Realms is better for a small group that wants simple, managed, always-on hosting; a dedicated server is better when you want more configuration control and can handle hosting and upkeep. First match the game edition: Java and Bedrock use separate ordinary Realms and server options, so they are not a standard way to play together across editions.

Can Java and Bedrock players join the same Realm or server?

Not through the ordinary options covered here. Java Realms and Java servers are for Java players; Bedrock Realms and Bedrock Dedicated Server are for Bedrock players. Bedrock supports cross-play across supported devices within Bedrock, while Java supports cross-play across Windows, Linux, and macOS. Check the official Java or Bedrock Edition guide and the Realms page for edition details.

If your group includes both editions, settle that compatibility question before choosing a host. The standard Realms and official dedicated-server routes do not bridge Java and Bedrock.

What is the practical difference?

Factor Realms Dedicated server
Setup and upkeep Managed through Minecraft and designed for easy setup. You install or rent server software, configure it, and manage availability and connections.
Access when owner is offline Always-on service; invited players can enter the active world while the owner is offline. Depends on the host computer or hosting provider being available.
Control Private invited world, plan features, and world-slot management. More direct configuration control; available controls depend on the software and hosting arrangement.
Player capacity Owner plus two or owner plus ten players simultaneously, depending on the plan. Depends on hardware or hosting and workload; no universal capacity figure is established here.
Backups and world handling Official plans include free backups; worlds can be downloaded for 18 months after subscription expiry, according to Minecraft’s page checked October 3, 2026. The operator chooses and manages backups; provider terms vary.
Software and costs Subscription; listed US prices are below. Official server software is free. Self-hosting may involve hardware, electricity, and connectivity costs; rented hosting has provider-specific charges.

Which Realms plan fits?

Minecraft’s official live plan page listed the following USD monthly prices when checked on October 3, 2026. Storefront, tax, and regional pricing may differ, and the page does not state a publication date for its live plan table.

The official page lists three persistent world slots, but only the active world is playable at a time. Invited friends play for free, and the invite list can be larger than the number who can join simultaneously. Minecraft describes the service this way: “Your Realm has three persistent world slots. Your invited friends can play your active world from any device, at any time, for free – even when you’re not online.” That is product-page wording, not an independent reliability measurement. Confirm terms and regional pricing on the official Realms page before subscribing.

When should you choose Realms?

  • Choose Realms if a family or friend group wants a private, persistent world without maintaining a server computer or configuring networking.
  • Choose it when invited players need to join while the owner is offline.
  • Check the simultaneous-player ceiling against the number of people who need to play at once; the invitation list itself may be larger.

When should you choose a dedicated server?

  • Choose a dedicated server if you want more direct control over configuration and have someone willing to maintain the software, host, and connection settings.
  • It can avoid a Realms subscription: Java multiplayer servers do not require Realms, and Mojang provides free official Java and Bedrock server software.
  • Choose this route if you need an approach beyond Realms’ listed simultaneous player limits, but remember capacity depends on the selected hardware or hosting and the workload.

Free software does not mean cost-free operation. A self-hosted server uses a capable computer and may add electricity and connectivity costs. Renting a host introduces provider-specific charges. The available evidence does not establish a universal cost comparison.

What does running a dedicated server involve?

Java server

Java server setup involves a server JAR and a compatible Java Runtime Environment. The official Minecraft server download page provides the software and setup information. If people connect from outside your local network, firewall or network configuration may be needed. Minecraft Help explains that Java servers can be used without a Realms subscription in its Java online server guidance.

Bedrock server

Mojang offers an official, free Bedrock Dedicated Server intended for Bedrock multiplayer. Its download page documents supported Windows and Ubuntu/Linux configurations and requirements, which you should check before installing. Microsoft Learn explains file-based settings and how to copy an existing world folder into the server’s worlds directory in its Bedrock Dedicated Server getting-started guide.

Self-hosting or renting infrastructure

Self-hosting means the computer and network are yours to operate; rented hosting means a provider supplies infrastructure under its own terms. A cloud virtual machine is another Java option: AWS’s December 7, 2023 tutorial demonstrates a Java server on EC2. It is one implementation example, not evidence that cloud hosting is cheaper, easier, or better for every group. No single hardware specification or capacity can be recommended without knowing the server workload.

How to decide

  1. Match editions. Establish whether everyone will play Java or everyone will play Bedrock; the standard options are edition-specific.
  2. Count concurrent players. Compare the number who need to play at once with the Realms plan limits, not just the size of the invite list.
  3. Choose your maintenance level. Pick Realms for managed hosting, or a dedicated server if someone can install, configure, and maintain it.
  4. Decide where it will run. For a dedicated server, choose a capable computer you operate or a hosting provider whose support, backup terms, and pricing fit your needs.
  5. Check the current terms. Verify plan pricing, server requirements, and regional availability on the relevant official pages before committing.
