The deal brought TI expertise in 802.11 wireless networking and multiband, multimode radio technology—capabilities TI said would strengthen its RF semiconductor, subsystem, signal-processing and networking offerings.
What did Radia Communications make?
Radia was a Sunnyvale, California, RF chip and design company focused on 802.11 wireless local-area networking (WLAN) and multiband, multimode radios. TI’s filing described the technologies as relevant to 802.11 WLAN products, spanning RF semiconductors, subsystems, signal processing and networking.
The available accounts do not identify Radia’s exact product models or part numbers. They establish the company’s technology focus, not a catalog of specific chips.
Why did TI buy Radia?
TI presented the acquisition as a way to broaden its wireless and RF technology base and increase the expertise it had in-house. Joseph Crupi, then TI vice president and general manager of its Broadband Communications Group, said: “Having increased RF product offerings and engineering expertise in-house will accelerate our integration momentum.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That rationale connects Radia’s radio and WLAN design capabilities with TI’s broader semiconductor and networking offerings. The cited transaction accounts do not establish a specific product launch, customer, or manufacturing plan resulting from the deal.
How much did TI pay?
TI’s 2003 Form 10-Q says the company acquired 100% of Radia in July 2003 for approximately $133 million. A contemporaneous EE Times report dated July 30 said the terms had not been disclosed publicly at that time; TI’s later SEC disclosure provides the purchase figure.
