Which tools work best for rapid prototypes? The best fit depends on how you build: try Cursor for AI-led iteration in an editor, GitHub Copilot if you want assistance across GitHub and your coding environment, Claude Code for terminal-directed project work, or OpenAI Codex when pairing and delegated tasks suit your workflow. Official product documentation describes different capabilities, but does not provide a shared benchmark showing which one builds a prototype fastest or best.

How to choose an AI coding assistant for a rapid prototype

Short build cycles reward a workflow that makes it easy to give the assistant relevant context, review changes, run the project, and correct mistakes. Rather than pick a universal winner, match the tool to where you already work and how much autonomy you want it to have.

  • Workspace fit: Does the assistant live in your editor, terminal, or GitHub workflow?
  • Context gathering: Can it find relevant files and understand the project structure?
  • Change scope: Can it make multi-file edits, or does it mainly suggest changes for you to apply?
  • Command execution: Can it run and inspect commands, and what approvals or permission controls apply?
  • Review and verification: Can you inspect a clear diff, run the app and tests, and identify what still needs work?
  • Usage and billing: Will plan limits or usage-based charges affect how many iterations you can make?

For a fair personal comparison, give each assistant the same small, representative task in the same repository, with the same requirements and constraints. Compare the changes, command behavior, review effort, and working result—not just how quickly the first response appears. This is a suggested way to evaluate tools, not a reported benchmark.

AI coding assistants compared

Tool Consider it if you prefer Documented prototype-relevant workflow Important qualification
Cursor Working in an AI-oriented editor with an agent Agent mode can explore a codebase, edit multiple files, run terminal commands, and fix errors. Ask mode can search and explain without changing files. These are documented capabilities, not evidence of superior speed or output quality. Cursor labels its CLI interface beta.
GitHub Copilot Keeping assistance within GitHub and a supported coding environment GitHub describes assistance across IDE, CLI, and GitHub surfaces, including chat, agent, code review, cloud agent, and apps. Chat and agent capabilities use AI Credits under the plan information. Plan details and allowances can change; check the current page.
Claude Code Directing an agent from a terminal in a project directory Supports interactive and print-mode use, piped input, session continuation, model selection, and permission modes. Documented workflows do not establish comparative prototype speed or success. Setup routes include Claude Console, Claude Pro/Max, and enterprise authentication.
OpenAI Codex Pairing in an IDE or terminal, or delegating coding tasks OpenAI describes Codex as a coding agent for feature work and other coding tasks, with IDE, terminal, and delegated workflows across its product materials. Those descriptions do not establish that Codex outperforms the alternatives.

Which tool fits your workflow?

Choose Cursor for editor-based agent iteration

Cursor is a reasonable starting point if you want an assistant to work directly across a project while you stay in an editor. Its Agent documentation describes codebase exploration, multi-file editing, terminal commands, and error fixing. Use Ask when you want it to search or explain without making changes; its modes documentation also describes custom modes. The CLI is labeled beta in Cursor’s CLI documentation.

Choose GitHub Copilot if GitHub is already central to your setup

Copilot may fit developers who want assistance across their existing IDE, CLI, and GitHub work rather than moving to a different editor-centered workflow. GitHub lists these product surfaces on its Copilot product page. Its plans page explains that chat and agent capabilities use AI Credits. Check that page for the current plan terms and allowances before relying on a particular limit.

Choose Claude Code for terminal-directed project work

Claude Code is suited to developers who are comfortable launching and directing an agent from a project directory. Anthropic’s CLI documentation covers interactive and print use, piping input, resuming sessions, model selection, and permission modes. Its setup documentation describes access through Claude Console, Claude Pro/Max, and enterprise authentication routes.

Choose Codex if IDE/terminal pairing or delegation matters

OpenAI presents Codex as a coding agent for building features and other coding tasks. Its materials describe using it alongside an IDE or terminal and delegating work; see the Codex product page and Codex announcement. These descriptions support considering Codex for those workflows, but not a claim that it is the best-performing choice.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you

The official pages cited here establish product workflows and capabilities, not a controlled, cross-vendor test of prototype speed, quality, or success rate. No shared performance statistic is established by those materials. Treat the choices above as workflow-fit recommendations, then judge candidates on a task from your own project. Product surfaces, account routes, plan names, model access, beta labels, and usage terms may change; consult each vendor’s linked official pages for current details.
