If bean-to-cup coffee tastes weak or watery, try a stronger drink setting and—if your machine’s manual allows it—a slightly finer grind. If it tastes too strong or bitter, try a slightly coarser grind instead. Change one setting at a time, then check the beans and maintenance alerts before making larger adjustments. Grinder controls and cleaning procedures vary by model, so follow your machine’s manual.
First, identify what is wrong with the cup
“Weak” or “watery” coffee calls for a different first adjustment than coffee that is “too strong” or bitter. Also note whether the taste changed after you installed the machine, changed beans, or adjusted a setting. Some supported Philips/Saeco machines can make watery first cups while an adapting system adjusts; Philips advises brewing more cups on those models. That advice is not a universal cup count for all machines.
Adjust strength and grind in small steps
If the coffee is weak or watery
Check the drink’s strength setting first and raise it by a small amount. De’Longhi also recommends moving the grinder finer one notch at a time for weak coffee. On the models covered by its guidance, make that adjustment while the grinder is running; do not turn a grinder while it is stopped unless your manual says it is safe. If the coffee is too strong or bitter
Try a slightly coarser grind, changing only one increment before tasting again. JURA recommends a coarser grind for coffee that is too strong or bitter. Do not assume that the same grind direction or control works identically on every brand: check the model’s manual before adjusting it.

Let supported machines adapt
After a setting change, make several drinks and taste the result rather than making repeated adjustments back-to-back. Philips says first cups can be watery on supported adapting models and advises brewing more cups as the system adjusts. Follow your manufacturer’s advice for the specific machine rather than applying a fixed number of cups across brands.
Check the beans before chasing settings
Bean origin, blend—including the Arabica and Robusta composition—and roast darkness can affect the result. De’Longhi recommends espresso-suitable coffee beans when troubleshooting weak coffee. Try one suitable bean at a time so you can tell whether the change helped; no roast level is a guaranteed fix for bitterness or weakness on every machine.

For its fully automatic machines, De’Longhi cautions against oily, caramelised, or coated beans because they may stick to the grinder. Its care guidance also says to store beans dry and away from light. Check your own manufacturer’s advice if you are unsure which beans are appropriate. Inspect cleaning and coffee flow
If coffee is watery, slow, or inconsistent, check the machine’s maintenance messages and cleaning instructions. Philips lists a dirty brew group, a blocked coffee funnel, and a filter that was not prepared correctly or has clogged among possible causes of watery coffee on applicable models. Its Philips espresso-machine troubleshooting page gives model-relevant examples such as rinsing the brew group, cleaning the funnel, and checking the filter.

Do not remove a brew group or put a tool into a funnel based on generic advice. Access and cleaning steps differ by model. For example, De’Longhi says that on the models covered by its instructions, the removable brewing unit should be rinsed with water only after the appliance has completed shutdown. Check its cleaning instructions and your exact model’s manual before handling internal parts.

A filter that is clogged or was not prepared correctly can affect dispensing on applicable Philips/Saeco machines. Check the filter’s status and follow your model’s preparation instructions. A filter does not necessarily remove the need to descale.

Use the machine’s alerts, manual, and local water conditions to decide when to descale. De’Longhi says descaling frequency depends on water hardness, names EcoDecalk in its care guidance, and advises against vinegar because it may leave an acid taste and smell. JURA likewise directs owners to set water hardness for local conditions and descale as indicated for the model. Choose a descaler compatible with your exact machine and follow its instructions; one brand’s product recommendation does not establish compatibility with another brand’s machine.
