Most Disk Cleanup categories are temporary files or caches, but the contents are not equally disposable. The main choice to pause over is Previous Windows installation(s): deleting it removes the files needed to return to the previous Windows version. Review Downloads and other personal files individually rather than assuming they are junk.
Which Disk Cleanup files can you delete?
Disk Cleanup describes the file types it can remove. Read the description for each category and leave its checkbox clear if you need to keep those files. Microsoft documents Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Thumbnails as default selections; defaults and available categories can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing drive space also covers Disk Cleanup and newer Settings-based cleanup options.
| Category or option | What to consider before selecting it |
|---|---|
| Downloaded Program Files | Disk Cleanup lists this among its documented default selections. Read the on-screen description and decide whether you need the files. |
| Temporary Internet Files | Listed as a documented default selection. Check the description before removing the category. |
| Thumbnails | Listed as a documented default selection. Check the description before removing the category. |
| Delivery Optimization Files | A cache used for Windows Update, Store apps, and other Microsoft content. Windows clears it automatically after a short time or when it uses too much disk space; you can also select it in Disk Cleanup. Microsoft explains Delivery Optimization. |
| Previous Windows installation(s) | Deletes Windows.old and removes the option to return to the previous Windows version. This is not a routine cache cleanup; see the rollback warning below. |
| Downloads | Treat this as personal storage, not automatically disposable temporary data. Check files individually and keep, move, or back up anything you may need. |
The table describes the categories addressed in Microsoft’s guidance, not a guarantee that every category appears on every PC. Use the description shown on your device as the guide for the specific files being removed.
What does deleting Previous Windows installation(s) do?
It removes Windows.old files used to go back to the prior Windows version. Microsoft says the previous version is automatically deleted 10 days after an upgrade; deleting it earlier can make sense only if you are confident the upgraded Windows installation and your files are working as expected. Microsoft warns: “If you delete your previous version of Windows, this can’t be undone (you won’t be able to go back to your previous version of Windows).”

Is Downloads safe to delete?
Not automatically. Downloads commonly contains saved personal files, and Microsoft says Storage Sense does not manage that folder by default unless you configure it to do so. Open the folder, review its contents, and delete only files you no longer need. Back up or move wanted files before removing them.
How to run Disk Cleanup carefully
- Open Disk Cleanup from Windows search.
- Choose the drive to clean, commonly the Windows drive, and select OK.
- Review each category’s description and checkbox. Leave personal or unclear items unselected until you know what they contain.
- To see system-file categories, select Clean up system files, choose the drive again if prompted, and review the refreshed list. Treat Previous Windows installation(s) as an irreversible rollback decision.
- Select OK, then confirm the cleanup of the selected files.
Exact menus and category names can differ across Windows releases and devices. Do not manually delete arbitrary files from Windows, Program Files, or user folders as a substitute for choosing Disk Cleanup categories.

Can Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations do this instead?
Windows Settings also offers Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations, which show cleanup categories and estimated space savings. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents, but its handling of Downloads and cloud files depends on your settings. Review those settings before enabling automatic cleanup. If a cloud file is made online-only, it is not permanently deleted; it can be made locally available again when storage and network conditions allow. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance describes the options.

Disk Cleanup is not the only way to reclaim space. Microsoft suggests moving personal files such as photos, music, videos, and documents to external storage. Move only files you want to keep, and verify that they are accessible from the destination before removing any originals.
