AMD uses two routes to sell its products: managed relationships for large, complex customers and an authorized partner channel for broader market reach. Its AMD Partner Network (APN) formalizes support for resellers and other partners, while distributors, value-added resellers (VARs), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and add-in board (AIB) makers each play different roles in getting CPUs, GPUs, and other products to buyers.

What AMD’s two tiers do

AMD’s strategic tier serves large OEMs, hyperscale data centers, and selected system integrators through direct sales or closely managed relationships. Its channel tier extends reach through authorized distributors, VARs, retailers, AIB manufacturers, and solution providers. The two routes are complementary: strategic accounts handle demanding deployments, while channel partners provide distribution, local reach, and sales to mid-market and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). AMD describes both a direct sales force and independent distributors in its 2024 Form 10-K.

Factor Strategic relationships Authorized channel
Typical customer or reach Multinational and selected regional OEM accounts, hyperscale data centers, and selected global and local system integrators (AMD 2024 Form 10-K). Mid-market and SMB buyers, plus customers served by distributors, OEMs, ODMs, system integrators, retailers, and sub-distributors (AMD 2024 Form 10-K).
Transaction complexity Suited to large deployments involving platform validation, supply planning, custom designs, software integration, or deployment support (AMD 2024 Form 10-K). Supports broader resale and product availability; AMD does not specify a single complexity threshold for channel transactions (AMD 2024 Form 10-K).
Inventory and product flow Hyperscalers may buy directly or indirectly through OEM, ODM, and custom-hardware arrangements; inventory ownership varies by arrangement (AMD 2024 Form 10-K). Authorized distributors typically carry inventory and resell to sub-distributors, OEMs, ODMs, and other customers. AIB manufacturers turn component-level graphics and chipset products into board-level products (AMD 2024 Form 10-K).
Configuration and services Global system integrators can pair OEM systems with their own software and services for enterprise, high-performance computing, and cloud-service-provider customers (AMD 2024 Form 10-K). VARs resell OEM systems into mid-market and SMB segments; AIB products reach system integrators, retailers, and sub-distributors (AMD 2024 Form 10-K).
Geographic reach and speed AMD identifies multinational and selected regional accounts, but does not publish a comparative delivery-time measure for this route (AMD 2024 Form 10-K). Distributors and regional partners extend availability; the directory is updated quarterly and may not reflect current status, so availability and geography need checking (AMD authorized-distributor directory).
Reporting and leakage exposure AMD does not publish a comparable public reporting cadence or gray-market exposure measure for strategic accounts (AMD 2024 Form 10-K). APN requirements include point-of-sale reporting; AMD says gray-market diversion can create counterfeit or mishandled-product risks, shadow inventory, weaker forecasting, and margin pressure (AMD 2024 Form 10-K; APN Program Guide).

How CPUs and GPUs move through the channel

Distributors and sub-distributors

Authorized distributors are an inventory-carrying layer between AMD and a range of downstream buyers. They resell to sub-distributors, OEMs, original design manufacturers (ODMs), and other customers. That structure helps products reach buyers that do not purchase through a direct strategic relationship.

OEMs and VARs

OEMs build AMD processors and graphics products into complete systems. AMD says it is increasingly focused on VARs that resell OEM systems to mid-market and SMB customers. For enterprise, high-performance-computing, and cloud-service-provider customers, global system integrators may add software and services to OEM systems.

AIB manufacturers

AIB manufacturers receive component-level graphics and chipset products and build board-level products from them. Those boards are sold onward to system integrators, retailers, and sub-distributors. This is one reason a GPU’s route to market can involve more than a direct sale from AMD to the final buyer.

What the AMD Partner Network adds

AMD’s October 8, 2025 announcement describes APN as a consolidated partner operating system: sales training, go-to-market resources, incentives, and operational information are brought into one repository. AMD lists Arena sales training, Meet the Experts webinars, newsletters, and a seller toolkit as program resources. The announcement says every member receives foundational support, while Silver, Gold, and Platinum members receive enhanced benefits, co-marketing opportunities, and access to strategic initiatives.

APN membership tiers

Tier What AMD’s public materials establish
Registered One of the four named APN tiers. The program guide associates tiers with annual thresholds, NDA/AIPA and point-of-sale reporting requirements, and training capabilities; it does not establish the current 2026 threshold amounts here (AMD APN Program Guide).
Silver Receives the enhanced benefits, co-marketing opportunities, and strategic-initiative access described for Silver, Gold, and Platinum members (AMD, October 8, 2025 APN announcement).
Gold Receives the enhanced benefits, co-marketing opportunities, and strategic-initiative access described for Silver, Gold, and Platinum members (AMD, October 8, 2025 APN announcement).
Platinum Receives the enhanced benefits, co-marketing opportunities, and strategic-initiative access described for Silver, Gold, and Platinum members (AMD, October 8, 2025 APN announcement).

The program guide describes tier-related thresholds and obligations, but the available details do not establish a reliable tier-by-tier comparison of exact thresholds, reporting cadence, certification requirements, or benefit levels. The guide said 2026 business-unit thresholds would be communicated in Q4 2025; prospective partners should confirm current criteria and program availability with AMD rather than rely on an older threshold.

How a reseller can pursue partner status

  1. Review AMD’s current APN program page and determine which business unit and partner activities fit your business.
  2. Confirm current eligibility, annual thresholds, NDA/AIPA obligations, point-of-sale reporting requirements, and training or certification expectations directly with AMD.
  3. Apply through the current APN process and complete the applicable requirements. AMD’s program materials name the tiers and resources, but the thresholds and incentives can change, so rely on current program terms.

Finding an authorized AMD distributor

AMD maintains a public authorized-distributor directory listing regional partners for desktop and server CPUs, data-center and consumer graphics, professional graphics, embedded processors, cooling, and memory. Check the directory for the relevant geography and product category before buying or placing an order. AMD cautions that the directory is updated quarterly and may not reflect a distributor’s current status.

Why channel control matters

AMD identifies gray-market diversion as a risk to the channel. Products moved outside authorized routes may be counterfeit or mishandled, and diverted stock can create shadow inventory that makes demand and supply harder to forecast. AMD also notes potential margin pressure. For buyers, a listing outside an authorized route makes it more difficult to establish product provenance and support eligibility; the distributor directory is a useful starting point, though its quarterly update means it is not a real-time guarantee.

What AMD’s 2025 channel figures indicate

In its 2025 APN announcement, AMD reported a 40% year-on-year increase in channel investment and 520 partners engaged across its client, cloud, and server portfolios. These are AMD-reported figures for 2025; they indicate investment and partner engagement, not a disclosed count of authorized distributors or a guarantee that a particular region or product is available through a given partner.
