The historical product described as converting CAD and BOM data into PCB assembly documentation was CircuitCAM Assembly Documentation, associated with International Software Corp. Its purpose was to turn board design and parts-list data into assembly and inspection aids. Current PCB tools such as Unisoft’s ProntoVIEW-MARKUP and ProntoAOI offer comparable workflows, but the available information does not establish that CircuitCAM itself is still available or supported.
What CircuitCAM Assembly Documentation did
A product announcement reproduced in a NASA Technical Reports Server PDF says the module “converts CAD and BOM data into documentation for printed circuit board assemblies.” It describes using design and bill-of-materials data to create aids spanning board-level work through final assembly.
The announcement also describes color-coded outputs for engineering changes and links to video, audio, hypertext and OLE content. That points to a visual, linked documentation workflow rather than a simple export of a parts list. The available description does not provide an accuracy rate, time-saving figure or other performance benchmark.
How current PCB documentation tools compare
Unisoft’s current product descriptions cover a similar production-documentation need. Its suite describes importing CAD, Gerber, XY/rotation and BOM data to create PCB assembly-process documentation, work instructions and kitting labels. ProntoVIEW-MARKUP is described as supporting assembly, inspection, repair and technician troubleshooting in a viewer and process-documentation environment.

| Tool or product | Inputs and outputs described | Distinctive documented details |
|---|---|---|
| CircuitCAM Assembly Documentation (historical product announcement) | CAD/design and BOM data; PCB assembly and inspection aids from board level through final assembly. | Color-coded engineering-change outputs and links to OLE, video, audio and hypertext. Current availability and support are not stated in the announcement. |
| Unisoft suite (current product pages) | CAD, Gerber, XY/rotation and BOM data; PCB process documentation, work instructions and kitting labels. | The product pages describe a PCB production-documentation workflow. |
| ProntoVIEW-MARKUP (Unisoft product description) | CAD, Gerber and BOM data in a viewer and process-documentation environment. | Described for assembly, inspection, repair and technician troubleshooting. |
| ProntoAOI tutorial (Unisoft) | CAD and BOM files; assembly sheets, matching load lists and kitting labels. | The tutorial shows assigning parts to assembly steps, applying colors, and adding operation text and step numbers. |
| ZW3D (mechanical CAD documentation workflow) | 3D assembly; 2D drawings, BOM tables, exploded views and balloon annotations. | A related option for mechanical assemblies, not an equivalent PCB production tool. |
What a CAD-and-BOM-to-instructions workflow looks like
Unisoft’s ProntoAOI tutorial illustrates one concrete way to turn PCB design and parts data into shop-floor documents:
- Import the CAD and BOM files.
- Assign part numbers to assembly steps.
- Apply distinct colors to identify the parts or operations visually.
- Add operation text and step numbers.
- Print assembly sheets, matching load lists and kitting labels.
The resulting documents depend on the imported data and the step assignments. When comparing tools, check whether the required inputs are available and whether the outputs fit the process—not just whether the software can open the files.

How to choose a suitable tool
For PCB manufacturing, compare tools against the actual documentation and handoff needs of the line. Verify these points with the vendor or in a representative trial:
- Input coverage: Confirm support for the specific CAD, Gerber, XY/rotation and BOM formats you use.
- Required outputs: Check for the documents your process needs, such as assembly sheets, work instructions, kitting labels, inspection aids or load lists.
- Visual guidance: Determine whether operators can use step numbers, color coding and operation notes, and how engineering changes are reflected.
- Downstream work: If repair, rework, inspection or troubleshooting is part of the workflow, confirm that the tool covers those tasks.
- Engineering links and machine handoffs: Ask whether the workflow can link relevant engineering information or integrate with the machine-programming systems you use.
- Source-data cleanup: Test with representative files, including incomplete or inconsistent ones, and assess how much manual correction is needed before documents are usable.
- Commercial and support terms: Confirm licensing, support, compatibility and current availability directly; the historical CircuitCAM announcement does not establish those details for the module today.
PCB assembly documentation is different from mechanical assembly drawings
Mechanical CAD software can create useful assembly documentation too. ZW3D describes generating 2D drawings, BOM tables, exploded views and balloon annotations from a 3D assembly. Those outputs may suit mechanical build instructions, but they do not establish that a mechanical CAD package handles the PCB-specific inputs and production aids described for CircuitCAM or Unisoft’s tools.
