iTest is a free, open-source computerised examination system for running tests on computers. It pairs iTestServer, which manages questions and exams, with iTestClient, which students use to take them. Exams can run over a network or, using exported test files, offline on individual computers.
What is iTest computerised examination software?
The iTest project describes the software as “a Qt application consisting of a Server and a Client designed for easy computerised examination.” It is written in C++ and distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPL v2), according to the project About page. The project homepage lists Mac OS X, Linux/Unix, and Microsoft Windows support.
Unlike a browser-based hosted exam service, iTest is a locally installed server-and-client application. The operator prepares and serves tests on the server; students use client computers to answer them.
How iTestServer and iTestClient work together
iTestServer: prepare and manage exams
iTestServer is the question-and-answer database editor and exam server. It organizes the question bank, creates tests, starts an exam service, stores sessions, and provides statistics. Its documented features include rich-text question formatting, randomized test generation, time limits per question or for the whole exam, and logs of completed sessions. The project homepage and official documentation describe these capabilities.

iTestClient: deliver the student test
iTestClient is the student-facing program. In network mode, client computers connect to the server and display the exam. The client can select questions randomly to create a unique test and save results. The documentation explains that students enter their names, start the test, and see the time remaining; they may finish early using the Finish control, or the test stops automatically when time runs out.
Can iTest run exams without a network?
Yes. The client manual documents an offline workflow: export a test from iTestServer, copy the resulting test file to removable media such as a USB flash drive, and load it on each student computer. Students then run the exam locally rather than connecting to a server. The iTestClient manual describes this process. It does not specify a particular flash-drive capacity or model.
