

For a first design, choose a standards-based module or development kit with an established software stack. This lets you test the radio behavior and application requirements before taking on a custom RF front end. IEEE 802.15.4 is a PHY/MAC standard; it does not by itself certify a finished product or establish that a particular module meets your system requirements.

  1. Shortlist candidates against the requirements table. Check supported protocol, band and channels, available stack, host interface, operating modes, and the vendor’s antenna and layout guidance.
  2. Build a working prototype with the kit. Exercise representative payloads, traffic patterns, node counts, and sleep/wake cycles instead of testing only a continuous data stream.
  3. Measure the system. Check packet reliability, link performance in the intended environment, current draw, and coexistence. Repeat tests in the actual enclosure and with the antenna in its intended position.
  4. Keep the first antenna layout close to the vendor reference. Where the design permits, reserve an RF test connector or another repeatable measurement point.
  5. Only consider a custom RF front end after the requirements are validated. A custom design adds RF layout, tuning, and verification work; it is not a shortcut around system testing or certification.

4. Treat the antenna, enclosure, and power as one design

The radio’s performance depends on more than its transceiver. Antenna gain and efficiency, transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, enclosure materials, and nearby components all affect the link. Metal, batteries, displays, cables, and a person’s proximity can detune an antenna or change its range. Test the assembled device in the places and orientations that matter to its use.

More transmit power can be counterproductive. The Bluetooth Core radio specification warns that using high transmit power at short range can saturate the remote receiver and cause link failure. The same specification requires compensation when a directional antenna has gain greater than 0 dBi under applicable regulatory rules. For Bluetooth LE Power Control Request use, supported adjacent transmit-power levels should differ by no more than 8 dB. Apply these requirements to the relevant design and rules; they are not general settings to apply blindly to every radio.

5. Plan testing and certification for the finished product

Plan compliance work early, and test the configuration that will actually ship. Bluetooth radio requirements refer to applicable regional rules, including FCC Part 15 and European EN standards. The required evaluation depends on the target market and the final product’s antenna, transmit power, enclosure, clocking, spurious emissions, and operating modes. IEEE 802.15.4 compliance as a standard is not product certification.
