Browser checks improve feedback but can be bypassed, so they are never a substitute for server-side validation.
Why a lead form needs validation in both places
Client-side validation runs in the visitor’s browser. It can flag a missing required field or a malformed email address before a request is sent. Server-side validation runs in the application receiving the request; it must decide whether the submitted values are acceptable before the application acts on them.
Browser rules are not a security boundary. A visitor can disable JavaScript, alter the page or send a crafted HTTP request that does not use the form at all. MDN documents these bypasses in its Constraint Validation API guide. OWASP therefore advises validating on the server before processing, while using client-side checks for their usability benefits in its Input Validation Cheat Sheet.
Decide what each field is allowed to contain
Define acceptance rules field by field. A useful rule checks both syntax—the value’s type or shape—and semantics—whether it makes sense for the operation. For example, a lead form might require a valid email shape and a service selection that is actually offered. The service rule is specific to the business; it is not a universal requirement for all forms.

Prefer defining acceptable input to trying to list every suspicious string. Overly narrow rules can reject genuine people: names and comments may need broad Unicode support and legitimate punctuation. Telephone numbers commonly include separators, and postal codes are not numeric in every country. OWASP and the W3C WAI forms validation tutorial both caution against assumptions that exclude legitimate input.
- Choose formats that match the countries and users the form supports.
- Set length limits appropriate to the field and application.
- For structured values, use a maintained validator or schema where suitable rather than an improvised, restrictive regular expression.
- Bound input length before applying regular expressions or parsing large or nested payloads.
Build helpful browser-side checks
Start with semantic HTML controls and native constraints. Use an appropriate input type, mark genuinely required controls with required, and add relevant length or range limits. Browsers can provide basic validation without JavaScript, as described by MDN and WAI.

Use custom browser logic only when native constraints do not express the rule—for example, when two fields must agree. The Constraint Validation API includes setCustomValidity() for setting a custom error; pass an empty string to clear it once the value is valid. Keep the same acceptance rule on the server: client logic can be changed or skipped.
Enforce the rules on the server before processing
- Apply request and size limits. Reject payloads that exceed limits before expensive parsing, especially when input may be large or nested.
- Parse safely. Treat every submitted value as untrusted, regardless of what the browser displayed or checked.
- Validate fields and relationships. Check requiredness, type, format, length and relevant cross-field or business rules against the server’s own accepted criteria.
- Stop on invalid data. Do not continue with partially validated values. Return a clear response that identifies what needs correction.
- Use separate security controls where needed. Validation does not replace parameterized database queries, context-aware output encoding or authorization checks.
A valid-looking email address does not prove that the mailbox exists or that the person submitting it owns it. If the workflow needs that assurance, it requires a separate verification step; format validation alone cannot establish identity or ownership.

Return errors people can act on
When the server rejects a submission, explain the problem in text and, where possible, describe a safe correction. Preserve safe submitted values so the person does not have to re-enter the whole form. If several fields are invalid, an error summary with links to the affected controls is one documented approach in W3C’s WCAG 2.2 G139 technique. The technique is an example of one way to meet WCAG, not itself a normative requirement.
Do not make color the only way an error is communicated. Pair visual cues with text, and ensure the error summary and field-level messages identify the problem clearly. WAI’s validation tutorial discusses required fields, input types and error feedback; G139 describes a navigable summary pattern.

Choose the right feedback pattern for the form

These are implementation options rather than a single interface prescribed for every form. Whatever pattern you choose, the server remains responsible for accepting or rejecting the request.
