Published on GPUOpen on December 14, 2023, the DirectX 12 and Unreal Engine 5 source was released under the permissive MIT license. That lowers adoption barriers and gives studios more implementation options, while actual game support still depends on each developer.
What AMD’s FSR 3 source release actually changed
AMD published the full source for FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) on GPUOpen, including DirectX 12 code and an Unreal Engine 5 plugin. The release includes more than code: developers can also use samples, SDK binaries, plugins and documentation to evaluate and integrate the technology. AMD recommended the FidelityFX SDK DLL build for easier debugging and future API compatibility. AMD’s announcement describes the source release and MIT license.
The MIT license allows developers to use, modify and redistribute the code under its terms. That makes the implementation more accessible for studios and engine teams, but it does not compel a game developer to add FSR 3 or make every integration equivalent.
Why FSR 3 matters to players
More developers can evaluate and integrate it
Source code, samples and an Unreal Engine plugin give teams several routes to assess how FSR 3 fits their engine and rendering pipeline. That can reduce barriers to adoption compared with relying only on a closed implementation, but each studio still has to do the integration and testing.

It is not limited to AMD graphics hardware
AMD describes FSR 3 as an open technology that does not require machine-learning hardware. AMD’s 2024 guidance lists Radeon RX 5000 Series and newer as supported, with RX 6000 Series and newer recommended. Open availability does not by itself guarantee identical performance or image quality across AMD, Nvidia and Intel GPUs; results depend on the specific GPU, game integration and settings. AMD’s FSR 3.1 guidance covers its platform and hardware recommendations.
Frame generation creates additional, synthetic frames
FSR 3 builds on temporal upscaling associated with FSR 2 and adds frame generation. It uses frame interpolation and optical-flow technology to create extra frames between rendered ones. Those generated frames can raise the displayed frame rate, but they are not additional frames rendered directly by the game. The result depends on inputs such as motion vectors and depth data, as well as engine integration and display behavior; artifacts or uneven motion are possible.

FSR 3.1 broadened integration options
FSR 3.1 separated frame generation from upscaling, allowing a developer to pair FSR frame generation with a different upscaler rather than requiring FSR upscaling. AMD also added Vulkan support and expanded engine compatibility. AMD’s current technical guidance describes DirectX 12 and Vulkan support and Unreal Engine 5.1–5.6 support. The FSR 3.1 documentation explains the changes.
This separation offers developers flexibility, not a universal compatibility switch: the game still needs a suitable implementation. Likewise, source availability can help teams update or maintain an integration, but does not guarantee that every game will receive future FSR features.

What FSR 3 means for existing games
Publishing code does not add FSR 3 to games automatically. A developer has to integrate it, provide the required rendering data and test it in that game. Support can therefore vary by title even when the same GPU and API are involved.
There is one possible upgrade path for some existing integrations: AMD’s supported-games page says that games with specified FSR 3.1 integrations can receive driver-based upgrades to newer AMD FSR technologies under stated Windows 11 and DirectX 12 conditions. This is game-specific, not a promise that all FSR 3 games will be upgraded. Check AMD’s supported-games list for current eligibility and titles.

What hardware and setup do players need?
AMD’s 2024 guidance lists Radeon RX 5000 Series and newer as supported for FSR 3, and recommends RX 6000 Series and newer. Because FSR is not dependent on machine-learning hardware, it is not inherently limited to Radeon cards; however, the game must offer the feature and practical results vary by GPU and implementation.
- Start with adequate performance: AMD recommends approximately 60 FPS before enabling frame generation, to help preserve image quality and mitigate added latency. Frame generation is generally a poor substitute for a stable baseline frame rate.
- Use a compatible variable-refresh-rate display when available: AMD recommends enabling FreeSync on compatible displays.
- For RX 7000 cards on the specified Windows 11 setup: AMD recommends enabling Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS).
- Avoid conflicting frame-generation options: AMD advises disabling Radeon Anti-Lag for FSR 3 frame-pacing smoothness and avoiding simultaneous use of FSR frame generation with AMD Fluid Motion Frames.
These are AMD recommendations, not universal requirements for every game or GPU. Consult the game’s own instructions and AMD’s current guidance for the relevant hardware and software combination.

How to interpret the published code and version numbers
AMD’s original source announcement dates to December 14, 2023. The GPUOpen FSR 3 page lists FSR 3.1.5, while AMD’s FidelityFX SDK repository lists separate frame-generation components, including version 3.1.6 and a 3.1.7 swapchain sample. Those are repository listings, not a single version number for every FSR component; version labels can change as AMD updates its repositories.
