A stable printer with a properly trammed bed and a well-tuned first layer can print reliably without a probe. Auto bed leveling is a convenience and consistency feature: it measures small variations in the print surface and, when the printer uses the resulting mesh, compensates for them as it prints. It does not physically level the bed or eliminate setup.
What “auto bed leveling” actually does
The term can be confusing because “leveling” often refers to two different jobs. Mechanical tramming adjusts the bed or gantry so the nozzle and bed are aligned. Automatic bed leveling uses a sensor to measure the surface at points and may create a mesh that the printer follows to compensate for small height differences during printing. Creality describes manual, assisted, and automatic approaches; Prusa describes probing a grid and interpolating the readings into a virtual mesh. The exact probing, storage, and activation process varies by printer model. Creality’s bed-leveling guide and Prusa’s mesh bed-leveling documentation explain their respective implementations.
That distinction explains why a printer with a probe may still ask you to adjust the bed manually: the probe can compensate for small surface variation, but it is not a mechanical fix for a loose, badly tilted, or unstable assembly. Creality says its automatic system works more effectively when the mechanical base is stable. Its guide also notes that Z-offset still matters: a nozzle set too high may not lay filament down firmly, while one set too low can over-compress the first layer or scrape the surface.
When auto bed leveling is worth having
- You want less repeated manual adjustment. A probe and active compensation mesh can reduce the need to repeatedly correct small surface differences by hand.
- Your build area is large or first-layer height varies across the plate. Measuring multiple locations can help account for slight variation across the print surface.
- You change the printer’s setup or surfaces. Calibration can be useful after moving the printer, changing a nozzle or build plate, updating firmware, or doing maintenance; follow the instructions for your model. Creality recommends checking leveling when first-layer behavior changes and after such changes.
These are practical reasons to value the feature, not a guarantee of better prints. Probing will not solve a dirty plate, incorrect Z-offset, loose mechanics, or a mesh that is not being used. No cited source establishes a universal percentage for time saved or failed prints prevented.

When manual leveling is enough
If your bed and printer stay stable and you can get a consistent first layer, manual tramming may be all you need. A printer without a probe is not automatically a poor choice; learning its prescribed manual or assisted procedure and tuning first-layer height can be sufficient. If you later consider an upgrade, check compatibility with the exact printer model, control board, firmware, mounting arrangement, and wiring before buying a probe.
What to check if the first layer is wrong
- Clean the build plate. Contamination can interfere with adhesion; a bed-leveling sensor cannot clean the surface or make filament stick to it.
- Check the first-layer height and Z-offset. If filament is not bonding, the nozzle may be too high; if the layer is excessively compressed or the nozzle scrapes, it may be too low. Make small adjustments using the procedure for your printer. Creality’s guide describes these effects.
- Check mechanical stability and tram the bed as directed. A probe measures; it does not tighten loose parts or mechanically straighten the bed.
- Run the printer’s prescribed calibration and confirm mesh use. Depending on the model, you may need to save or select a mesh or profile for it to affect a print. Do not assume every printer stores or activates compensation in the same way.
- Recalibrate after relevant changes. Moving the printer, replacing a nozzle or plate, firmware changes, or maintenance can change first-layer behavior. Use the model-specific instructions.
Mesh density is printer-specific
For its documented implementation, Prusa allows mesh density from 3×3 (9 points) to 7×7 (49 points), and suggests denser measurement if uneven first-layer adhesion remains. Those settings are specific to the Prusa documentation and are not a universal recommendation for other printers. Prusa Knowledge Base: Mesh bed leveling.

How to choose between printers or methods
Do not treat the presence of a probe as a stand-alone print-quality rating. Compare the practical setup and ownership trade-offs that matter for your use:
- How much manual calibration the printer requires and how often it is likely to need attention.
- Whether probing and compensation are included, and how the printer applies them.
- How clearly you can set Z-offset and save or use a mesh.
- Build-plate size and how much repeatability across the surface matters for your prints.
- Whether a probe upgrade is compatible and what it would cost.
- The printer’s overall reliability, maintenance demands, and support.
For a first printer, regard auto bed leveling as a convenience rather than a requirement, and weigh it alongside build volume, supported materials, maintenance, reliability, and total cost. The available manufacturer documentation explains how their systems work but does not establish that auto leveling alone predicts print quality.

Why a printer with auto leveling can still ask for manual adjustment
A probe and manual adjustment are not contradictory. The bed may need a basic mechanical alignment first, while probing measures residual surface differences and compensation handles small variation during a print. A user in the 3D-printing community posed this same question about a new printer asking for manual leveling despite having auto leveling; the practical answer is to follow the model’s setup procedure rather than assume the probe replaces every adjustment.
