1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo configure NGINX as a reverse proxy, set a public-facing listen port in a server block, then use proxy_pass in a location to send requests to the backend’s address and port. Those ports serve different roles: listen 80 accepts client connections, while 127.0.0.1:8080 in an upstream definition identifies where NGINX connects to the application.
How NGINX routes a reverse-proxy request
NGINX accepts a connection on an address and port configured by listen, selects a server block, and then evaluates the request path against that server’s location blocks. A location containing proxy_pass forwards the request to another server and relays the response. NGINX describes this as receiving requests, passing them to proxied servers, retrieving responses, and sending them to clients in its Beginner’s Guide.
The client-facing port and backend port do not need to match. For example, clients can connect to NGINX on port 80 while NGINX connects to an application on port 8080. The backend address must be reachable from the NGINX host or container; a service listening only on a different network interface may not be reachable through 127.0.0.1.

This is an illustrative synthesis of NGINX documentation, not a tested or complete deployment configuration. Put the upstream and server blocks inside the appropriate http context in your NGINX configuration. The module reference describes proxy_pass as passing requests to another server: ngx_http_proxy_module.
What the port and routing directives do
| Directive or setting | Role | Example |
|---|---|---|
listen |
Local address and port on which the server accepts connections. | listen 80; |
server_name |
Names used to select a virtual server among servers matching the connection’s listen address and port. | server_name example.com; |
upstream |
A named group of backend servers that can be referenced by proxy_pass. |
upstream app_backend { server 127.0.0.1:8080; } |
proxy_pass |
Backend destination for requests matched by the location; may specify a domain or IP, optional port, or UNIX-domain socket, and may use HTTP or HTTPS. | proxy_pass http://app_backend; |
The NGINX core reference documents port 80 as the default when a listen address is supplied without a port; if listen is absent, the default depends on whether NGINX runs with superuser privileges. Set listen explicitly rather than relying on that context-dependent behavior. See ngx_http_core_module.

Choose a direct backend or an upstream group
Use a direct address for a single destination
For one backend, a location can point directly to its address, such as proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;. This keeps a small configuration straightforward. The address and port after the scheme are the destination NGINX connects to, not the port clients use to reach NGINX.
Use a named upstream for a backend group
A named upstream block gives a group a reusable name, which can make configurations easier to read and allows multiple backend servers to be listed. NGINX documents round-robin distribution when no other HTTP load-balancing method is configured. The behavior is described in Using nginx as HTTP load balancer. A group is useful for multiple destinations or reuse; it is not required just to proxy to one backend.

Understand the URI in proxy_pass
A trailing slash can change routing if it forms part of a URI in proxy_pass. NGINX distinguishes a proxy destination containing a URI from one that does not: when a URI is specified, the portion of the normalized request URI that matched the location is replaced with that URI. Without a URI component, NGINX follows its documented original or normalized request-URI handling rules. Check the exact mapping you intend rather than treating the slash as cosmetic; the rules are in the proxy module reference.
For example, before adding a URI to proxy_pass, decide whether a request such as /api/items should reach the backend as /api/items or with the matched location prefix replaced. Test representative paths, including a nested path, against the intended mapping.

Set the headers your backend expects
For HTTP/1.0 and HTTP/1.1, NGINX’s proxy module documents that the original Host and Connection fields are not passed through as-is by default. Use proxy_set_header where the backend needs particular values. The example sets Host to $host and passes the client address in X-Real-IP; confirm which headers your application uses before adding or changing them. The available directive behavior and variables are documented in ngx_http_proxy_module.
How NGINX selects a server block
NGINX first compares the request’s destination IP address and port with configured listen directives. Among servers matching that connection, it uses the request’s Host header and configured server names. If no name matches, NGINX uses the default server for that port. The default-server behavior and selection sequence are explained in How nginx processes a request.

If a request reaches the wrong site or the default page, check the listen address and port first, then verify the hostname sent by the client and the relevant server_name. A correct backend port cannot fix a request that selected the wrong server block.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common reverse-proxy problems
- NGINX cannot connect to the backend: verify the backend host, port, or socket in
proxy_passor the upstream server entry, and confirm that destination is reachable from the NGINX process. - Requests arrive at the wrong virtual host: compare the connection’s IP and port with
listen, then check the Host value andserver_name; unmatched names use that port’s default server. - The application receives an unexpected path: inspect whether
proxy_passincludes a URI and compare the resulting mapping with the location prefix. - The application sees unexpected host or client details: review the backend’s expected headers and the corresponding
proxy_set_headerdirectives. - The public and backend ports were confused: treat
listenas the local incoming port and the address inproxy_passas the upstream destination.
