OpenAI DevDay 2026 brought more than 20 announcements spanning ChatGPT, Codex, models, APIs, plugins and collaboration. The practical picture is mixed: some features are available to eligible users, while others remain in beta, limited preview or planned rollout. Here is what OpenAI announced and where developers can investigate each area.
What was OpenAI DevDay 2026?
OpenAI held DevDay at Fort Mason in San Francisco on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The event was aimed at developers and hands-on technical builders, including engineers, technical founders, researchers and technical leaders. Its announced format included a keynote, technical sessions, demos and workshops. OpenAI’s DevDay page lists the event details and participation information; the scheduled in-person event has passed.
OpenAI’s September 29 recap says the event included more than 20 major announcements. Rather than one release, it was a set of changes across products and developer surfaces.
Agents and new ways of working
Dots: always-on agents
OpenAI describes Dots as always-on agents designed to handle ongoing work. At the time of the recap, Dots were available to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. An Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare beta required a workspace administrator to enable the feature. Availability therefore depends on plan, market and, for the beta, admin settings. ChatGPT collaboration features
The recap also announced ChatGPT Space, Pages and collaborative slides. These features are intended to support shared or structured work in ChatGPT, but their release and eligibility details differ. Consult the relevant entries in OpenAI’s official recap rather than assuming that all three are generally available or included on every plan.

Codex updates
Codex announcements included cloud execution, a refreshed command-line interface with voice and an /agents view, code review, and Codex Security Cloud. These announcements cover distinct capabilities; the recap’s availability statements should be checked feature by feature, especially for functionality described as future or limited preview.

GPT-6.1 Sol and Ultrafast
OpenAI characterized GPT-6.1 Sol as an upgrade focused on agentic coding, computer use and professional work. It said the model’s standard input and output token prices were one-fifth of Astra’s; that is OpenAI’s price comparison, not a guarantee of identical cost for every workload or configuration.
OpenAI separately described Ultrafast as a premium speed tier, reporting up to 8× faster token generation in Codex and up to 6× in the API. Those are OpenAI-reported maximums for the stated products, not a promise that every request will achieve those speeds. Eligibility and access depend on the applicable product and rollout.

API and deployment announcements
Decisions API
The Decisions API was announced in limited preview. It is designed to select among a finite set of answers defined by the developer—for example, to classify an input, route a request or choose an agent’s next action. Its bounded-choice design makes it different from a general-purpose open-ended response.
Agents API computer use
The Agents API announcement adds computer use. Developers evaluating it should distinguish this capability from the Decisions API: computer use concerns an agent interacting with a computer, while Decisions API handles a developer-defined choice among possible outcomes.

Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents
OpenAI and Amazon announced Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, which are intended to run OpenAI agents in AWS and integrate with AWS resources. For developers building on AWS, this is a deployment and integration path to investigate through Amazon Bedrock; the event announcement does not establish that every AWS account, region or workload has access.

OpenAI announced changes to plugin extensions, plugin creation and submission, discovery, and Sites that host supported plugins. It also announced MCP events for plugin automations. Together, these changes concern how developers create, distribute and connect extensions in ChatGPT, but the recap assigns different availability and rollout statuses to individual features. Check the feature-level status in the recap before planning around a launch date or assuming general access.

How to assess what you can use
For developers deciding what to try first, match each announcement to its surface and status rather than treating the event as one release:
- ChatGPT users and teams: Check plan and market eligibility for Dots, and verify the separate rollout details for Space, Pages, slides and plugin features.
- Codex users: Look for cloud execution, CLI changes, voice, the
/agentsview, code review and Security Cloud; distinguish released capabilities from future or limited-preview items. - API developers: Consider the Decisions API for bounded classification or routing, the Agents API for computer use, and the stated model and speed options.
- AWS teams: Investigate Bedrock Managed Agents as an announced OpenAI-on-AWS integration and confirm applicable AWS availability before designing a deployment around it.
- For consequential work: Retain human review where needed; OpenAI specifically warns that Dots can make mistakes.
