If a PC game appears stuck compiling shaders, first allow a first launch or a run after an update to proceed: there is no universal time limit that proves compilation has frozen. If progress stops and the game becomes unresponsive, work through the checks below in order. Start with a restart and updates, then verify Steam files if applicable; reset a shader cache only with instructions for the specific GPU or game.

How to tell slow shader compilation from a hang

Shader compilation prepares graphics programs a game needs to render scenes. A first launch or a launch after a game or driver update may involve new processing. The time and visible progress vary by game, driver, and platform, so a long wait alone does not establish that the game is frozen.

If the screen is still changing or the game otherwise responds, give it time to continue. If there is no visible change and the game appears unresponsive, try one restart rather than repeatedly force-closing it. If the game crashes, graphics are missing, or the whole PC locks up, treat that as a different failure mode and include those details when seeking game-specific support.

Fix shader compilation in a low-risk order

  1. Restart the game and PC

Close the game and restart the PC, then open the game client and try again. Steam includes a fresh restart in its general launch troubleshooting: Steam: Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”. If you suspect a conflict, temporarily close overlays and other nonessential software before testing.

  2. Install available game, Windows, and graphics-driver updates

Check for updates to the game and operating system. Identify your graphics adapter and driver version, then check the GPU maker’s official support source for a driver compatible with that hardware. Steam explains how to find adapter and driver details with DxDiag in its driver-updating guidance. Avoid unofficial driver packages.

  3. Verify the game files if it is installed through Steam

In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the check finish; Steam says verification may take several minutes. Its guidance also notes that some local configuration files may fail verification normally, so that result alone does not necessarily mean the installation is damaged. Do not verify multiple games at once or run the check during another system-intensive task. See Steam’s file verification instructions.

  4. Reset a shader cache only with the right instructions

Shader caches can avoid regenerating frequently used shaders, but the cache may belong to the game, launcher, or graphics driver. Do not delete an arbitrary folder or assume one vendor’s instructions apply to another GPU. NVIDIA documents how to delete its shader-cache files, which can be recreated the next time an application launches: NVIDIA: Deleting NVIDIA Shader Cache files. Capcom also identifies a damaged driver-generated cache as one possible graphics issue and directs users to their GPU manufacturer’s instructions: Capcom: Troubleshooting for Steam games.

  5. Compare the PC with the game’s requirements

Check the specific title’s system requirements against your GPU and the rest of the PC. Integrated graphics may be a limitation in some games; Steam suggests trying lower shader detail and windowed mode on some systems using integrated graphics. Its game performance troubleshooting offers further context. A hardware limitation and a compilation hang can look similar, so use the game’s requirements and symptoms rather than assuming one cause.

Why a shader cache reset is not a universal fix

A cache is stored and managed differently depending on its owner. AMD says its Shader Cache stores frequently used game shaders to reduce regeneration, and the setting is AMD optimized by default; see AMD’s Radeon settings guidance. Intel’s Precompiled Shaders feature can download pre-optimized shader files for supported Steam games, but availability depends on driver version and updates: Intel Precompiled Shaders.

These features are not interchangeable. A persistent rebuild on every launch is a reason to check the game’s support guidance and whether the relevant cache is retained, but it does not by itself identify the cause. Follow instructions for the exact GPU, driver feature, or game rather than using a generic cache path.

When to contact the game’s support team

If the problem remains after the applicable checks, consult the publisher’s current support guidance. Include the game version, GPU model, driver version, Windows version, and the exact point where the process stalls. Also say whether this began on the first launch, after a game or driver update, or happens on every launch; that context helps distinguish a title-specific issue from a general PC problem.
