At 96 open-and-close cycles a day, Samsung’s 200,000-fold benchmark works out to about 5.7 years. That is a calculation based on a general Samsung folding-test benchmark—not a Fold5-specific lifespan test or a guarantee that every phone will last that long.
How the 5.7-year estimate is calculated
Samsung describes a folding test intended to assess whether the Galaxy Fold can withstand 200,000 folds and unfolds, which it equates to about five years at 100 folds a day. Applying that same benchmark to 96 cycles per day:

Here, one cycle means opening the phone and then closing it. If you count opening and closing as two separate hinge movements, that is 400,000 movements, but Samsung’s benchmark is expressed in fold-and-unfold cycles. Samsung’s test description is at Samsung Mobile Press.
What this benchmark does—and does not—say
The 200,000-fold figure comes from Samsung Mobile Press’s 2019 description of a Galaxy Fold folding test. It provides a benchmark for estimating how long that many cycles might take at your usage rate, but it is not presented there as a Galaxy Z Fold5-specific test, warranty, or service-life promise. A real phone’s lifespan can also be affected by handling, damage, and other conditions; the calculation cannot predict when an individual hinge will need repair.

Frequent folding is not the same as battery wear
Opening and closing the phone 96 times a day is primarily a question about mechanical use of the hinge. It does not, by itself, determine how long the battery lasts between charges or how long the battery remains useful. Battery endurance depends on factors such as screen-on time, apps, radios, temperature, charging behavior, and network conditions.
Samsung lists the Fold5 battery at 4,400 mAh typical capacity and 4,270 mAh rated capacity. Its published maximum-use estimates are up to 17 hours of LTE internet use, up to 18 hours of Wi-Fi internet use, and up to 21 hours of wireless video playback. These are estimates, not a promise of a particular number of hours for every owner; Samsung says actual battery life varies with network environment, usage patterns, number of charges, and other factors. Battery autonomy is evaluated separately from hinge-cycle counts. For example, DXOMARK’s August 30, 2023 laboratory assessment covered autonomy, charging, and efficiency; those results address battery performance rather than the number of folds the hinge can withstand. For the phone’s actual lifespan: treat that as a benchmark-based estimate, not a guaranteed Fold5 service life.

For battery expectations: look at your screen use and charging habits, not just how often you fold the phone.
