The Innovative Integration X5-TX is an XMC I/O module built for high-speed waveform generation in a PCI Express host. Its headline modes are four 16-bit DAC outputs at 500 MSPS each, or two outputs at a true 1 GSPS. It also combines a Virtex-5 FPGA, onboard memory, an eight-lane PCIe host interface, and private RocketIO links. Because it is an XMC module rather than a desktop PCIe card, a compatible XMC-to-PCIe carrier is generally needed for desktop installation.

What the X5-TX does

The X5-TX is designed to generate high-speed analog waveforms while providing FPGA-based processing and host connectivity. The manufacturer’s 2009/2013 datasheet describes applications including arbitrary waveform generation, wireless MIMO transmitters, radar waveforms, electronic warfare, and IP development. EE Times’ dated launch report also discusses radar and direct-RF or wireless signal generation.

The module is an XMC board measuring 75 × 150 mm and identified as PCI Express VITA 42.3 in the manufacturer datasheet. Its listed host interface is PCI Express x8. That interface connects the module to a host; the separate RocketIO links are private high-speed connections for system integration.

DAC channels and sample rates

The X5-TX supports two principal output configurations. The datasheet specifies 16-bit DAC outputs and states that the two-channel 1 GSPS mode is a true 1 GSPS rate without interpolation.

The datasheet also lists frequency up-conversion with complex or real outputs, 2× or 4× interpolation, coarse mixing, DC or AC coupling, and external or internal sample clocking and triggering. These options affect how signals are generated and synchronized; the available material does not specify a single required configuration for every application.

FPGA, memory, and data links

The datasheet identifies a Xilinx Virtex-5 SX95T or LX155T FPGA, 512 MB of DDR2 DRAM, 4 MB of QDR-II SRAM, eight 2.5-Gbps RocketIO private links, and a PCIe x8 host interface. It says the FPGA and memory architecture supports real-time signal processing at rates exceeding 300 GMAC/s. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent benchmark results.

A separate manufacturer family product guide lists the X5-TX with a Virtex-5 SX95T, 512 MB DRAM, 8 MB SRAM, and a 1.3 GB/s PCIe transfer figure. Its memory-controller entry describes arbitrary and complex pattern playback at full 1 GHz rates. Since the two manufacturer documents give different SRAM capacities, the 4 MB figure belongs to the cited datasheet configuration and the 8 MB figure to the product-guide entry; neither should be treated as a universal capacity without confirming the exact board revision or configuration.

EE Times’ launch report describes more than 1 GB/s sustained host transfer capability for the X5-series architecture and private serial links exceeding 1.6 GB/s. Those are historical product-report claims for that generation, not current measured performance guarantees. The product guide’s 1.3 GB/s PCIe figure is likewise a published family-guide figure rather than a guarantee for every host or workload.

Software and development workflow

The documented software stack is aimed at both host-driven waveform playback and FPGA-based signal processing:

  • FrameWork Logic: MATLAB and VHDL tools for customizing FPGA logic. EE Times says the X5-series could be customized with VHDL and MATLAB through this toolset.
  • MATLAB board-support package: Intended for real-time hardware-in-the-loop development with Simulink and Xilinx System Generator.
  • C++ host libraries and tools: For host-side control and application development.
  • Windows and Linux drivers: The datasheet lists drivers for both operating systems.

Documented example workflows include streaming DAC samples from disk and generating communications symbols in real time. The sources establish that these software components were documented for the product, but do not establish current operating-system versions, present-day support status, or compatibility with a particular modern development environment.

Installing the XMC module in a desktop PCIe system

An XMC module is not a conventional desktop plug-in PCIe card. The cited XMC-to-PCIe carrier adapter is described as adapting PCI Express VITA 42.3 XMC modules to a desktop PCIe slot and supporting Innovative Integration XMC I/O modules. Before choosing a carrier or host, verify the complete system rather than assuming that a physical fit guarantees electrical or software compatibility.

  1. Confirm the interface match. Check that the carrier supports the X5-TX’s PCI Express VITA 42.3 interface and x8 host-lane requirement, and that the host slot and carrier routing provide the required lanes.
  2. Check board and chassis clearance. Confirm that the carrier, XMC module, and any required cooling hardware fit the desktop chassis without obstructing adjacent slots or airflow.
  3. Verify power and cooling. Check the carrier and host’s power delivery against the board requirements, and plan adequate airflow for the FPGA and DAC workload. The cited material does not provide a current host compatibility matrix or a universal thermal specification.
  4. Confirm software support before deployment. Establish that the required driver and development tools support the intended host operating system and application environment; the historical software list alone does not confirm present compatibility.

The adapter source establishes the intended carrier use, not a guarantee that every x8 desktop slot, carrier revision, chassis, or driver combination will work.

Who the X5-TX is designed for

The listed applications point to engineering teams that need programmable, high-speed signal generation rather than a general-purpose consumer audio or display output. Typical fit includes arbitrary waveform generation, communications and wireless transmitter development, radar or electronic-warfare waveform work, SDR-related development, and custom FPGA IP prototyping. The combination of multiple DAC channels, onboard memory, and FPGA resources is relevant where a design needs local playback or real-time processing; suitability still depends on the exact signal, clocking, output, host, and software requirements.

Availability and what to verify

The cited manufacturer documents and EE Times report describe the product and its published capabilities, but they do not establish current manufacturing status, support lifecycle, price, or stock. Anyone evaluating an X5-TX should confirm the exact board revision, memory configuration, included software and driver support, and availability directly with a vendor or seller before building a system around it.
