Yes, for everyday photos and videos when convenience, on-device editing, and quick sharing matter most—but not as a universal replacement. A foldable phone is less likely to meet your needs if you depend on long optical zoom, interchangeable lenses, larger sensor formats, or a particular RAW workflow. Compare the exact phone and camera system against the subjects, distances, lighting, and output you actually shoot.

What a foldable phone can do well

A modern foldable can be the only camera many people need for casual travel, family, and social-media photos. It is already with you, processes images on the device, and its large inner display can make reviewing or editing convenient. Those practical benefits do not establish that its images outperform a dedicated camera; they make the phone easier to use and share.

Fold7: a documented example, not a stand-in for every foldable

Samsung lists the 2025 Galaxy Z Fold7 with a 200MP main camera and a 12MP autofocus ultrawide that supports macro. Its camera features include computational processing, LOG video recording, and editing tools. Samsung says the Fold7 captures shots “44% brighter and 4 times more detailed” than the Fold6. That is Samsung’s manufacturer-reported, model-to-model comparison—not an independent test or a comparison with a dedicated camera. Samsung also calls its zoom “2x optical-grade”; that wording should not be confused with a dedicated optical zoom lens. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 camera features.

Fold8 models show why the exact device matters

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, and Flip8 on July 22, 2026, positioning the Ultra around capture-to-edit workflows. That is product positioning, not an independent performance finding. Samsung’s July 22, 2026 announcement.

Independent reviews describe meaningful camera differences between the 2026 Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra. Ars Technica says the Ultra’s 10MP telephoto is small and can look overprocessed, particularly beyond 3x; it also praises main-camera video, including recording up to 8K at 30fps and strong stabilization at lower resolutions. Ars Technica’s Fold8 Ultra review.

Android Central reviewer Derrek Lee reports that, in his varied-scene testing of the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra alongside Motorola foldables, the Ultra produced more detailed, punchier images overall, with some oversaturation. He found the standard Fold8 softer and its zoom less consistent, recommending staying around 2x for its best results. Those are the reviewer’s observations, not a controlled comparison with a dedicated camera. Android Central’s Fold8 camera review.

Where the difference matters most

Distant subjects and optical reach

Zoom is a practical dividing line. A phone that relies on digital enlargement can lose image quality as you zoom in; the standard Fold8’s reviewed zoom consistency is one model-specific example. If you often photograph wildlife, sports, performances, or distant details, check whether the exact phone has a true telephoto camera and what usable optical reach it offers. A dedicated camera can use a lens chosen to reach the subject without relying on digital enlargement.

Low light, moving subjects, and the look you want

For dim scenes, fast action, or a particular lens look, evaluate actual results from the exact phone and camera-lens combination rather than relying on megapixel counts. The available reviews do not provide a controlled Fold-versus-camera test across those conditions, so they cannot establish a universal winner for low light or moving subjects.

Video and editing workflow

Check the precise device’s supported video modes, profiles, and RAW options before buying around a workflow. Samsung describes LOG recording and on-device camera editing for the Fold7. Ars Technica reports that the Fold8 Ultra supports video up to 8K at 30fps and praises its stabilization at lower resolutions. These capabilities are model-specific; they do not mean that every foldable supports the same formats or produces identical results.

What a dedicated camera system adds

A mirrorless camera is not just a body with a larger sensor: it is a system that can accept compatible lenses for different focal lengths and shooting needs. Canon explains that supported lenses communicate with compatible camera bodies about focus, zoom, aperture, stabilization, and optical correction. Dedicated systems are available in APS-C and full-frame sensor formats, which are larger than smartphone-scale sensors; sensor size alone, however, does not guarantee a better finished photograph. RAW support is also specific to the device and workflow. Nikon’s Z 7 is a full-frame interchangeable-lens mirrorless camera, and Nikon documents its NEF RAW capture options. That makes it one sourced example of a camera system with RAW formats—not a recommendation that it is a current best buy. Nikon Z 7 specifications.

These system differences create options a fixed phone camera array does not offer, but there is no established neutral statistic showing that dedicated cameras outperform foldables across the board. The sources here do not include a controlled, same-scene comparison. Ars Technica’s historical Fold7 review also noted that space constraints have affected foldable camera hardware, while describing the Fold7 as an improvement that still fell short of the flat Galaxy S25 Ultra in secondary-camera capability and multiple optical zoom levels. Choose based on what you repeatedly shoot

What matters to you Foldable phone Dedicated camera system
Convenience and quick sharing Already carried, with on-device processing and editing; features vary by model. Requires carrying a camera body and, where needed, separate lenses.
Distant subjects Check for true telephoto hardware and usable optical reach; digital zoom may reduce quality. Choose a compatible lens with the reach you need.
Lens choice and focal lengths Fixed camera array; options depend on the phone model. Compatible interchangeable lenses offer focal-length choices and lens-specific features.
Sensor formats Smartphone-scale sensors. Options include APS-C and full-frame formats; sensor size by itself does not determine the final result.
RAW workflow Verify RAW support on the exact phone and in the workflow you use. Nikon documents NEF RAW options for its Z 7; formats vary by model.
Price and total system cost Not established for a like-for-like comparison in the cited sources. Not established for a like-for-like comparison in the cited sources.

Use this decision rule: if your usual photos look good to you at the distances and in the light you encounter, and convenience matters more than lens choice, your foldable can replace a separate camera for your needs. If you repeatedly run into limits with reach, lens choice, or a required capture workflow, a dedicated interchangeable-lens camera addresses those specific needs. Compare the actual models and compatible lenses before deciding; neither category wins every situation.
