Apple’s supported recording tools require a user action or consent, and Apple’s rules require a clear recording indicator. The important exception is sophisticated spyware that exploits a device vulnerability: that is a device-compromise threat, not a hidden permission available to ordinary apps.
How normal iPhone screen recording works
Apple’s recording tools require user involvement
For iOS and iPadOS apps using ReplayKit, Apple says a consent alert appears before recording starts, asking the user to acknowledge recording of the screen, microphone and front camera. The capture runs in the system’s replayd process rather than inside the app, and the movie file is stored where the app cannot directly access it.
Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit documentation also requires screen-recording permission and recommends the system content-sharing picker, which lets people choose content sources and manage active streams. The picker is a system-controlled sharing flow, not a hidden screen-recording entitlement for any app.
Apple’s rules require an indication
Apple’s App Review Guideline 2.5.14 requires covered apps to request explicit consent and provide a clear visual or audible indication when recording, logging or otherwise making a record of user activity. The Apple Developer Program License Agreement separately requires a reasonably conspicuous indicator for screen, video, microphone or camera recordings. These requirements do not establish that every conceivable app behavior is harmless; they do mean that silent, undisclosed screen recording is not an approved normal app feature.

What an app may learn when you share or record content
Starting a system recording or sharing flow is different from granting an app unrestricted access to everything on the display. The system controls the capture flow, and apps can respond to capture state: Apple exposes whether content is being recorded, mirrored or sent through AirPlay so apps can hide sensitive views or pause playback. Apple also says FairPlay Streaming video is not included in the recorded video stream.
For a particular app, check what you actually shared, what the app says it does with the resulting recording, and whether it explains upload, retention and deletion. A screen-capture utility that asks you to start a recording or choose content is not, by that fact alone, recording secretly. An app’s marketing claim that it can record invisibly should be treated as suspicious.

Why spyware is a different threat
Exploit-based spyware can compromise a targeted iPhone without the person starting a normal recording or approving an ordinary app prompt. Citizen Lab documented Paragon’s Graphite spyware on targeted journalists’ iPhones; Apple told the researchers that the zero-click vulnerability involved had been mitigated in iOS 18.3.1 and assigned CVE-2025-43200. In a separate 2023 report, Citizen Lab described BLASTPASS, an exploit chain capable of compromising iPhones running iOS 16.6 without victim interaction; Apple issued fixes for the reported vulnerabilities.
Those cases show that a sophisticated attacker may bypass normal app-consent protections by exploiting the operating system. They do not show that a popular App Store app has a secret screen-recording permission, nor do they provide a measure of how common such attacks are. Apple describes mercenary-spyware attacks as exceptionally costly and complex, and says it sends an Apple Threat Notification when it believes a person has been targeted.

How to check for ordinary capture activity
- Look for the system recording or sharing indicator. iOS provides an indication for active capture where applicable. If you see one unexpectedly, stop the capture or sharing session and check which app or system flow is active. An indicator is useful for ordinary capture; it cannot rule out a device compromised through an exploit.
- Review the App Privacy Report. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → App Privacy Report. Apple’s developer documentation says screen-recording activity entries identify the broadcaster, typically SpringBoard. That entry is not necessarily the name of an app secretly recording you, so interpret it as activity information rather than proof of spyware.
- Install iOS and app updates. Security fixes close known vulnerabilities. Pay particular attention to Apple security advisories if you are at elevated risk or receive a threat notification.
- Treat an Apple Threat Notification as serious. Follow the instructions shown by Apple. Apple says its notifications do not ask you to click links, install configuration profiles or provide account credentials. The absence of a notification, however, does not prove that a device has never been compromised.
- Get specialist help if the threat is credible. Journalists, activists and political dissidents facing targeted surveillance can consider Apple’s Lockdown Mode and professional forensic assistance. Battery drain, heat or sluggish performance on its own is not evidence of spyware infection.
