Use Windows’ reviewed cleanup options for temporary files, and delete or move personal files only after checking what they contain.
1. Find the drive that is low and see what is using its space
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the capacity bars to identify the affected drive.
- Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows breaks usage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage. Review the categories before choosing a cleanup method. See Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 use slightly different labels and options, and the exact screens can vary by release. If a category is taking most of the space, focus on that category rather than removing unrelated files.
2. Remove temporary files with Windows’ cleanup tools
Review Cleanup recommendations
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review the listed categories and individual items, then select only what you intend to remove. Windows may offer temporary files and items that can be deleted to reclaim space. Microsoft’s overview of the available methods is Free up drive space in Windows.
Take particular care with any option for a previous Windows installation: removing it frees space, but you will lose the option to return to the prior Windows version. Do not select it if you may need that rollback.

Use Storage Sense for recurring cleanup
Storage Sense can automatically remove eligible temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Find its controls under Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense, then review the settings before enabling or changing its schedule. By default, Storage Sense does not manage files in Downloads or cloud content; check its configuration if you want those behaviors changed. Microsoft explains its scope and defaults in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
Use Disk Cleanup when appropriate
On Windows 10, Microsoft also describes Disk Cleanup as an option, including for cases where Storage Sense is unavailable. Search for Disk Cleanup from the taskbar, choose the drive to clean, and review the categories before confirming. Available choices depend on the PC and Windows version; do not select a category unless you understand what it removes.

3. Delete or move large personal files
When photos, videos, music, or documents account for the space, review large folders and sort files by size where available. Delete only files you no longer want. If you want to keep a file but do not need it on the PC, move it to an external drive such as a USB drive or SD card. Files stored externally will not use space on the PC, but the drive must be connected whenever you want to access them. Microsoft’s Windows space-saving guidance covers external storage.
Files sent to the Recycle Bin may continue to occupy space. Empty it when you are sure you no longer need those files and want them to stop using local storage.

4. Fix a Temp folder that quickly fills again
If the warning returns soon after cleanup and the Temp folder refills with Microsoft Store .appx files, Microsoft documents a targeted troubleshooting sequence. Run the steps in order rather than repeatedly deleting the same temporary files:
- Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.
- Clear the Microsoft Store cache by running
wsreset.exe. - Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart the PC.

5. Free space when Windows needs an update
For update-related warnings, start with Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup where available; moving personal files to external storage is another option. The amount of free space required is not a single universal figure: it varies with optional content installed on the device and the updates that apply. In some update paths, external storage can reduce the free space needed on the system drive. Microsoft’s current guidance is at Free up space for Windows updates.
