Oracle’s JavaScript support lets MySQL run JavaScript stored functions and procedures inside the database server, where SQL can call them. The feature was introduced as a Preview in MySQL Enterprise Edition in December 2023; Oracle also made MySQL-JavaScript available in HeatWave on OCI, AWS, and Azure. In Oracle’s current MySQL 9.7 manual, the feature requires the Multilingual Engine (MLE) component and conforms to ECMAScript 2024.
What JavaScript support in MySQL means
This is server-side stored-program support, not a way to run JavaScript in a browser or automatically replace an application’s JavaScript runtime. You define a function or procedure using SQL, specify LANGUAGE JAVASCRIPT, and place the JavaScript source between dollar-quoted delimiters. A function can be used in a SQL expression; a procedure can be invoked with CALL. Supported SQL and JavaScript values are converted implicitly in documented cases. Oracle’s MySQL 9.7 JavaScript stored-program guide includes a simple add_nos function example.
The implementation has evolved: Oracle’s December 2023 Preview announcement described ECMAScript 2021, while the current 9.7 manual documents ECMAScript 2024 and says JavaScript runs in strict mode by default. Treat the manual for the specific MySQL version and deployment you use as authoritative rather than assuming the launch-era description still applies. Oracle’s December 2023 announcement
Where it is available and what it requires
Oracle’s launch material tied the capability to MySQL Enterprise Edition and MySQL HeatWave, including HeatWave deployments on OCI, AWS, and Azure. The current manual states that JavaScript routines require the MLE component. Edition, service, component, and version availability should be confirmed for the exact deployment; the launch announcement alone does not establish availability in every MySQL distribution or environment.

How a JavaScript stored program is used
A JavaScript routine is declared as a MySQL stored program; its source is not sent to a separate Node.js service by this syntax. The routine’s SQL declaration identifies the language, and SQL callers use the resulting database routine.
- Create the routine: Use the stored-program SQL syntax, declare the function or procedure, specify
LANGUAGE JAVASCRIPT, and enclose its source using the documented dollar-quoted delimiters. Check the MySQL manual for the exact declaration and supported argument and return types for your version. - Call it from SQL: Use a function where a SQL expression is accepted, or invoke a procedure with
CALL. The manual documents conversion between SQL and JavaScript values for supported cases. - Check access and runtime needs: Ensure the MLE component is available and configured for the deployment, and grant routine creation or execution only to the appropriate accounts.
When running JavaScript inside MySQL is useful
The clearest fit is logic that benefits from operating close to stored data, particularly when fetching rows into an application just to parse, validate, transform, or format them would create avoidable data movement. Oracle’s examples of possible uses include:

Moving suitable computation to the database can reduce transfers to application servers and may reduce application memory use, latency, or cloud egress. Those are potential architectural benefits, not guaranteed performance results: Oracle’s cited material provides no benchmark proving JavaScript routines are faster than SQL or application-tier code in a particular workload.
How it differs from SQL routines and application JavaScript
| Choice | Where logic runs and data movement | Language and dependencies | Deployment and security considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| JavaScript stored program | Inside MySQL; can process data near storage and avoid sending some data to an application first. | JavaScript under the MySQL MLE implementation; supported types and APIs are documented by Oracle. | Requires MLE and an eligible product or service context; runs within MySQL’s privilege and runtime-isolation boundaries. |
| Traditional SQL stored routine | Inside MySQL; SQL can express database operations close to stored data. | SQL routine language rather than JavaScript; suitability depends on the operation. | Uses MySQL’s stored-program mechanisms. A complete feature-by-feature comparison is not established in the cited sources. |
| Application-tier JavaScript | Runs outside MySQL, typically in an application environment; data needed by the logic may have to cross the database boundary. | Uses the application’s JavaScript runtime and its available packages and APIs. | Requires application deployment and database connectivity; Oracle’s cited material does not provide a comparative cost or benchmark. |
The decision is not simply “JavaScript versus SQL.” Keep logic in SQL when it is naturally expressed as database operations; consider a JavaScript routine when its parsing, validation, or transformation logic is materially easier to implement there and when the deployment supports MLE. Keep logic in the application when it needs capabilities unavailable to the isolated database runtime or belongs to application-specific behavior.

Security boundaries and permissions
Oracle describes the JavaScript integration as using GraalVM, with a separate execution context for each program. JavaScript stored programs cannot access the filesystem or network communication and cannot freely spawn or manipulate threads. These restrictions reduce the runtime’s access to host resources; they do not make every routine safe by default or replace careful authorization and review. Oracle’s explanation of JavaScript stored-program isolation
MySQL privileges govern who can create routines and who can execute them. Oracle says creation is limited to privileged users, while execution can be granted to other users. Apply least privilege: restrict routine creation, review routines as database code, and grant execution only to accounts that need it.
