ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR means Chrome received data it could not understand during a secure connection; it does not identify a single cause. Check whether the problem affects one website or several, then test the browser and network safely. The steps below help narrow down the fault without bypassing certificate warnings or weakening your security.

What causes ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR?

Google defines the Chrome error as: “The page sent data that Chrome doesn’t understand.” Google Chrome Help describes a failed exchange, not a diagnosis. Causes can include a website’s configuration, device or network settings, browser extensions, or security software that inspects HTTPS connections.

Start with the scope of the problem. A failure on one site may be site-specific; failures across multiple sites may point to the browser, device, or network. These patterns are clues rather than proof.

Use these checks to narrow down the cause

  1. Check the site and address. Make sure the URL is spelled correctly, reload the page, and note whether other websites load.
  2. Compare browsers. Try the same address in another browser. If it fails only in Chrome or Edge, focus first on that browser. If it fails in multiple browsers, continue checking the device and network.
  3. Compare trusted networks. If available, try a different trusted connection. If the same site fails in multiple browsers and on different networks, report it to the site owner. If several sites fail across browsers while you are on one device or network, investigate local settings or contact the network administrator.

A browser or network test can help locate the problem, but it cannot by itself prove which component is responsible.

How to fix the error in Chrome

  1. Confirm the connection. Check that Wi-Fi or Ethernet is working. On public Wi-Fi, complete the network’s sign-in page before retrying. Restart the modem or router only if the broader connection appears to be affected.
  2. Update and restart Chrome. Install any available browser update, then close and reopen Chrome before testing the site again.
  3. Test in Incognito. Open the affected address in an Incognito window. If it loads there, an extension may be involved. Disable extensions, then turn them back on one at a time while testing to identify the one causing the problem.
  4. Check your device’s date and time. If you also see a certificate or date warning, make sure the computer’s date, time, and time zone are accurate.
  5. Check HTTPS inspection cautiously. Some antivirus products inspect encrypted web traffic, and managed work or school networks may use HTTPS inspection. If appropriate, use only a brief diagnostic test of the antivirus product’s HTTPS-scanning feature, then restore protection. If the result changes, consult the security vendor for its supported configuration. For a managed device or network, contact IT; Google warns that installing a certificate yourself may create a security risk.
  6. Escalate based on the pattern. If the problem remains limited to one site, contact its owner. If several sites fail across browsers, investigate the device or network, or ask the network administrator.

How to troubleshoot the error in Edge

Microsoft’s guidance covers general Edge and loading problems, not a dedicated fix for ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. These are general browser and network troubleshooting steps, so clearing data or repairing Edge is not a guaranteed cure for this particular code.

  1. Update Edge and restart the browser, then try the page again.
  2. Clear cached browsing data as a browser-isolation step. If the error persists, do not assume the cache was the cause.
  3. Test the address in another browser and, if possible, on another trusted network to see whether the failure follows Edge, the device, or the connection.
  4. Check the network. If other pages or services are also affected, verify the connection; restart the modem or router only if the wider network appears to have a problem.
  5. Repair Edge if Edge itself continues to malfunction after the simpler checks. If only one website continues to fail, report the problem to its owner.

What to do about certificate warnings

A certificate warning can indicate that a site’s certificate is invalid, expired, or self-signed. Microsoft advises against using a page with an invalid certificate for sensitive activity. Do not enter passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information on a page flagged as having an invalid certificate or insecure connection. Contact the site owner if you need to use the site.

When to contact the site owner or administrator

  • Contact the site owner when the same site fails in multiple browsers and on different networks, or when a certificate warning persists on that site.
  • Contact your network administrator when multiple websites fail across browsers on a work, school, or otherwise managed network, or when HTTPS inspection may be involved.
  • Focus on your device or network when multiple sites fail across browsers but work from another trusted network or device.

For Edge-specific general troubleshooting, see Microsoft’s guidance on what to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working. For browsing safely around certificate issues, see Microsoft’s secure browsing guidance.
