RTS Hypervisor V2.2 was a 2010 release of Real-Time Systems’ bare-metal hypervisor for running real-time and general-purpose operating systems on the same hardware. Its headline change was Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) support across guest operating systems, including guests that did not support MSI natively. That was intended to reduce conflicts associated with shared interrupts; it does not mean every operating system or device is compatible with every RTS Hypervisor release.
What RTS Hypervisor V2.2 is
RTS Hypervisor is a Type 1, or bare-metal, hypervisor: it runs beneath the guest operating systems rather than as an application inside a host OS. Real-Time Systems describes the product as a way to run multiple real-time and general-purpose operating systems on one multicore or multiprocessor platform. Its design partitions hardware resources—including processor cores, memory and I/O—so different operating systems can run concurrently. Real-Time Systems product page
This arrangement is aimed at systems that need a real-time workload alongside a broader-purpose operating system, rather than at ordinary desktop virtualization. The product documentation emphasizes a privileged mode intended to preserve real-time behavior. It also describes shared memory and virtual TCP/IP networking as ways for the operating systems to communicate. These capabilities do not, by themselves, establish a particular latency or performance level; the cited release and product materials provide no independent benchmark figures.
What MSI support changed in V2.2
Message Signaled Interrupts communicate an interrupt by writing a message rather than relying on a physical interrupt line shared among devices. Shared lines can create conflicts in systems where devices and operating systems need to handle interrupts predictably. The 2010 V2.2 announcement said the hypervisor added MSI support for all operating systems, including those without native MSI support. In practical terms, the hypervisor could provide MSI support to those guests, helping address the shared-interrupt problem. EE Times report on the V2.2 announcement

The wording matters: “all operating systems” describes the release’s MSI capability as announced, not universal guest compatibility. It is not a promise that every OS version, device, firmware setup or hardware platform will work together. Nor should V2.2’s feature list be assumed to describe later releases exactly.
Can it run Windows and a real-time OS together?
That is the product’s central use case: running general-purpose and real-time operating systems concurrently on one platform. The vendor FAQ lists Windows and real-time options such as QNX and VxWorks among supported operating systems, alongside Linux and other systems. Actual combinations depend on the hypervisor release, hardware, guest versions, and required device and I/O configuration. Real-Time Systems FAQ

A related 2010 announcement described cooperation between QNX Software Systems and Real-Time Systems to run QNX Neutrino with Windows, Linux and other operating systems on the same hardware. That supports the general use case, but is not a compatibility guarantee for a present-day QNX or Windows version. QNX and Real-Time Systems announcement
Operating-system support depends on release and version
The vendor FAQ names Windows, Linux, QNX, VxWorks, XENOMAI, RTOS-32, T-Kernel and other operating systems. A separate current compatibility listing assigns support status to specific Linux distributions and versions. The listing calls Ubuntu 24 LTS, Ubuntu 22 LTS, Debian 12 and Debian 11 “Featured”; Ubuntu 20/18 and Debian 10/9 “Maintained”; and CentOS 7/8 “Discontinued.” These labels apply to the listed distributions, not to every guest OS or to V2.2 specifically. Hardware, firmware and deployment considerations
The FAQ says RTS Hypervisor runs on modern x86 PCs and supports standard BIOS- or EFI-based firmware when the operating systems in question run normally on the PC. Its bootloader starts after firmware initialization, initializes hardware and launches the operating systems in a selected sequence. Hardware isolation features may also matter: the FAQ notes that IOMMU may be required for device-level memory protection and OS relocation, while Cache Allocation Technology is required for last-level-cache allocation. Requirements vary with the intended configuration. Real-Time Systems FAQ
For a current Windows virtualized-mode flow, Intel’s ECI documentation describes installing the RTS Hypervisor software package with Setup.exe. It says Setup.exe replaces MSI installers used in previous releases; MSI/MSM files require contacting Real-Time Systems support. Here, “MSI” in the installer context means Microsoft Installer packages, not Message Signaled Interrupts. Intel ECI installation documentation

Is V2.2 still current?
No: V2.2 is a historical release announced in 2010, not a safe proxy for current feature or compatibility status. Later R5.5.00 release notes document Windows 11 support and MSI with multiple messages in all execution modes—evidence that the product continued to evolve beyond the original V2.2 change. Those later notes do not establish that every current configuration is supported, so use documentation for the specific release under consideration. RTS Hypervisor R5.5.00 release notes
