Download books and map areas before you lose service, and check that any notes or attachments you need are available locally. Offline features differ by app, device, region, and travel mode.
Which offline apps should you choose?

These are practical choices based on documented offline behavior, not a head-to-head performance ranking. The right option depends on your device and what you need to do without a connection.
How to prepare reading apps for offline use
Google Play Books: download the exact e-books
Use the mobile app and download the titles you expect to read while offline. Do not assume that a title visible in your library is already stored on the device. Google’s current help page says e-books can be downloaded for offline reading on mobile, but manga chapters are an exception.
Libby: distinguish downloaded loans from streaming
In the Libby mobile app, books and audiobooks download by default when you borrow them over Wi-Fi. A loan that has not downloaded streams and requires an internet connection. Magazines need to be downloaded manually. Libby’s web app always needs internet, so it is not an offline substitute for the mobile app. Libby’s help page was last updated September 3, 2026.

- While connected, open Libby and check the download status of each loan you plan to use.
- For a magazine, download it manually rather than relying on the default behavior for books and audiobooks.
- Open the downloaded title before departure to confirm it is available in the app.
Offline navigation: choose by device and travel mode
Apple Maps: multiple modes, with regional limits
On iOS 17 or later, Apple Maps can use selected downloaded areas offline for driving, walking, cycling, and public-transport directions, as well as place information. Offline Maps is not available in every region. The maps take up device storage and do not sync across devices. Apple’s support page, published December 29, 2025, explains how to download an area and reports its potential file size before you save it.
Google Maps: download the whole driving route
Google Maps can provide offline driving guidance only when the complete route falls inside a downloaded area. Its offline guidance does not include transit, walking, or cycling directions. Driving also loses live traffic information and alternate routes. These limitations apply to the Android and iPhone/iPad guidance linked above.

Save more than the narrow corridor between your start and destination: include the destination and nearby alternatives in the downloaded area. Downloaded maps are snapshots that may expire and need updating. Google Maps’ Android instructions allow offline areas to be saved to a portable-storage SD card on devices that support it; check your device’s compatibility rather than assuming this option is available.
Download, then verify the coverage
- While online, open the map app’s offline-map controls and select an area large enough to cover the entire route and nearby alternatives.
- Check that the destination is inside the selected area and that the app supports your travel mode offline.
- Review the space required before downloading. Apple Maps displays a potential file size; Google Maps Android may offer portable SD-card storage on qualifying devices.
- Update saved map areas before travel. Apple’s documented settings enable automatic map updates by default, though that setting can be changed.
Notes that remain available without internet
Obsidian stores notes locally, so they remain accessible offline on the device holding those files. Local access and synchronization are separate: viewing the same notes on multiple devices requires a configured method. Obsidian documents Obsidian Sync, cloud storage, local sync, and version control, with platform limitations for some approaches.

Before leaving, open the notes and any attachments you will need. If you rely on cloud-based synchronization, confirm the actual files are present on the device; successful syncing by itself does not establish offline availability. Keep a separate backup plan for important notes, since offline access is not the same as backup.

- Check that the chosen map covers the full route and nearby alternatives, and that the app supports the mode you plan to use offline.
- Make room for downloads; map areas and books use device storage.
- Open local notes and required attachments once before departure, and verify files needed from a sync service are available on the device.
- Refresh saved maps when needed, since downloaded areas can become outdated or expire.
