Microsoft is moving many settings to the Settings app and recommends using Settings whenever possible; Control Panel remains for compatibility and for options that have not migrated. For everyday changes, press Windows+I to open Settings. For specialized administration—or a setting still missing from Settings—use the relevant Control Panel page or Windows tool.
Is Windows Control Panel going away?
Gradually, but not completely as of Microsoft’s published guidance. Microsoft says many Control Panel settings are in the process of moving to Settings, while Control Panel remains available for compatibility and for settings that have not yet migrated. The company has not announced a date for removing Control Panel wholesale in its official pages on deprecated and removed Windows features.
That makes “phased down” more accurate than “gone.” Which route you need can depend on the setting and the Windows version.
What replaces Control Panel in Windows 11?
The Settings app is the everyday replacement for routine Windows configuration. Microsoft describes Settings as the main application for customizing and managing Windows, and says it is updated to support new Windows features. Open it with Windows+I, or search for a specific setting from Start.

Settings is not a single replacement for every Control Panel function. Advanced tasks are handled by dedicated administration tools, and some older pages remain in Control Panel. Use the destination that matches the task:
| Task | Where to go | Typical audience and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Display, network, Bluetooth, personalization, accounts, Windows Update | Settings | Routine configuration for most users. |
| Repair or reset a modern app | Settings > Apps | Check the app’s available options; not every app offers both. |
| Change or repair some desktop programs | Control Panel > Programs and Features | Some desktop programs still provide their maintenance options here. |
| Manage disks, services, devices, shared folders, or local users | Computer Management | Administrative tasks; changes can affect how Windows operates. |
| Review system and application logs | Event Viewer | Useful for diagnostics; interpreting entries may require technical context. |
| Troubleshoot startup; inspect hardware and software details | System Configuration; System Information | Diagnostic tools. Changing startup settings can affect stability. |
| Manage policy, environment variables, performance, or user profiles | Local Group Policy Editor; Advanced System Settings | Use only when the task calls for these controls. |
| Edit low-level Windows configuration | Registry Editor | Higher risk: incorrect changes can destabilize Windows. |
Where do I find Programs and Features now?
For some app maintenance, start in Settings > Apps and look for Repair or Reset in the app’s options. Availability varies by app. If you need to change, repair, or uninstall a desktop program and its options are not available there, open Control Panel and select Programs > Programs and Features. Some desktop programs still expose their maintenance actions through that older page.

Which settings still require Control Panel?
There is no fixed, version-independent list: Microsoft says settings are still migrating, and Control Panel remains for options that have not moved. If you cannot find a control in Settings, search for it from Start, then check Control Panel. For advanced administration, the right destination may be a separate Windows console rather than either app.

What happens to Command Prompt and PowerShell?
In Windows 11 22H2, Microsoft changed the default app that hosts console windows to Windows Terminal. Command Prompt and PowerShell remain available; Terminal is the host. Microsoft documents an option to select Windows Console Host instead when compatibility requires it. This is a change to how console windows open, not a removal of the command-line tools.
