Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To improve a SEPIC’s efficiency and ripple, first consider synchronous rectification if the power level justifies its added complexity, then choose a SEPIC-rated coupled inductor and reduce losses in the coupling capacitor and control design. A SEPIC is a non-inverting buck-boost converter, so it can regulate an output above or below its input; its ideal continuous-conduction conversion ratio is VOUT/VIN = D/(1 − D). Real designs must also account for diode and parasitic drops.
1. Consider synchronous rectification when the power level warrants it
A conventional SEPIC uses an output diode. Because the diode conducts the sum of the relevant winding currents, its forward-voltage drop can create substantial heat and limit the current the converter can deliver. Replacing it with a synchronous MOSFET can reduce rectifier losses, but it adds gate-drive and timing requirements.
What synchronous rectification can improve
In a specific synchronous-SEPIC example, Texas Instruments reported efficiency greater than 95% and more than 1 A of additional output current at the same losses. These are results for that design, not performance guarantees for other SEPICs. The attainable improvement depends on operating conditions and the losses elsewhere in the converter.
What it costs in design complexity
The synchronous FET needs correctly timed drive, dead time, and protection against shoot-through. Poor timing can erase the efficiency benefit or damage the switches. For a low-power analog rail, the simpler diode rectifier may be the better trade-off; Analog Devices identifies diode rectification as appropriate for lower-power analog supplies.

2. Choose a coupled inductor designed for the SEPIC
Coupling the two SEPIC inductors can reduce their current ripple and may make the converter easier to compensate. Analog Devices AN-1366 describes a coupled-inductor arrangement that reduces inductor current ripple by a factor of two, simplifies the small-signal model, and can support higher control-loop bandwidth by removing SEPIC resonances. Treat the ripple figure as specific to the described arrangement, not a universal result for every coupled part or design.
Check the electrical and thermal ratings
Do not choose a part simply because its listing says “coupled inductor.” Check that it is suitable for the circuit’s operating range and controller. In particular, verify:

Balance footprint against sourcing and cost
A coupled component can replace two separate inductors and reduce PCB area. However, TI notes that off-the-shelf choices may be limited; a custom part can add cost and lead time. Compare the area and ripple benefit with availability, price, and the design’s current and thermal margins before committing to a layout.
3. Reduce capacitor, switching, and control-loop losses
The coupling capacitor is not just a small signal component: it carries substantial RMS current. That current creates power loss and reduces overall efficiency, so its RMS-current rating and losses deserve attention alongside its capacitance and voltage rating.

Select the coupling capacitor and account for leakage
TI recommends low-ESR ceramic capacitors to reduce coupling-capacitor losses. Also account for the coupled inductor’s leakage inductance: Analog Devices recommends keeping the coupling capacitor’s impedance below one-tenth of the combined leakage-inductance and winding-DC-resistance impedance to avoid undesirable energy transfer through the core. Apply this relationship at the relevant operating frequency when selecting components.
Set a realistic control-loop bandwidth
A SEPIC’s right-half-plane zero (RHPZ) constrains how quickly its output can be regulated. TI gives roughly one-fifth of the RHPZ frequency as a practical upper limit for regulation bandwidth. Analog Devices also advises keeping crossover below the leakage-inductance/coupling-capacitor resonance and within the practical limit imposed by switching frequency, controller, and compensation network. These constraints mean that raising bandwidth without checking the power-stage dynamics can undermine stability or transient response.

Choose switching frequency after checking losses and limits
Higher switching frequency can allow smaller inductors and capacitors, but it also increases switching loss and can restrict maximum duty cycle. Before selecting it, check MOSFET voltage and current stress, diode or synchronous-FET losses, coupling-capacitor RMS current, thermal limits, and the controller’s minimum off-time. The best frequency is a compromise among size, efficiency, operating range, and the controller’s limits—not simply the highest frequency available.

Start with the loss or performance limit that matters in the actual design. If rectifier heat is restricting load current, evaluate synchronous rectification. If ripple, model complexity, or board area is the main concern, assess a suitably rated coupled inductor. If losses or regulation behavior remain problematic, review coupling-capacitor ESR and RMS current, leakage-related behavior, switching frequency, and compensation together. Compare candidate designs using full-load efficiency, output-current and thermal margin, input and output ripple, transient response, component stress margin, PCB area, BOM cost, controller complexity, and coupled-inductor availability.

TI described SEPIC as a cost-effective alternative to a buck-boost converter for applications up to 25 W in a March 2023 brief; that figure is the scope of that brief, not a universal SEPIC power limit. The main switch is low-side driven, and energy transfers to the output while the switch is off, so component ratings and control limits still need to be checked for the particular input and output range.
