An image you upload to an AI service is a separate matter: the service may process it, retain related records, or use it for improvement according to its product, account settings, and policy.
What image data can go into AI model training?
There is no single image collection shared by all AI models. Providers describe using different combinations of publicly available online material, licensed or partner datasets, and data supplied by users, human trainers, or researchers. A provider may use information at several stages, including pretraining, post-training, and evaluation; the sources and mix vary by model.
OpenAI describes those broad categories for its foundation models in its model-development explainer. Anthropic lists public internet information, commercially obtained datasets, data from users or crowd workers, and information users permit it to use in its training-data explanation. These are provider-specific descriptions, not a universal account of every AI system.
Images are often paired with text
Vision-language models can train on images paired with captions or other text. The pairing helps a model learn statistical relationships between visual features and language. OpenAI describes image generation models as learning patterns in how pixels relate to one another and to associated captions.

Research datasets show the scale possible in this approach, but their counts should not be mistaken for an inventory of a current commercial model’s training set:
- The CLIP paper reported 400 million image-text pairs in 2021: Learning Transferable Visual Models From Natural Language Supervision.
- The LAION-5B paper described 5.85 billion CLIP-filtered image-text pairs, including 2.32 billion English-language pairs, in 2022: LAION-5B: An open large-scale dataset for training next generation image-text models.
Does a model store the pictures it learned from?
During training, a model’s numerical parameters are adjusted so it can represent patterns in its training examples. This is different from keeping the original images in a normal, searchable folder. OpenAI says its model “does not retain copies of the sentences, images, or audio it processes during training” in its explainer; Anthropic similarly describes learning patterns rather than storing training examples as a database.

That distinction is useful, but it is not a guarantee that a model can never memorize or reproduce details from training data. Nor does it explain what happens to a prompt, service log, feedback report, or safety-review record. Those are separate data-handling questions.
What happens to an image you upload?
An uploaded image is input to a service for the task you request, such as describing a picture or answering a question about it. Whether the provider later uses that image to improve models depends on the specific service, account type, settings, and policy. Uploading an image alone does not establish that it will be used for training.

ChatGPT consumer controls
OpenAI says ChatGPT users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” New conversations then remain in chat history but are not used to train ChatGPT. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create memories, and are not used to improve models; OpenAI says they are retained for 30 days for safety purposes before deletion. OpenAI says API inputs are not used to train or improve models by default unless a customer explicitly opts in. That training rule is distinct from operational retention: the API documentation describes abuse-monitoring logs and application-state retention, and says some approved organizations may qualify for Modified Abuse Monitoring or Zero Data Retention controls, subject to limitations. It also says image and file submissions are scanned for child sexual abuse material; an image flagged as potentially matching may be retained for manual review even when certain retention controls are enabled. Check the current API data-controls documentation for the endpoint and configuration you use.

Anthropic consumer services and feedback
Anthropic’s consumer materials describe user permission and feedback as relevant to model improvement. Its privacy article says a feedback report can include the associated conversation, which may be retained for up to five years and used for improvement or training as permitted by law. That is a feedback-specific example, not a blanket statement about every ordinary prompt or Anthropic commercial offering. See Anthropic’s consumer training-data guidance.

A provider may handle the same image at different stages for different purposes. Training use concerns whether data contributes to model improvement. Operational retention concerns records such as logs, conversation state, or feedback. Safety review can create separate exceptions or retention paths. An opt-out from training should not be assumed to delete service records, and account deletion should not be treated as proof that data has been removed from an already-trained model.

Policies can change, so check the current terms for the exact product and account you use. Consumer chat, business products, and APIs may have different controls. Where a service offers a feedback button, consider that submitting feedback may send the associated conversation for review or improvement under that provider’s stated policy.
