If you are already registered and your state is in an active Special Intensive Revision (SIR), submit the SIR enumeration form by the deadline in your state’s notice. If your name is missing from the draft roll, the claim route may instead be Form 6 with the prescribed declaration. For a new registration, overseas registration, objection or correction, the relevant forms are Form 6, Form 6A, Form 7 and Form 8. First check the current roll and your state’s latest Election Commission of India (ECI) instructions: SIR is phased, so deadlines and the stage of the process differ by state.

What SIR means for your electoral-roll entry

The Election Commission of India describes SIR as a revision intended to keep electoral rolls accurate while including every eligible elector. Its 2026 process includes house-to-house visits by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), distribution and collection of enumeration forms, an online submission route, publication of a draft roll, and a period for claims, objections, notices and verification before the final roll is published.

In its 31 May 2026 release for Phase III, the ECI stated its objective as: “No eligible citizen is left out while no ineligible person is included in the Electoral Roll.” The enumeration form is for existing electors covered by an active SIR phase; it is not a replacement for every other voter-registration form. If an existing elector misses the initial enumeration deadline, that ECI release says they may apply using Form 6 with the prescribed declaration during the claims-and-objections period. Follow the applicable state notice for the process and deadline.

Which form or service should you use?

Your situation Form or service What to know
You are already an elector covered by an active SIR phase SIR Enumeration Form Submit through the ECI’s SIR service or your BLO, following the state-specific instructions and deadline. The service may ask for details from an earlier SIR roll.
You need to register as a general elector Form 6 This is the ECI’s form for new registration. The ECI’s 31 May 2026 Phase III release also specifies Form 6 with a prescribed declaration for an existing elector who missed the enumeration deadline, submitted during the claims-and-objections period.
You are an overseas elector seeking registration Form 6A The ECI identifies this as the overseas voter registration form.
You want to object to an entry or request deletion of a name Form 7 Use the official form instructions. Form 7 is not the general-purpose correction form.
You need to report a shift, correct particulars, request a replacement EPIC, or seek PwD marking Form 8 The ECI groups these requests under Form 8. Check the current form instructions for the change you need.

The ECI’s general enrolment conditions are Indian citizenship, being at least 18 on the applicable qualifying date, ordinary residence in the relevant polling area, and no legal disqualification. A voter ID card (EPIC) or a history of voting does not by itself establish that your name is present on the current roll.

How to check your name and take the right next step

  1. Check the current electoral roll. Use the ECI Voters’ Services Portal and its current roll or SIR-2026 services. Search using the details the service requests; do not assume an old EPIC card or past vote confirms your current entry.
  2. Identify which stage applies in your state. If your state is in the enumeration phase, follow the SIR Enumeration Form instructions for covered existing electors. If a draft roll has been published, check that draft and note the claims-and-objections deadline.
  3. Choose the form for the specific issue. Use the table above to distinguish a new registration, overseas registration, objection or deletion request, and a correction or shift from SIR enumeration.
  4. Follow the state notice and official filing instructions. Keep to the deadline and submit through the stated ECI service or the responsible local election official, such as the BLO where applicable. For a missed SIR enumeration deadline, use the Form 6 route and prescribed declaration described in the relevant ECI notice.
  5. Check the final roll after claims and verification. A draft entry or pending application is not the same as confirmation in the final roll. Check the published final roll for your state.

Why SIR dates differ by state

The ECI’s published 2026 schedule divides states and Union Territories into groups rather than setting one nationwide deadline. For example, the schedule lists 5 July 2026 as the draft-roll date for Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim and Manipur, with claims and objections through 4 August. For Tripura, it lists draft publication on 21 October 2026, claims and objections from 21 October to 20 November, and final publication on 23 December. These are dates in the published schedule, not confirmation that no later amendment has been issued. Check the latest ECI or state Chief Electoral Officer notice for the state concerned before relying on a date.

What is contested about the revision?

SIR raises a practical tension: removing entries for people who have died, duplicate entries or other ineligible entries while making sure eligible electors are not omitted or blocked by a difficult process. The ECI says its purpose is an accurate roll that leaves no eligible citizen out.

Associated Press reporting from West Bengal on 23 April 2026 described voters who said they had voted previously but could not find their names, opposition allegations that the impact was disproportionate, and the ECI’s explanation that deletions concerned deceased, absent, duplicate or ineligible entries. Individual accounts and political allegations should not be treated as proof of a statewide pattern; the ECI explanation is the Commission’s stated rationale, not by itself a finding about every disputed case. The available material does not establish a single comparable all-India SIR count, so state- or phase-specific figures should not be generalized nationally.

A Government of India press release says the Supreme Court upheld the legality of Bihar’s SIR in a judgment dated 27 May 2026. That concerns the Bihar challenge; it does not, by itself, decide every question about later state-level implementation or establish the facts of individual deletion disputes. For the judgment’s precise holdings or directions, consult the judgment itself rather than relying only on the government’s summary.
