Use the washer maker’s app first: SmartThings is Samsung’s native route for compatible Samsung washers, while ThinQ is LG’s for supported LG models. Which controls you get depends on the exact washer, its market, and whether you enable remote operation at the machine. LG documents a limited Samsung-appliance connection in South Korea, but that is not universal cross-brand control.
Which app works with your washer?
Start with the model number and the country where the washer is sold. Samsung says to check the exact washer’s compatibility before adding it to SmartThings, and its setup guidance notes that functions can vary by country, network, software, and product. LG likewise ties ThinQ features to supported appliances and model-specific instructions.
- Samsung washer: use SmartThings if the exact model supports it. Older regional device or phone requirements should not be treated as universal current requirements. Check the washer’s own support page and the app’s requirements for your country.
What the apps let you do
The documented feature sets overlap, but they are not identical, and availability varies by washer.

Remote start still involves the washer
An app does not necessarily let you skip preparation at the appliance. For the LG top-load model covered by its guide, remote start is armed at the washer before you start the cycle from ThinQ:

- Hold Remote Start on the washer for three seconds to enable the function.
- Start the cycle in the ThinQ app.
If the washer door is opened, remote start cannot proceed. The guide says holding Remote Start for three seconds disables the function. This procedure is specific to the cited model guide; use the instructions for your washer rather than assuming the same button sequence applies to every LG model.

Can ThinQ control a Samsung washer?
In a limited case, yes: LG Electronics Korea’s support instructions dated May 29, 2026 describe linking selected Samsung appliances to ThinQ through SmartThings and an HCA integration. The instructions apply to South Korea, not as a general promise of compatibility in other countries. They list Wi-Fi Samsung washers and dryers first released from 2021 onward, along with product-line restrictions for LG laundry appliances; supported products and services can also vary by model and app or product version. For Samsung washers surfaced in ThinQ through this route, LG lists status display and start/cancel. Pause is not supported. That narrow feature list is why this integration should not be treated as equivalent to using a Samsung washer’s native SmartThings connection, nor as proof that SmartThings can control LG washers.

How to choose between them
- Already own a washer: verify its model and country-specific support first; the app name alone does not confirm remote start or other controls.
- Prioritize remote start: check what must be done at the washer before app control is available, then confirm the steps in that model’s guide.
- Want cycle planning or downloads: compare the exact washer’s supported cycle tools. Samsung describes Laundry Planner and downloadable cycles on some models; LG’s cited top-load guide limits stored downloads to one at a time.
- Want maintenance prompts or supply ordering: LG’s cited guide includes tub-clean coaching, energy monitoring, and optional supply reorders. Do not assume these features are included on every ThinQ washer.
- Choosing a new washer: treat app controls as one factor alongside the washer’s model-specific dimensions, capacity, wash performance, price, and warranty. The cited sources do not establish those appliance specifications or support a specific model recommendation.
