Clear the line between the remote and sensor, test the remote close to the TV, and check batteries or pairing before concluding the TV sensor has failed. Use your TV’s full model number to verify replacement parts and remote features.
Where is the IR sensor on a Samsung TV?
There is no single location shared by every Samsung TV. Samsung identifies common positions as the lower-right side or bottom center. On its Q80C, Samsung labels the remote-control sensor on the bottom of the television. Check the user manual for your exact model rather than relying on a position shown for another TV. Samsung’s Smart Remote guidance and the Q80C Series user manual describe these locations.
Can a soundbar or other object block the sensor?
Yes. An object between an infrared remote and the TV receiver can block the signal. Keep the lower edge of the TV and the receiver’s line of sight clear of a soundbar, decor, protective film, or other objects. Samsung also notes that nearby electronic equipment may interfere with remote operation; if clearing the path does not help, test with nearby lights, radios, or mobile devices moved away. How far away should you stand, and where should you aim?
For a controlled test, aim directly at the receiver from nearby. Samsung’s 2023 Q80C Series manual says: “Try pointing the remote directly at the TV from 5 ft. to 6 ft. (1.5-1.8 m) away.” This is a troubleshooting distance for that manual, not a universal maximum-range specification for all Samsung TVs or remotes. How can you tell whether the remote is sending infrared?
A phone or digital camera can help you check for an IR emission. Point the remote at the camera, press a button, and look for a light from the remote’s transmitter in the camera view. Some cameras filter infrared, so a missing visible light is not conclusive. Samsung describes this as a way to check the signal; a visible emission indicates the transmitter is operating, but it does not prove every button sends a valid command or that the TV’s receiver works. What should you check before blaming the TV sensor?
Work through these checks in order. A remote that emits infrared can still fail to control the TV because of obstruction, a depleted battery, or a pairing issue.

- Check power. Confirm batteries are inserted in the correct orientation and replace them if needed. For a rechargeable or solar remote, recharge it as directed for that model.
- Test the line of sight. Remove objects from between the remote and receiver, then aim directly at the sensor from the Q80C manual’s nearby test distance if you have that model.
- Check for IR emission. Use a phone or camera as described above. If no light is visible, try fresh batteries or charging before assuming the remote is faulty.
- Check pairing if you use a Smart Remote. Some Samsung Smart Remotes use Bluetooth as well as infrared, and pairing trouble can resemble an IR reception failure. Follow the pairing instructions for your TV and remote model.
- Isolate the likely fault. If the remote emits infrared but the TV still does not respond after you clear the path and test close to the receiver, check model-specific troubleshooting and pairing guidance before arranging a repair.
Samsung’s Q80C manual includes both the direct-aim test and Smart Remote pairing guidance. Samsung also provides Smart Remote troubleshooting.
Which replacement remote or control option should you use?
Choose a replacement based on the TV’s full model number and the features you need. A basic IR remote may provide basic controls without matching all Smart Remote functions; smart features or Bluetooth operation may require a compatible remote and pairing.

Samsung Canada advises searching with the TV model number to find an exact replacement and identifies BN59-01301A for basic functionality. Samsung UK discusses using another Samsung remote and SmartThings as a control alternative. Check the guidance for your region and model before buying.

Some Samsung TVs have a replaceable control or sensor assembly, but there is no universal sensor part number. A cited iFixit repair guide covers the P-Jog assembly for the Samsung UE32F5000AK and identifies BN96-26411B for that model only. That part number should not be applied to other TVs. For another model, begin with its full model number and verify compatibility through Samsung Parts or an authorized repair channel; do not order a sensor board based on appearance alone. iFixit’s UE32F5000AK P-Jog assembly guide is specific to that model.

Before opening the television, use the remote checks above to distinguish a likely receiver problem from a remote, obstruction, or pairing issue. The cited repair guide establishes a model-specific assembly and replacement example, not a general repair procedure for Samsung TVs.
