To check whether your motherboard supports a RAM upgrade, identify the exact motherboard and CPU, then compare the memory type, capacity, speed, and module arrangement in their official specifications. Search the board’s memory support list for the RAM kit’s exact part number, and use the motherboard manual to determine which slots to populate. A QVL listing is useful evidence of testing; a missing listing does not by itself prove that RAM is incompatible.

1. Identify your motherboard and processor

Start by finding the motherboard’s complete model name and, where applicable, its revision. Check the PC’s documentation or the information shown in BIOS/UEFI or a system-information utility. If the computer is an OEM prebuilt, note the complete system model too: its service documentation may be more relevant than a retail motherboard support page.

Also identify the installed CPU model. Memory support depends on both the board and processor, so checking only one can give an incomplete answer.

2. Check the motherboard specifications and manual

Go to the motherboard manufacturer’s official product page for the exact model and revision. Review its specifications, manual, and memory support page. MSI’s guide describes this model-specific lookup and installation workflow: MSI: How to Choose and Install Memory Correctly.

  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR4 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = UDIMM, Pin Count = 288-pin, PC Speed = PC4-25600, Voltage = 1.2V, Rank and Configuration = 1Rx8 or 2Rx8

Confirm these details before choosing a kit:

  • Memory generation and form factor: The board must support the RAM type and physical module format. DDR generations are not interchangeable.
  • Maximum capacity: Check the total supported capacity and, if documented, the supported capacity per DIMM.
  • DIMM slots: Note how many slots the board has and how many are already occupied.
  • Speed notes: Compare the kit’s rated speed with the board’s specifications and any conditions or configuration notes in the manual.
  • Population rules: Follow the manual’s diagram for one, two, or more modules. Slot names and preferred positions differ between boards.

For example, MSI’s cited guide recommends DIMMA2 for one module and DIMMA2 plus DIMMB2 for two on the board it discusses. Those positions are an example, not a rule for every motherboard.

3. Search the memory QVL for the exact kit

On the motherboard’s support page, find the memory support list or Qualified Vendor List (QVL). Search for the RAM kit’s exact part number, not just its brand or advertised speed. ASUS explains how to locate a motherboard’s memory QVL and search by memory model: ASUS: How to query (CPU/memory) QVL List?

A matching entry indicates that the manufacturer lists that configuration as tested. Check that the entry corresponds to your board and relevant CPU generation or other listed conditions; a similar-looking part number is not necessarily the same kit.

If your RAM is not listed

An absent QVL entry means the manufacturer has not officially tested or listed that exact model; it is not proof that the RAM will fail. MSI says compatibility cannot be guaranteed for unlisted memory, so treat the result as uncertainty rather than a definite incompatibility: MSI: How to check RAM specification?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an OEM prebuilt, a retail motherboard QVL may not describe every system-specific configuration. Check the computer maker’s service information as well as any available board support information.

4. Check the CPU’s memory limits

Look up the exact CPU model on its manufacturer’s specification page. For Intel processors, the specification page identifies fields such as supported memory type, maximum memory size, channel count, and ECC support. Intel also directs users to the motherboard manual or vendor for compatibility with a specific memory model: Intel: How to Find Max Memory Size, Max Speed, and Max Number of Channels Supported by Intel Processors.

  • [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
  • [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).

Compare the CPU’s supported memory type and limits with the motherboard specifications and your proposed kit. Do not assume that a board’s advertised capability overrides a more restrictive CPU limit.

5. Decide whether to add modules or replace the existing RAM

Check the number of occupied slots and the current module configuration. If you plan to add RAM, verify that the new modules meet the board and CPU requirements and that the combined capacity and slot arrangement are supported. If you plan to replace the existing modules, compare the new kit’s total capacity and exact part number against the same specifications and support list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that mixing different kits will produce the advertised speed or a stable configuration. The manufacturer documentation establishes model-specific support; it does not guarantee every combination of separate kits. When in doubt, check the board’s documentation and memory list for the configuration you intend to use.

6. Install in the documented slots and verify detection

  1. Shut down and disconnect power. Follow the safety and installation instructions in the motherboard manual.
  2. Install the modules in the prescribed slots. Use the board’s own population diagram rather than copying slot positions from another model.
  3. Start the PC and check BIOS/UEFI. Confirm that the expected total capacity is detected.
  4. Check the configured memory speed. The speed shown may be lower than the kit’s advertised rating until the relevant BIOS/UEFI memory profile or setting is configured, if supported.

MSI’s installation guide covers checking memory in BIOS/UEFI after installation: MSI: How to Choose and Install Memory Correctly.

Why RAM may run below its advertised speed

A module’s Serial Presence Detect (SPD) information can set a lower default frequency than its advertised rating. Intel recommends checking the memory configuration, BIOS/UEFI profile, motherboard QVL, and CPU support when the configured frequency is lower than expected: Intel: How to Configure the RAM Frequency to Match the Specification of the Intel Processor.

If the PC detects less capacity or a lower speed than expected, first recheck that the modules are fully seated and installed in the manual’s recommended slots. Then compare the detected configuration with the motherboard and CPU limits and review the relevant BIOS/UEFI settings. ASUS suggests considering a BIOS update when a configuration appears on the support list but still has compatibility problems; follow the board maker’s instructions for your exact model: ASUS: How to query (CPU/memory) QVL List?
