The smallest practical Linux computer in this build guide is a headless Raspberry Pi Zero: the board, a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS, and a micro-USB power supply. Image the card using another computer, boot the Zero, and manage it over the network. “From scratch” can mean assembling and configuring a working Linux computer; compiling Linux itself is a separate, more demanding learning project.
What you need for a practical Pi Zero Linux computer
Raspberry Pi describes the Zero as a tiny computer. Its listed specifications are a 1GHz single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, mini-HDMI, micro-USB OTG, micro-USB power and a 40-pin header (Raspberry Pi Foundation, 2026). The official getting-started requirements are a microSD card containing Raspberry Pi OS and a micro-USB power supply (Raspberry Pi, 2026).
- Raspberry Pi Zero: the computer board.
- microSD card: holds the operating system.
- micro-USB power supply: powers the board.
The Zero’s small size is useful when the goal is a compact Linux device, but its single-core processor and 512MB of memory leave limited headroom. A headless setup avoids the extra display and input hardware, making it the simplest and physically smallest route.
Choose a build path
| Build | What it involves | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Headless Pi Zero | Pi Zero, microSD with Raspberry Pi OS, micro-USB power; administer over the network. | A compact Linux computer or service without a local display. |
| Interactive Pi Zero | Add a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable, USB OTG adapter or hub, keyboard and mouse. | Cases where local screen and input are needed. |
| Kernel-from-source learning build | Use a faster Linux host to cross-compile the kernel for the Zero. | Learning kernel configuration and cross-compilation. |
| Embedded custom design | Use a Compute Module with a carrier board. | Embedded or industrial projects that call for a custom carrier design. |
Fastest working build: headless
- On another computer, write a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS.
- Insert the card into the Pi Zero and connect a stable micro-USB power supply.
- Boot the board and configure SSH or another remote-management method so you can administer it over the network.
The build instructions establish the headless route, but do not specify an SSH setup screen or a particular imaging utility; use the current instructions for the Raspberry Pi OS version you choose.

Interactive build: add local I/O
For a local monitor, Raspberry Pi documentation specifies a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable for Pi Zero and Zero 2. Add a USB OTG adapter or hub, keyboard and mouse as needed. These accessories increase the hardware and power demands, so the interactive setup has tighter performance and power constraints than a headless one.
Kernel-from-source build: compile on a faster host
Compiling a kernel is not required to make the Zero run Linux. It is a distinct learning path: Raspberry Pi’s kernel guide gives the Pi Zero a 32-bit bcmrpi_defconfig configuration path and documents the ARM cross-compilation variables (Raspberry Pi Documentation, 2026). Use a faster Linux host for this work. The documented details establish the configuration path, but not a ready-made command sequence here; follow the current kernel guide for the exact host setup and commands.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Custom embedded build: Compute Module
For a purpose-built embedded computer, Raspberry Pi positions Compute Modules for embedded and industrial applications and documents carrier-board development (Raspberry Pi Documentation, 2026). This route replaces the simple board-and-card build with a carrier-board design and more engineering work; it is not the easiest way to make a tiny general-purpose Linux computer.
What changes the size, capability and effort?
Compare a design on four axes: physical size, software effort, I/O requirements, and power and thermal budget. A Pi Zero prioritizes compactness and simplicity over performance. A larger Pi or a Compute Module carrier design can increase capability, but the latter adds design effort.

- Keep the first image minimal. The Zero has limited CPU and memory headroom; a headless service or lightweight interface is a more suitable starting point than assuming a demanding desktop will feel responsive.
- Account for peripherals. USB storage devices have power requirements, and adding a hub, keyboard, mouse or storage changes the power budget.
- Consider heat under sustained load. Raspberry Pi documentation notes that a heatsink or small fan can reduce thermal throttling.
- Check storage compatibility for older boards. Raspberry Pi documentation records a 256GB-or-less boot-partition limitation for the original Pi Zero. Treat that as an older-hardware caveat, not a blanket specification for every Zero-family board.
When to choose something larger
Choose the Pi Zero when the physical footprint matters more than performance and the intended workload can fit its modest resources. Move to a larger Pi if the project needs more capability. Choose a Compute Module with a carrier board when the goal is an embedded design and the extra engineering is justified. The official sources cited here do not establish a current price, complete-build cost, benchmark score or battery-life figure, so none should be assumed from the board’s size or specification alone.
