Browser isolation runs web content inside a separated environment so that malicious code has less direct access to a user’s device or other browsing sessions. Use it when people need to visit untrusted or high-risk sites, or when the possible impact of a web attack is serious enough to justify extra controls and operational overhead. It is a containment layer—not a substitute for browser updates, web filtering, identity controls, or endpoint security.
What browser isolation does
A browser loads active content—such as scripts and other code—from websites. Isolation changes where that content runs or what it can reach. A local isolation setup confines the browser in a sandbox or virtual machine on the user’s device. Remote browser isolation (RBI) runs the browsing session in a remote or hosted environment and sends an interactive representation back to the user.
The aim is to limit the damage if a site is malicious or compromised. The National Security Agency describes isolation as containing malicious code in an ephemeral environment, reducing the impact of an exploit. That reduces exposure; it does not guarantee that an attack cannot succeed. NSA, Steps to Secure Web Browsing
Browser isolation is not the same as Chrome site isolation
“Browser isolation” can refer to different security boundaries. In particular, remote browser isolation and browser site isolation are not interchangeable terms.

| Approach | Where web content runs | What is separated |
|---|---|---|
| Local browser isolation | On the user’s device, inside a sandbox or virtual machine | Browser activity from the operating system or other local environment |
| Remote browser isolation (RBI) | In a remote virtualized or hosted environment | Active web content from the endpoint and, depending on the design, the corporate network |
| Browser site isolation | Locally, in the browser’s process architecture | Pages from different websites from one another |
Google describes Chrome site isolation as separating pages from different websites into separate processes, making it harder for one site to access another site’s data. It does not move the browsing session into a remote cloud browser. Google’s administrator documentation says desktop site isolation has been enabled by default since Chrome 76 and on most Android devices for sites users sign into since Chrome 77; administrators can also require it or isolate additional origins with policy. These are version-specific statements from Google’s documentation. Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help: Protect your data with site isolation
When browser isolation is useful
Isolation is most relevant when web content is untrusted or a successful compromise could have significant consequences. It can be applied selectively or more broadly, depending on the organization’s policy and tolerance for workflow friction.

- Risky or unfamiliar destinations: Route selected categories of sites, links, downloads, or attachments into isolation rather than letting their active content run directly on endpoints.
- High-impact users or systems: Consider it where a web-originated attack could expose sensitive data or disrupt important work.
- Contractors and remote users: A remote browsing path can add separation when users access the web from managed devices or environments with tighter security requirements.
- Broad zero-trust policies: An organization that does not implicitly trust web traffic may choose broader or full-time isolation. NIST’s earlier preliminary zero-trust example describes this as a policy choice, not a universal requirement.
CISA’s browser guidance describes configurable policies ranging from isolating some traffic to isolating every download, attachment, and link. The right scope depends on the risk and how much of the user’s normal workflow can be supported. CISA, Guidance for Securing Web Browsers · NIST NCCoE preliminary zero-trust example
What isolation can control—and what it cannot
Moving web execution away from an endpoint can reduce its direct exposure to active web content. Some RBI products also let administrators restrict what users can do in an isolated session, including keyboard input, copy and paste, uploads, downloads, or printing. For example, Palo Alto Networks documents profile controls for those actions; Cloudflare documents options to restrict user input on risky sites and control data transmission to sensitive web applications. These capabilities are product-specific, not guaranteed features of every isolation deployment. Palo Alto Networks, Remote Browser Isolation · Cloudflare, Remote Browser Isolation

Even after prolonged use, you will get a brand new privacy screen for your desktop computer monitor after cleaning. Very Durable!
Isolation does not eliminate browser vulnerabilities, misconfiguration, weak identity controls, or risks from data that users are allowed to move between the isolated session and their device. The isolation service and its infrastructure also become part of the security boundary. Keep browsers and operating systems patched, and continue using appropriate web filtering, access controls, endpoint protection, and monitoring. The NSA warns that zero-day vulnerabilities can defeat many browser defenses and recommends layered mitigations, including isolation. NSA, Steps to Secure Web Browsing
Tradeoffs and privacy questions to assess
Remote isolation adds a service and network path to browsing. The NSA identifies cost, usability, potential single points of failure, and throughput capacity as issues to assess. Their impact will depend on the architecture, network path, workload, policy, and provider capacity; they are evaluation questions, not guaranteed outcomes.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
Before expanding deployment, test representative applications and media, latency, file transfers, authentication, failover, and support workflows. Also establish what happens when the isolation service is unavailable and which browsing functions have exceptions.
Remote services may decrypt traffic and retain logs, so review the provider’s data-processing and privacy terms, not just the security feature list. Cloudflare says its isolation product decrypts internet traffic using its root CA for transparent isolated browsing and threat blocking, and that traffic logs are retained according to its Zero Trust documentation. That statement is specific to Cloudflare; check the selected provider’s certificate model, logging and retention rules, processing locations, jurisdiction, and administrative access. How to evaluate an isolation option
Compare the actual controls and operating model, not just the product label. Useful questions include:
- Execution boundary: Does content run in a local sandbox or VM, a remote session, or only in separate local browser processes?
- Traffic scope: Can policy isolate selected risky destinations and file flows, or does it send all browsing through isolation?
- User actions: Can administrators set rules for keyboard input, clipboard, copy and paste, uploads, downloads, printing, and authentication?
- Data handling: Does the service decrypt traffic? How are sessions handled, logs retained, and processing locations determined? Who can access the data?
- Availability and performance: What are the latency, throughput, media compatibility, capacity, failover, and business-continuity implications for your users?
- Integration and administration: How does it work with identity, endpoint, secure web gateway, DNS, data-loss-prevention, and network policies?
- Total operational cost: Include licenses or infrastructure, support, exceptions, and workflow friction—not only the purchase price.

How vendor plans and requirements fit in
Specific licensing and service requirements are not universal properties of browser isolation. As of its documentation updated September 30, 2026, Cloudflare lists Browser Isolation as an add-on for Zero Trust Pay-as-you-go and Enterprise plans. Palo Alto Networks describes RBI for Prisma Access and lists a Prisma Access subscription and an RBI license among its prerequisites; its documentation also specifies a minimum Prisma Access version. Verify current availability, licensing, and version requirements directly with the provider before making a deployment decision.
