Nginx and Apache both let you accept connections, choose a site by hostname, and forward requests to an application—but they express those jobs differently. In Nginx, a listen directive sits inside a server block; Apache uses global Listen directives to open endpoints and separate <VirtualHost> blocks to configure sites. In either server, hostname matching happens only after a request reaches the relevant address and port. This guide compares the configuration patterns and shows how to diagnose a request that lands on the wrong site.
Examples below are starting points, not tested configurations. Directive defaults and behavior can vary by version, so check the documentation for the version installed on your server.
How do I change the port Nginx listens on?
Put listen inside the Nginx HTTP server block that should accept the connection. For example, listen 8080; configures that server block for port 8080. The Nginx documentation says that when listen is omitted, the default depends on privileges: *:80 when Nginx runs with superuser privileges and *:8000 otherwise. Check the documentation for your installed Nginx version rather than relying on an assumed default.
Apache separates listening from site configuration. A global Listen 80 directive opens port 80 across interfaces; specifying an address as well can bind the listener to a particular interface. A <VirtualHost> block does not open a port by itself. See the Nginx listen directive documentation and Apache binding documentation.

How do I set up virtual hosts in Nginx or Apache?
Both servers can serve multiple sites on the same address and port by matching the requested hostname, but the configuration boundaries differ. Nginx groups server blocks by listener; Apache first selects an address-and-port group, then checks the host names configured within it.
| Task | Nginx | Apache HTTP Server |
|---|---|---|
| Open an address and port | listen inside an HTTP server block. |
Global Listen directive; can specify an address to bind a particular interface. |
| Define a site | server { ... }, typically with listen and server_name. |
<VirtualHost address:port> with ServerName, optional ServerAlias, and site settings such as DocumentRoot. |
| Choose a fallback site | Explicit default_server, or otherwise the first server block for that address and port. |
First name-based virtual host for the selected address and port when no configured name matches. |
Nginx: match names within a listener
A Nginx server block describes a virtual server. Set the accepted endpoint with listen and the hostnames with server_name. Nginx does not sharply separate IP-based and name-based virtual servers. For a given address and port, it uses the configured names to select a server block. If none matches, the first block for that endpoint is the default unless one is explicitly marked with default_server.

Apache: open the endpoint, then define sites
Apache’s Listen directive opens the endpoint; each <VirtualHost> scopes per-site settings. Add ServerName and, where appropriate, ServerAlias to identify names served by that site. Apache documents the first name-based virtual host for a selected address and port as the default for requests with no matching name.
Listen 80
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot "/var/www/example"
</VirtualHost>
For Nginx, a minimal name-based site pattern is:
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
root /var/www/example;
}
These declarations configure the web server; they do not create public DNS records. The requested hostname must resolve to the server’s address independently. To test before public DNS is set up, you can map the name to the intended address in a local hosts file. See Apache’s virtual-host examples and Nginx listen documentation.

How do I configure Apache as a reverse proxy?
Apache can act as a reverse proxy, forwarding requests to another server. Enable the required proxy modules for your installation, then map the public path to the backend inside the appropriate virtual host. A common mapping is:
ProxyPass "/" "http://127.0.0.1:8000/"
ProxyPassReverse "/" "http://127.0.0.1:8000/"
ProxyPass routes requests to the backend. ProxyPassReverse adjusts backend redirect headers so redirects can point back through the public proxy rather than exposing the backend address. Confirm that the modules are available and that the application handles forwarded host and scheme information as your deployment requires.

Nginx uses a location block with proxy_pass. This example forwards requests to a backend and passes the original host and client IP in headers:
http {
upstream app_backend {
server 127.0.0.1:8000;
}
server {
listen 80 default_server;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
location / {
proxy_pass http://app_backend;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
}
}
}
An Nginx upstream group can contain backend servers; when no balancing method is specified, the documented default is round-robin. That option concerns backend distribution, not hostname selection. See the Nginx proxy module, Nginx upstream module, and Apache reverse proxy guide.

Trailing slashes change Nginx path mapping
In Nginx, whether proxy_pass includes a URI changes how the request path is sent upstream. When it includes a URI, Nginx replaces the normalized portion of the request URI that matched the location. Without a URI, the request URI is passed differently. For instance, with location /api/, a proxy target of http://backend/ includes a URI and replaces the matched /api/ prefix; a target of http://backend has no URI and does not apply that replacement. Check the exact mapping against the backend route you intend to reach.
Apache’s ProxyPass mappings also pair a public path with a backend path. Keep the trailing-slash choices consistent and test a representative request: the public prefix and backend prefix determine the resulting path. For either server, verify both the path the application receives and any redirect it returns. The relevant rules are documented in the Nginx proxy module reference and Apache mod_proxy reference.
Why is my request going to the default virtual host?
A default site is selected when the request reaches an address and port but its hostname does not match a configured site—or, depending on the request and configuration, no hostname is available. Debug in order: first confirm the connection reaches the intended server and endpoint, then check name matching and fallback order.
- Check name resolution. Confirm the hostname resolves to the intended server address. A virtual-host declaration does not publish DNS records; use a local hosts-file mapping to test if needed.
- Check the listener and network path. Verify that the server process is listening on the requested address and port, and that the operating-system firewall or cloud network policy permits the connection.
- Confirm the request reaches the expected server and port. Resolve connection and routing issues before debugging virtual-host selection.
- Inspect host matching and fallback order. Check the requested hostname against Nginx
server_nameor ApacheServerNameandServerAlias. In Apache on Unix-like systems, runapachectl -S; on Windows, usehttpd.exe -Sto display the parsed virtual-host configuration. For Nginx, inspect the active server blocks and which block is first or markeddefault_serverfor that listener. - Check proxy path mapping. Compare the incoming URI with the backend path produced by Nginx
locationandproxy_pass, or ApacheProxyPass. Also inspect redirects from the backend. - Test backend reachability and redirects. Verify the proxy host can reach the backend and that the application knows its externally visible host and scheme when it generates absolute redirects.
- Verify version-specific settings. Consult documentation for the installed version. For example, the Nginx proxy module reference records that the default for
proxy_http_versionchanged in version 1.29.7.
Which server should you choose for these tasks?
Choose based on the configuration model your team understands, the modules and application integrations you need, how you want to manage host fallbacks and proxy mappings, and the server’s fit with the deployment environment. Nginx expresses endpoint listening within server blocks; Apache separates global listeners from per-site virtual-host containers. Both can route reverse-proxy traffic, but their path-mapping and redirect directives differ, so configuration familiarity and maintenance matter.
